Has anyone got a One Planet bag, pref down fill.

What do you think of it?

I am doing some research for a friend for a new bag before I lose mine to her.
She is cold sleeper with limited money. Are OP expensive? I like the idea that
they are made in aus. And I won't let her buy an inferior bag again. Or look at
me with daggers cause I am warm and toasty at night. Or listen to her teeth
chattering at 3am.

Hello All,
I have been advised by Gareth Hoare, Park Ranger, Yanchep National Park
of the following due to the fires last month:
"unfortunately the North western end of the Coastal plain walk trail
between Yanchep National Park and Haddrill rd was significantly
damaged.
These damages include loosing every trail marker and sign between the
mentioned area, the Shapcock campsite being burnt down and parts of the
trail itself have been destroyed by fire suppression
equipment e.g. loaders, bull dozers and fire trucks. We hope to have
the trails up and running as soon as possible, but realistically it
with be quite some time before we are able to reopen any of the closed
trails as we are still very busy with the fire season."

So be aware that Shapcott campsite no longer exists.

Best
Ralph

G'day

I spent the last four days with Ralph and a few others from the Perth
Bushwalkers Club exploring around the Thompson Cove area of the Nuyts
Wilderness, Walpole. For those interested I have written up a few notes on
the walking, added links to the photo gallery from the weekend and upload
walk routes (you can download/view in Google Earth etc) at
http://www.aushiker.com/2009/02/nuyts-wilderness-walk-track-walpole-western-aust\

Thanks to Ralph for an enjoyable weekend.

I am leading a walk to the Nuyts Wilderness near Walpole and it will be
under the auspices of the Perth Bushwalkers. Non members will have to pay
$5.

The details:

Sat 7th Feb - Tues 10th Feb Nuyts Wilderness Walk Distance 15km
return + 205 m

A teaser to get back into the backpacking spirit after a festive break and
to shake the summer heat and cobwebs. The terrain is easy but sandy.

We will leave from my place in Manning at 7.30 am for the 6 hr drive to
Walpole and then out to Deep River. Saturday night will be at the Mt. Clare
campsite on the Bibbulmun Track which is only a short 1.5 km trip. Sunday we
will walk to Thompson Cove campsite some 7.5 km away which is in a
wilderness area with no facilities but fresh water is available from the
stream. Swimming will be on the agenda in either Thompson Cove and/or
Aldridge Cove.

Monday we will explore Mt. Hopkins which sits at 205 m some 1.5 k's away
from the campsite. Return home on the Tuesday.

Due to the limited camping space at Thompson Cove, numbers will be limited,
so it is a first come basis. You will need either a tent/tarp/hammock/bivy.

Please contact me for further details.

Cheers

Ralph

That's 11 articles. Add in copious advertising to pay for the cost of
printing.
Hum ... about 1-2 pages per article? Very comprehensive.

For me, yes as there are good tips on what to look out for.

It depends on what you are seeking from the magazine.

There are articles on how to improve your skills for photography, safety,
climbing, weather, navigation, family camping, mountain bike set up, 4WD,
adventure eating, Orienteering and light camping.

I am enjoying the read.

Found one glaring error. The stated weight of an empty Sigg 1 litre water
bottle is 1.5 kg. Mine only weighs 134 g. Maybe the newer ones are 150 g.

Has a section on Mountain bikes with Full-Suspension. They are Giant, Ibis,
Orange and Mongoose. Then there are Hardtails. It would be right up your
alley.

I guess the magazine is now in the newsagents and cost $9-95

Cheers

Hello All,

I have just received a complimentary copy of the Adventure Gear Guide Summer
2009 Magazine.

The founders of the magazine, Lucas Trihey and Carl Roe have put it under
new management but will remain as Consultant Editors and writers.

The Gear Guide will become Bi-annual with both Summer and Winter editions
and the Adventure Journal will become a quarterly publication.

Annual subscription is $50 (well $49-95) and there will also be available a
DVD of the publications for around the $30 mark.

The web site is under construction but there are links so check it out at:

   Hi Everyone,

I was advised by Peregrine Adventures HO in Melbourne last week that their
February 17th 2009 departure to Antarctica, the Falklands and South Georgia
Islands has had a group cancellation. So consequently a small number of
places have come available, this is really unusual as these trips are often
   full a year in advance.

As some of you may remember I bought the Peregrine franchise in WA from
Peter Lambert (who is retiring) last October and during my recent meetings
with the HO in Melbourne they made an offer in conjunction with Aerolineas
Argentinas which effectively reduces the cost by about $5,000. Normally
this combination would be valued at $21,000 plus, Peregrine are offering it
   from $16,248, that's a substantial discount on a fantastic, once in a
lifetime trip. This includes return economy class airfares, 3 nights in
Buenos Aires, 1 night in Ushuaia and all normal voyage costs over 18 nights.

I did a trip to Antarctica in 2000 and often tell people that it was the
best trip I've ever done, particularly with the sea kayaking component. This
trip will also take in South Georgia, one of the most isolated places in the
world and home to masses of wildlife, and the Falkland Islands. Combined
with the Antarctic Peninsula this will be a wildlife extravaganza, whales,
penguins, seals, sea birds all at the end of their nesting or breeding
   cycles.

If there is enough local interest in this departure then I will accompany
the group as well. If you'd like more information please contact either
myself, Jos, Anna or Peter at Peregrine (9321 1259) or reply to this email.
Looking forward to seeing on my next adventure.

   Cheers,
   Mike Wood.

Hi Guys,

I just spoke to Sean from Sea To Summit (Jet Boil importers) in regards to
the Jetboil recall. It doesn't effect the bought stock in Australia, the
effective stock never arrived in Oz, so no need for worry if you bought your
stove from an Australian supplier. If you bought it over the net then you'll
need to investigate further.

Cheers,
Mike Wood.

I take it that you are not in front of young people trying to "learn" them?

My mate is a Principal of a Primary School and just loves to veg out with me
away from the worries and pressure of his job.

You could try my mate in Tassie who has done parts of the Overland Track.

If you would like I can contact him to see if he is interested and put you
two in touch. He needs to get out and do gear testing.

Cheers

Ralph

Oh well, Ralph, not to worry. Maybe later as you say. I am hoping to
be in Antarctica in 12 months time working for a year so we will see.

I will try to hassle someone into submission before I go if I go:)

I did chuckle at the teacher reference. There are lots of other roles
in education you know!:)

Hello Rosemary,

I am committed to the Easter Break with the Perth Bushies at their annual
camp at Greens Island and every July holidays I spend a week with another of
your kind, a chalkie camping out on the Coastal Plain Trail as he loves to
escape.

I have only walked around Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake last year and it was
snowing (October). It was beautiful but cold.

You would appear to be confined to the school holiday periods whereas I am
mainly non school holidays apart from my annual July camp.

Maybe our plans will merge in the future. Sadly, 2009 appears to be out of
the question for me.

If you are a member of a walking club you could advertise in their magazine
for a walking companion. Even the Bibbulmin Foundation publishes a section
for people looking for walking partners.

Cheers

Ralph

Ralph,

I work in the education system so I am more or less bound to the
holidays. I was looking at easter holidays (10th to 28th April) as a
possiblity. Have you walked that part of the world in winter? Is it
still a great walk? If so I can go July holidays as well.

Cheers

Rosemary

I can vouch for this system. We made a container using the plumbers
pipe as a time capsule in the year 2000 with scouts. It was found a
month ago and the contents (papers and cloth badges) were as good as
the day they went in. No discolourisation or insect infestation. It
was buried about 3 foot down in sand, so not sure if this will impact
on it ability to survive differently. But 8 years is saying something
for the system. Only thing we did differently was to glue both ends.

Have fun on the walk. I was planning the Overland this school
holidays but my friend is pregnant so I told her she is not to go
anywhere where there is no medical help close by. Next year:( Any
takers?

Thanks to Roger Caffin for this alert.

Jetboil have had a QC problem with some PCS and GCS stoves and are
recalling some of them as the improperly machined canister connection
can leak gas at times. See
http://www.jetboil. <http://www.jetboil.com/valve_recall> com/valve_recall
to see if your stove has this danger.

Hey Alan,

Are you back in the west?

I read the article. Very interesting with a bit of drama, one was
dangerously dehydrated and had to be taken to Tom Price for a shot of
Stemetil and a sleep over in a very dark motel room.

For those who are interested - the most recent edition of WILD has an
article featuring canyoning in Karijini NP, a trip undertaken by the author
and her group in October.

Yes, you can strap it on the outside of a pack.

Some people use this container for a geocache container to hide out in the
bush.

Let me know how it went.

Cheers

Excellent
Thanks Ralph, I will construct it and let you know how it goes.
It strikes me that it would also easily strap to the side of my pack,
thus solving the space issue.

Ok,

I don't think we can get bear containers here but you can make something
very similar.

Get a length of PVC tube that has a thread on one end, say about 400 mm long
and a diameter of between 110- 120 mm. Not too sure of the exact profile but
it is between the two. It is a standard size but it escapes me at the
moment.

Glue a cap on the non thread end with PVC glue. Screw a cap on the other
end. It is standard for the above tube. It will be heavier than a 4 litre
ice cream container but very sturdy. Wouldn't hurt to use a bit of plumbers
tape on the threads to make it waterproof as Tassie is very wet.

Best of luck.

Ralph

Well I've got to feed 6 people at the end of a 7 day walk - so
basically as as big as is feasible for carrying 3 hrs from the drop
off point.
I had thought of a 4L icecream container sealed with duct tape - but
an additional complication is the presence of Tassie Devils on the
ground.

I'm going to Tasmania in February (the Western Arthurs). The first camp in
is also the last
camp out so I'm keen to drop the last nights food there rather than haul it
over the ridge.
Does anyone have any useful tips on light, possum proof food drop containers
that will last
for 8 nights?
