Members,

If you feel strongly about this wilderness area I ask that you sign this
petition.

Bells Rapids is on the Avon River. I know as I went down it backwards in a
canoe doing the Avon Descent many years ago. Not very clever.

Welcome Clare,

I am sure that someone will post here to let you know when they are going

out.

I’m leading a walk this Sunday if you are interested on behalf of the Perth

Bushwalkers. It is the Eagle View Walk Trail in the John Forrest National

Park.

The details:

Sun May 3rd. Eagle View Walk Trail 15 km + 200 m

Ralph Ditton 9450 2334/ 0413157870

John Forrest National Park

rdassetts@optusnet. com.au

This bushwalk circuit will lead to the parks’ less explored destinations. We

will be covering a variety of relatively pristine habitats.

This trail was developed by the Perth Bushies in conjunction with the park

rangers.

Bring morning tea and lunch.

We will meet for an 8.30am start in the car park of the Pig and Whistle, Cnr

Morrison Rd and Myles Rd. Swan View opposite the chemist shop on the other

side of the road with the blue and white sign.

There is limited parking at Taaffe Rd, so we will have to car pool depending

on numbers. It is only a short distance away.

Cost. For non-members it is $5.

Best

Hi all

Im Clare, 28, I live in Perth and would like to start doing some

bushwalking, locally and around WA. I have walked about 150km of the

Bibbulman track around 10 years ago now and I want to train up to do the

South Coast track in Tassie. If anyone is heading out anytime and wants some

company please let me know. I would say I am moderately fit at the moment

but I dont think I would hold anyone up too much! I work away so I am not

always home but it does mean i have free days during the week! Look forward

to hearing from anyone.

While true in one sense, it is manifestly misleading in another sense. It
takes experience to be able to use a topo map they way they are suggesting,
and that experience only comes from going walking without that experience
(but with the topo map in hand anyhow).

But more to the point: I wonder how our early explorers and stockmen managed
to get around the mountains without a good topo map?

And I do remember doing the Arthur Ranges in SW Tassie in the 60s off a
small(!) sketch map photocopied from a Hobart Walking Club magazine....

Ah well ... suitable for Americans novices.

** Dear All

DEC wishes to provide an update on the wildfire southwest of Balingup over
the weekend of 14 - 15 February 2009. The fire is now well contained and
being monitored by DEC's regular surveillance system, softwood industry
personnel and DEC crews working in the vicinity. Salvage harvesting of the
merchantable pine by the Forest Products Commission is occurring. This
operation may experience ignitions of fallen tree tops and needle bed from
hot material in the ground, creating fire and smoke hazards from time to
time in some areas within the fire boundary. The damage caused by the
fire has been assessed and damage to some of the facilities and the forest
at the Wrights Bridge recreation site identified. Therefore, the Wrights
Bridge recreation area will remain closed until further notice. Motorists
are asked to be aware of fire personnel and other vehicle traffic associated
with the incident. Smoke may still be emitted from the fire ground and
motorists should drive with their headlights turned on. *Road Re-opening
details:* Nannup- Balingup, Cundinup and Hawter Roads are *Open* Please
drive slowly with headlights on and please look out for fire trucks and
workers on these roads. *Road Closure details: *The following road blocks
are still in place:

    - *All internal plantation roads are closed to general traffic.*

*A bridge load limit *of 8t has been placed on the bridge on a small track
known as Crossing Road (near Wrights Bridge).

Hi Peter

Glad to hear you got some accommodation sorted. Boat Harbour is a nice spot

really beaut. Maybe an opportunity for a spot of swimming or snorkelling
too in the Harbour.

Andrew,

Thanks for the reply.

I left a phone message with the Caravan Park and The Chalet people.

Only the Chalet guy called back and a three bedroom 'Chalet' sounded good.

We were thinking about tents, but if it rains then that is a hassle and we want
to get going early, as it is

24kms to the next hut (Boat Harbour).

Unfortunately, DEC says they have not had much rain down there and they are not
sure how full the tanks are.

Hopefully we get some rain down there soon. I will call them again before we
depart.

I dont want to take huge amounts of water with me.

I will check my stuff and make a list for the Mountain Designs sale.

I probably only need some wilderness wash and maybe some flash socks would be
good.

Regards,

Peter

Hello Rosemary,

Check out Roger's FAQ if you have not done so already. He is a member of
this forum.

http://www.bushwalk ing.org.au/ FAQ/FAQ_Sleeping Bags.htm

One Planet, Mont are two Aussie companies that make sleeping bags that I am
aware of.

The latest Wild magazine No 111 has a survey on sleeping bags and One Planet
and Mont get a mention. Three bags are selected for testing from each
company.

Mont have women's version and can pay anywhere from $330 for the Zodiac 55
to Main Range at $830.

Check it out here:

http://www.mont. com.au/index/ catalog/product/ 069

One Planet has the Bungle 550 for women costing $330. It had a lower comfort
rating of -4/2 C. Add a Thermolite Reactor liner and that boost the comfort
level up to 8 C depending on your metabolism and when you last ate before
going to bed.

Check it out here:

http://www.oneplane t.com.au/ travel-series/ bungle-550

Cheers

Has anyone got a One Planet bag, pref down fill.

What do you think of it?

I am doing some research for a friend for a new bag before I lose mine to
her. She is cold sleeper with limited money. Are OP expensive? I like the
idea that they are made in aus. And I won't let her buy an inferior bag
again. Or look at me with daggers cause I am warm and toasty at night. Or
listen to her teeth chattering at 3am.

Check it out here:

http://www.mont.com.au/index/catalog/product/069

One Planet has the Bungle 550 for women costing $330. It had a lower comfort
rating of -4/2 C. Add a Thermolite Reactor liner and that boost the comfort
level up to 8 C depending on your metabolism and when you last ate before
going to bed.

Check it out here:

Has anyone got a One Planet bag, pref down fill.

What do you think of it?

I am doing some research for a friend for a new bag before I lose mine to
her. She is cold sleeper with limited money. Are OP expensive? I like the
idea that they are made in aus. And I won't let her buy an inferior bag
again. Or look at me with daggers cause I am warm and toasty at night. Or
listen to her teeth chattering at 3am.

Hello All,
I have been advised by Gareth Hoare, Park Ranger, Yanchep National Park
of the following due to the fires last month:
"unfortunately the North western end of the Coastal plain walk trail
between Yanchep National Park and Haddrill rd was significantly
damaged.
These damages include loosing every trail marker and sign between the
mentioned area, the Shapcock campsite being burnt down and parts of the
trail itself have been destroyed by fire suppression
equipment e.g. loaders, bull dozers and fire trucks. We hope to have
the trails up and running as soon as possible, but realistically it
with be quite some time before we are able to reopen any of the closed
trails as we are still very busy with the fire season."

So be aware that Shapcott campsite no longer exists.

Best
Ralph

I am leading a walk to the Nuyts Wilderness near Walpole and it will be
under the auspices of the Perth Bushwalkers. Non members will have to pay
$5.

The details:

Sat 7th Feb - Tues 10th Feb Nuyts Wilderness Walk Distance 15km
return + 205 m

A teaser to get back into the backpacking spirit after a festive break and
to shake the summer heat and cobwebs. The terrain is easy but sandy.

We will leave from my place in Manning at 7.30 am for the 6 hr drive to
Walpole and then out to Deep River. Saturday night will be at the Mt. Clare
campsite on the Bibbulmun Track which is only a short 1.5 km trip. Sunday we
will walk to Thompson Cove campsite some 7.5 km away which is in a
wilderness area with no facilities but fresh water is available from the
stream. Swimming will be on the agenda in either Thompson Cove and/or
Aldridge Cove.

Monday we will explore Mt. Hopkins which sits at 205 m some 1.5 k's away
from the campsite. Return home on the Tuesday.

Due to the limited camping space at Thompson Cove, numbers will be limited,
so it is a first come basis. You will need either a tent/tarp/hammock/bivy.

Please contact me for further details.

Cheers

Ralph

That's 11 articles. Add in copious advertising to pay for the cost of
printing.
Hum ... about 1-2 pages per article? Very comprehensive.

For me, yes as there are good tips on what to look out for.

It depends on what you are seeking from the magazine.

There are articles on how to improve your skills for photography, safety,
climbing, weather, navigation, family camping, mountain bike set up, 4WD,
adventure eating, Orienteering and light camping.

I am enjoying the read.

Found one glaring error. The stated weight of an empty Sigg 1 litre water
bottle is 1.5 kg. Mine only weighs 134 g. Maybe the newer ones are 150 g.

Has a section on Mountain bikes with Full-Suspension. They are Giant, Ibis,
Orange and Mongoose. Then there are Hardtails. It would be right up your
alley.

I guess the magazine is now in the newsagents and cost $9-95

Cheers

Ralph
