Hi

From the website blurb:

Another Great Long Distance Walking Track is under development in the
tropics in Northern Australia. We hope to develop a walking trail network
of some 2,000 kilometres (about 1,250 miles), which will pass along the
Eastern Cape York Peninsula. This is one of the last pristine tropical
regions in the world. It is wild, beautiful and presently largely trackless
and inaccessible. The coast has many stunning tropical beaches lapped by
the azure blue Coral Sea, with the Great Barrier Reef running the closest
it gets to the Queensland Coastline.

The Dreaming Trails derive their name from the ancient culture of the
Aboriginal people who have inhabited the area for some 40,000 to 50,000
years. Theirs is the oldest living culture in the world and many still live
on Cape York. Their knowledge and spiritual appreciation of the region is
unsurpassed.

The sea teams with life, the land is rich in birdlife and other animals,
while the rivers are nesting and breeding grounds for crocodiles.

In designing the trails, the Queensland Government Parks and Wildlife
Service is seeking the views of people who love wilderness and walking, so
we can develop a network of trails and infrastructure that best suit their
needs and wishes.

By completing the survey you can help us design a world class long distance
trail network. We hope that it will be a network that suits you as a walker,
hiker, rambler, tramper (depending on where you come from) and will provide
memorable, meaningful (perhaps even life-changing) experiences for those who
walk it.

We ask between 2 and 5 minutes of your time to complete the survey. They
are largely multiple choice and need no research to complete. No personal
identifying information is asked for.

details and a link to the survey can be found at

Andrew

Hi Mark, I can't help with Kilimanjaro, I did a trek (pack donkey assisted) with
a company in the Ngorongoro conservation area & climbed Mt Lengai at the end but
that is a relatively short climb compared to Mt Kilimanjaro. Best to do Kili
sooner rather than later as the snow ice cap on top is melting away. I also
went the Okavango delta whilst in Africa & would defintely recommend a visit.
                                                               regards Eric

Hi,

Has anyone climbed either of the above two?

I am looking for some information as to what group you climbed with, your
experiences both good and bad and any suggestions you might have for someone
looking to climb either.

Thanks

Er - Kosciusko, NSW?
Many times! I regret to say that it might be the easiest of the lot.
Of course, you could do it in winter ... much more fun! (Skis or snowshoes.)
Group??? Sue and me.

Thanks for the details in your article Mark, I too live in Perth & have
done the Bib track (in stages) plus other treks both in Oz & overseas.
I've always been a hiker who has taken minimal gear & am working towards
the the U/L approach & will gradually replace older heavier gear as I
will have more time for hiking from the start of 2010.
With this in mind your article is a very useful resource.
Keep up the good work !
                                          Regards Eric

Thanks Paul,

Definitely worth giving it a go, I wont look at another bag so long as I am
still standing.

The weight advantage is excellent, the comfort factor and versatility are
something that you just cannot go past.

A cheaper option would be to try converting an old bag you may have around the
place, just remove the zipper ( I hate zippers are they feel rough on the skin),
sew up a foot box and away you go.

Cheers

Hi all,

My BackpackingLight article will be published shortly,

Sneak Peak;

Transitional Hiker: Australian Mark McLauchlin chronicles his ongoing
transformation from former hiker to getting-back-into-it-hiker to
ouch-that-hurts-hiker to lightweight hiker. On the way, he becomes a devotee
of other famous UL walkers, buys a sewing machine (successfully enduring the
teasing of his loving wife), and plugs into the most devoted UL community on
the planet in the BPL forums.

  Hi Guys,

Some of you may remember Andrew Lock speaking here in Perth last year; in
case you don't know Andrew summitted Shishmapangma on October 2nd making him
the first Australian, and only one of 13 people in the world, to have
climbed all 14 eight thousand metre mountains in the world. This is a huge
achievement and one that is well deserved. The whole outdoors and adventure
community sends him their congratulations.

If you want more information check out Andrew's website www.andrew-lock.com.

Also, on the weekend, we held the Mountain Designs Great Southern Race at
Denmark. It was a great success with 39 teams completing the gruelling
course set by John Jacoby and Sam Maffett of Rapid Ascent fame. 14 stages
comprising ocean paddling, inlet paddling, mountain biking, running, a
flying fox and abseil plus constant navigating by compass and map. 4 members
in a team with 3 members on the course at any one time. Check out the
gallery on www.thewest.com.au, go to galleries and click on Great Southern.
Well done to all, and thanks to the support crews, the volunteers and the
people of Denmark.

Cheers,
Mike Wood.

Hi Guys,

Please see below an invitation to 2 Polar Information Evenings to be held at
the Mountain Designs Adventure & Travel Centre in Hay St Perth. Kirtsen Le
Mar was one of the Expedition Leaders on the trip I did to Antarctica this
year and I have encouraged her to come to Perth to speak about our programs
there. Kirsten is a great speaker with heaps of funny anecdotes and stories
about her 10 years in Polar regions. Kirsten does particularly good
imitations of King Penguins, Whales and Elephant Seals once she has warmed
up! Her stories about the months she spent studying Elephant Seals while
living in a hut the size of a shoe box are very entertaining. I hope to see
you there.

Next week we have *2 Polar Information Evenings!*

I am not familiar with this brand Rosemary.

I’m just back from a Cape to Cape walk and am nursing two beaut blisters.
One on each heel.

Saw other walkers going the opposite direction and a group of 4 went our
direction. We caught up with them at camp. Well, they caught up with us as
they left camp later than us.

Very pretty but very hard with lots of soft sand.

Has anyone had experience with this brand? A friend bought at dwellingup
camping store, a packet of risotto. This was really very nice. Just
wondering if anyone knows of it in Perth and any thoughts on it? It was
pricey but it did her for 2 meals and I take my hat off to her, I couldn't
eat that much food even in 2 sittings.

Anyway had a quite few days walking from Driver rd, Lane Poole to Collie.
Got horribly lost getting to Driver Rd in a car but made it to the hut
before dark.

Isn't it funny that you walk and not see another soul for 4 days? We seemed
to just miss a group who was a day ahead of us. And no one walking south to
north during our time on the track.

years to carry freeze dried food and gas canisters. Maybe they're just starting
to get it now.

I recently purchased the book "Bush
<http://www.dec.wa.gov.au/shop/bush-books/bush-tucker-plants-of-the-south-we
st/shop.dec.html> Tucker Plants of the South-West", very interesting read
and something I will take out with me on my next few trips to see if I am
able to identify some of the edible plants. I purchased the book from the
Bibbulumn Track Foundation office in Perth, it is published by Naturebase
<http://www.naturebase.net/> . Track members get the book for about $5.80,
non-members pay $6.50. Here is an extact-
The Nyoongar people of south-western Australia had a very ordered way of
life. Their hunting and gathering patterns were guided by six weather-based
seasons. The Nyoongars' resource-based observations enabled them to make the
best use of available plant and animal resources at these times. This book
provides an insight into some of the common bush tucker plants used by the
Nyoongar people.

For the budding ultralighters here is a link that I became aware of.

The owner is away until December on a long backpack.
