Hi

FYI

An article titled "How to Read the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)

Looks like a useful article for those interested in using GPS units.

Subject:: Almost 3600 lives saved due to distress beacons claims AMSA
aushiker

Hi

Interesting press release from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority -
<http://www.amsa.gov.au/amsa/media/Jul3.htm>

Regards
Andrew Priest

Almost 3600 lives saved due to distress beacons

About 255 people are saved each year due to distress beacons, new figures
from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority show.

Since October 1989, 3574 people have been saved from emergency situations
on land and at sea by activating their distress beacon. Distress Beacons
are also called EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons).

From January to June this year, 239 people have been rescued after
activating a distress beacon the highest six monthly figure record by
AMSA since 1989.

"It shows that distress beacons are becoming a vital component of the
safety landscape and they are clearly proving their worth in emergencies,’’
AMSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Clive Davidson said.

Distress beacons transmit a radio signal that is detected by satellite and
overflying aircraft. All detections are relayed to Australian Search and
Rescue (AusSAR) in Canberra which is part of AMSA.

In a recent rescue involving a distress beacon, seven people were saved
from a sinking boat off the NSW far south coast.

The recreational fishing boat Sea Hunter set off a beacon after being
swamped by a large wave while fishing about 50 nautical miles (92.6 kms)
east of Merimbula.

Australian Search and Rescue tasked Canberra's SouthCare helicopter and an
Australian Aerial Patrol fixed-wing aircraft from Wollongong to respond.

The fishing vessel, Melissa, which had also responded to a call for
assistance from AusSAR, arrived at the sinking boat’s position just after
the aircraft. The Melissa picked up the seven people as they were preparing
to abandon ship.

There are major changes looming in the distress beacon system. Currently
there are two types of distress beacons, one transmitting on the analogue
121.5 MHZ frequency and the other on the digital 406 MHz frequency.

From 2009 only 406 MHz beacons will be detected. The decision to eliminate
121.5 MHz has been made by the international council that controls the
rescue satellite system in a bid to reduce the 97 per cent false alarm rate
from analogue beacons.

Hi

An interesting test has just been completed by the folks at

suspect good emergency items to have in one's kit. You can read the

JULIMAR BROOK MEANDER 40 km + 200 m

This medium paced weekend backpack will be a combination of on and
off-track walking through mainly Wandoo country in the beautiful Julimar
Conservation Park (Lower Chittering Valley). As the walk title suggests,
this really is a medium paced meander taking in the hopefully flowing
Julimar Brook and surrounding terrain. Walkers can expect two days of
walking of approximately 20 kms per day with at least 60% of this being
off-track. We will encounter prickly bush, rocks and you should expect
creek crossings. We will be wild camping on the Saturday night besides the
Julimar Brook, so a tent or shelter is a must. Expected finish time is
around 4:00 PM on the Sunday. Andrew rates this walk as medium.

About 1 1/2 hour drive and would expect to be back in town by 5:00 PM at

Ouch! That's $343.50 at today's exchange rate.
My enthusiasm is suitably curtailed. I'll try to look up a price for the
Beta Lite, which should be quite a bit less, and report back.

I have pondered the thought of importing some of this US/British stuff
on a small scale and on-selling it at enough to cover costs, but I fear
the West Australian market is too small. We need more gear freaks!

If you buy the ticket, I am happy to go and pick one up for you or more
realistically I could possibly arrange a US purchase and then shipment via
some pretty reliable folks if you are interested :-) BTW you coming this

Hmmmm. Very interesting indeed.
Saw one at Paddys last week. Most impressive, but not cheap. Forget the
exact amount quoted, but from memory it was over $300.
For solo walkers, the Beta Lite, which uses two trekking poles (looks
not unlike a giant, pointy bra) would be ideal for a range of Aussie
conditions.
BUT sadly, Paddys say they do not import them.
Anyone going to the US on a business trip who could pop a couple in the

Western Australia's unique wilderness areas will be given special
protection under a new State Government initiative announced today by
Environment and Heritage Minister Judy Edwards. The draft wilderness
policy, released for a two-month public comment period, will guide future
management of wilderness and surrounding areas in national parks and
protected areas.

The initiative is an integral part of the Government's Protecting Our
Old-Growth Forests policy that will create the Walpole Wilderness Area on
the State's south coast.

Dr Edwards said the draft policy proposed that a tract of land could be
considered a wilderness area where it contained wilderness:
which was substantially unchanged;
that was sufficiently large and remote to make the long-term protection
of its biodiversity and natural systems practical; and
where ecological processes remained essentially intact.

The minimum size of areas of wilderness would be 8,000ha in the southern
parts of the State and about 20,000ha in the arid, semi-arid and tropical
zones.

The draft policy uses the concept of wilderness quality developed by the
Australian Heritage Commission and outlines criteria under which wilderness
can be classified under the State's Conservation and Land Management Act.

Copies of the policy are available from the Department of Conservation and
Land Management's website, http://www.naturebase.net and from the
department's Crawley office on 9442 0300.

Submissions on the draft policy close on August 11 and should be sent to
the Department of Conservation and Land Management, Locked Bag 104, Bentley
Delivery Centre, WA 6983 and marked Attention: Aminya Ennis. Submissions
also can be emailed to aminyae@....

The draft policy is available in PDF format at

Hi

Further details on the Bibbulmun Track - Monadnocks to Gringer Creek
diversion. The following is from CALM:

At present there is no water available at the temporary campsite, there is
a rainwater tank but no water in it yet.

There is water still available at the Monadnocks and Gringer Creek
campsite, however we do still advise walkers to bring some of there own water.

There are several roads or access points along the new diversion, they
include;

* Intersection of Millars Log Rd and Albany Hwy
* Sullivan rock picnic area
* Intersection of Albany Hwy and Pike Rd
* Intersection of Wearne Rd and Albany Hwy

The Temporary campsite is approx. 13km away from Sullivan Rock

The Southern access point to Albany Hwy is:

* Intersection of Wearne Rd and Albany Hwy. 2km north of North Bannister,
which is 1km to track crossing or
* North Bannister Roadhouse, 85km south east of Perth on Albany Hwy

Cheers
Andrew

Hi

The following is from the CALM Bibbulmun Track new service. It applies to
the Monadnocks to Gringer Campsites section:

"There is no water at the new temporary campsite. Also be careful when
crossing the Albany Hwy, there is currently 'No Hiker Crossing' signs in
place along the Albany Hwy for the moment.Due to a wildfire in the
Monadnocks Conservation Park, a 24km section of the Track south from
Sullivan Rock (section 10) through to Cowcher Rd (section 13) north of the
Gringer Creek campsite has been closed. The wildfire burnt out two
campsites - Mt Cooke and Nerang. This section is likely to remain closed
for the winter period.Walkers can divert down the temporary diversion from
Sullivan rock to Cowcher Rd. This temporary alignment is between the
Monadnocks campsite and the Gringer Creek campsite, which is approximately
40km (which is 2km shorter then the original alignment).

The new alignment: For South Bound Walkers - around 100m after the boot
cleaning station (7km from the Monadnocks! campsite), turn right and walk
for 600m over Sullivan Rock. Carefully cross Albany Hwy to Sullivan Rock
picnic area. From here, follow the golden Bibbulmun Track markers along the
new alignment for around 13km until you reach the temporary campsite.
Continue along the track (approx. 9km), then cross back over Albany Hwy at
the junction of Albany Hwy and Pike Rd. Walk along Pike road for approx.
2.5km, then turn right and follow the track for a further 6km to where you
reach the original alignment.North Bound Walkers - once on Cowcher Rd
(10.3km from Gringer Creek campsite), continue along Cowcher Rd for 1km and
then turn right. Follow the golden Bibbulmun Track markers along the new
alignment for 6km until you reach Pike Rd. Turn left and walk for approx.
2.5km along Pike Rd. Carefully cross over Albany Hwy and follow trail for
9km until you reach the temporary campsite. From here walk a further 13km
until you reach the Sullivan Rock picnic area. Cross Albany Hwy and follow
the trail for 600m over Sullivan Rock, then turn on to original Track. One
temporary campsite with toilet, table and tent sites are available."

I have emailed CALM for the latest information on water availability or
nearest road access for water drops. Pending their reply, does anyone have
any additional information on this campsite? Location? Water availability?

Regards
Andrew
