Hi Andrew,

I'm not sure. I might pop in and speak to Dan at Paddy's and see what the
goss is.

That Fairydown retailer in Christchurch will probably be stocking Macpac
then in the future. I presume at some point they'll cross the channel and
make it to Oz as well. Just what I need, another retailer trying to reinvent
the wheel. Another cashed up private equity group who reckon there's lots of
money in "camping"! Makes you wonder about the quality of all the market
research these big firms do - like all the research they did on the subprime
morgage market!

Cheers,
Mike

Yes. Andrew King's been a friend of mine for years and I've always thought
his packs were some of the best in the world. We did stock them for a while
but "we just drifted a part"! So when Cargills closed down we picked up the
agency for WA. They're still made in Australia, they're still made in 8oz
canvas, so very unique.

I'm not sure how long Macpac stocks will last in store like Paddys but all
will be revealed in the "fullness of time'!

Thanks for sharing this Mike. Most interesting. Do you know if there will be
a Macpac retailer in Perth? I assume this will also impact on my friends at
Mainpeak and of course Paddy Pallin as well.

I did see a Fairydown retailer in NZ, Christchurch I think, but I didn't
visit so don't know what the setup is like.

Hi Andrew,

Just a bit of information for the group. Macpac has now been bought by a
company called "Mouton Noir" (Black Sheep in French), who also own the
"Fairydown" brand. The company is owned by Jan Cameron who just recently
sold "Kathmandu" for several hundred million dollars. If you remember a
previous email where we discussed the prospects of Fairydown making a come
back, this seems to be it. It sounds like they will start shops that sell
Macpac and Fairydown exclusively. Macpac retailers have been told that they
will only honour orders until the end of Feb and then there won't be anymore
Macpac available. I was in Anaconda last week doing some spying and saw all
the Macpac had been taken off the shelves - so something's going on.

Hi Rosemary

First and foremost if you choose to purchase a EPIRB you should only buy a
406 MHz unit as the older units such as the one I have will cease to work
from next year. Details on the 406 MHz spectrum can be found at
http://beacons.amsa.gov.au/

There are now 406 MHz beacons on the market suitable for bushwalkers. One
such model is the GME MT410 which weighs around 235 grams. You can find
further details on it at
http://www.gme.net.au/epirb/mt410_specifications.php. I suspect KTI now have
a 406 model available, but I don't have the details to hand.

I noted also your comments on being a nurse which is great. However, if an
emergency evacuation is required (e.g., broken limbs, snake bite etc), and
whilst you may have the training to provide immediate assistance, getting
further and often critical help may take a considerable amount of time, if
walking out is required. That btw assumes you can leave the injured party.
The 406 MHz EPIRB allows for the calling for assistance to you or the party,
irrespective of your location. Oh, and don't rely on mobile phones. They
are not a replacement for a EPIRB or first aid experience or a map and
compass.

Also carrying proper maps and a decent compass (not a GPSr) and knowing how
to use them and escape options are also as important as the EPIRB. I still
recall a story where I was leading a track walk and was told we didn't need
maps because we where walking on a track. Guess who got very ill that night
and need a medical evacuation in the morning? That same person. Guess what
we need to work out the best egress point? A map!

Regards
Andrew

Just back from our annual holidays and just catching up on the gossip.

What type of epirbs do people have? Is there a hiking weight one. I always
imagined them to be quite big and clunky.

I am going away soonish with some girls and maybe it might be worth us
taking one, just to keep the men folk happy if nothing else. Mind you most
are nurses and or scouting types.

But I am now starting to look at some nation trail paths in England for our
next holiday. I think that would be a devine holiday. Walking each day - pub
for lunch soft bed at night and throw ito the mix a few nights on a moor ( I
hope that is the correct spelling, not too sure that I want to sleep a night
on Moorish person, hubby might complain).

Hi Rosemary, I'm sure you'll get up to date advice on Epirbs from
members. I took one on a lone walk on the Larapinta trail in central
Australia several years ago & it was compact & weighed about 650 g. I
believe it is obsolete now as they have gone digital & are probably more
compact.
Re UK , a few years ago I did an alternate route (more southerly) to
the standard Coast to Coast walk from Cumberland and across Yorkshire to
the east coast. I stayed in a pub or B&B each night which was very
pleasant. I walked in late June - July and needed to pre book my
accommodation months ahead to make sure I didn't miss out. Also I needed
a good lightweight waterproof jacket & overpants as it bucketed down,
particularly in Cumberland (lake district). I gather there is a good
walk along the coast in Devon or Cornwall.
                                     All the best Eric

  Hi Guys,

It seems that I gave you the wrong website address for booking Andrew Lock
tickets for his WA Presentation on Wednesday Feb 20th @ 7pm. It's
www.andrew-lock.com (not "locke"). Apologies for any inconvenience.

In addition, we are forming a WA chapter for the Australian Himalayan
Foundation. I have been asked to be WA Director and I would like to put
together a committee to organise fund raising functions and events to
continue the Foundations fantastic work in Nepal. The AHF has taken on
several of the schools that the Hillary Trust supports in Nepal as Peter
Hillary, Ed Hillarys son, sits on the Board of AHF. Other Directors include
long time Himalayan tragics such as Gary Weare (Lonely Planet author),
Christine Gee founder of Australian Himalayan Expeditions now World
Expeditions), Simon Balderstone AM (group leader, political advisor), Mike
Dillion (film maker) and Lincoln Hall (mountaineer). If you wish to find out
more please visit their website at www.australianhimalayanfoundation.org.au.

I'm keen to hear if anyone else would like to be involved. I don't expect a
huge time commitment but it'd be great if we could be a group of around 10
and develop a local membership base of a couple of 100. There will be stand
at Andrew's presentation to take names of interested people and to answer
any questions.

Regards.
Mike Wood.

Yeh fair comment,

There so many thinks in life that carry the same issue I guess.

For example on the places I work does not carry much in the way of first aid
in the office, trying to get approved is a big issue, their answer to a
defib machine was "gee that's expensive" $2500 for a life, when you have
over 100 people over the age of 30.....

I guess we do what we can to preserve our own life and that of the people we
spend time with the most, family, friends, co workers, fellow hikers.

Hi Mark

I look at this way ... how much does my life or someone else's life weigh?

In PBW we prefer all walks to be a minimum of four people. This is because
if someone gets injured, one person can stay with them, two can walk out.
This however assumes that those other members are capable of walking out on
their own.

Andrew

Cool, fixomull I forgot, carry a that also,

I don't use an EPIRB only because of the weight, I guess if you were doing
lots of solo hiking it would be a must

I also ALLWAYS carry an EPIRB. I do this on my own walks and on group walks.

We also carry a large amount of fixomull tape - which we usually give away
to others that need it. (really good for blisters - feet, waist, shoulders
etc)

Before going to PNG to do the Kokoda track our doctor asked to see our first
aid kit that we carried. We took it in and the doctor was really good in
advising what we should and shouldn't carry especially with regard to some
medications such as for gardia.

Highly recommend getting a doctor's or expert advice such as below.

Hi all,

Recently completed my Senior First Aid course with St John and it
enlightened me as to what is important in my first aid kit and also
it was a refresher on my skills.

From the course it was obvious that the areas I hike in are relative
high risk in terms of if there is an issue, major, then the
likelihood if you are alone that you are going to be in trouble. So
for example if you get a snake bite, the best care is to remain calm,
reduce movement and compress and splint the area, so that give you
little option if alone but to either stay put and die, or compress
and make a slow pace back to where you can get help. Bandages are
important (add to list). That takes care of bites

Breaks well almost any break you need to split and immobilize, so
arms are ok, legs will be a different story, so we need bandages
again, see a common theme here?

Dehydration we are going to need water and electrolytes, which you
can get in small packets, add to list also, trick here is to lay
down, elevated head and shoulders, keep cool with wet cloths, so add
electrolytes to kit.

Bleeding (external) bandage, pads, all ok so long as not major or
shock doesn't set in.

Anaphylaxis, if you know you are allergic then make sure you have
your epiPen or other meds, so for me this is in the kit

The above could go on for ever and this is not to be considered
medical advice, just some of my thoughts, remember DRABCD, oh if its
been a while go and do a course CPR has totally changed in the last
12 months.

List
Bandages
Electrolytes
pads or thick dressing
epiPen
Tape
padadol
Aspirin (300mg) good for angina.
Band-Aids for blisters
Tweezers for ticks and splinters

Remember that anything you can do is better than nothing

Cheers

Morning Everyone,
I thought that you might like to know that Andrew Locke will be doing a
presentation in Perth on Wednesday February 20th 7pm at UWA's Social
Science Theatre on his recent success on Annapurna, one of the 14 8,000
metre peaks in the Himalaya.

Andrew and I were on Everest together in 1993 for the 40th Anniversary and I
personally voucher for the quality of his presentations. He is dynamic,
thoughtful as well as thought provoking. Andrew is on track to become the
first Australian to climb all 14 of the 8,000 metre peaks and is undoubtedly
a great ambassador for Australian climbing and adventure.

The cost is $16.50 if you book on line (www.andrew-locke.com) or $20 at the
door. Students $11.

Regards,
Mike Wood.

Yes I just received the message from the Bib track foundation as well.
It must have happened fairly recently as there is no mention of any
diversions in place.

What would you do if you where on the track when this happened and found
you could net get through?
Do Calm officers come out and check for walkers is another question too?
