The Department of Conservation and Land Management will begin burning out
unburnt pockets as part of the strategy to contain a fire that has burned
through 200 hectares in the John Forrest National Park on the eastern edge
of the metropolitan area.

The burning will be along Peachy Road in Swan View. The aim of the burning
is to create a wide, low fuel buffer between private property and the fire
edge. This will assist in minimising the risk from flare ups that might
occur in the face of easterly winds tomorrow morning.

The Department also will be lighting up unburnt pockets within the main
fire perimeter. The burning out is part of the strategy minimise the risk
of re-ignition of the fire tomorrow.

Department crews from Mundaring and Jarrahdale are being assisted by local
volunteer bush fire brigades and the Fire and Emergency Services Authority.
More than 60 personnel are involved.

The fire began just after midday in a steep and inaccessible section of the
park north of the Jane Brook and east of Rocky Pool.

Waterbombers and helitaks have been used throughout the day to assist in
containing the fire. Thick smoke from the headfire earlier this afternoon
limited the aerial operations but the bombers were deployed to the northern
side of the fire where a bulldozer was used to work along the flank and
pinch off the front.

The fire now is contained within existing tracks.

CALM's Perth Hills District Duty Officer Kevin Pollock said the control
operations later this evening would mean the final fire size might be as
big as 250 hectares.

"The fire has not threatened private property but we want to ensure the
western edge that is only a few hundred metres from Peachy Road is secure,
especially as we expect gusting easterly winds early tomorrow morning," he
said.

From the Weather Bureau - see
http://www.bom.gov.au/announcements/media_releases/climate/ahead/20040115T_wa.sh\
tml
for pretty pictures and more links.

Regards
Andrew

The Bureau's seasonal temperature outlook for late summer to mid-autumn, is
neutral for WA as a result of recent temperature patterns in the Indian and
Pacific Oceans.

For the February to April period in WA, the chances of above average
seasonal daytime temperatures are a little over 60% in the far northeast of
the State, but over most areas they're between 45 and 60% (see map). So
with climate patterns like the current, about 5 seasons out of every 10 are
expected to be warmer than average across most of WA, with about 5 out of
10 being cooler.

Outlook confidence is related to the consistency of the influence of
Pacific and Indian Ocean temperatures on seasonal temperatures. During the
February to April period, history shows this influence on maximum
temperatures to be moderately consistent over parts of central and northern
WA, but over most of the State the influence is only weakly or very weakly
consistent (see background information).

Warmer than average nights are favoured over northeast WA. The probability
of above average seasonal minimum temperatures is between 60 and 70% in
this part of the State, while it is mainly between 50 and 60% elsewhere.

History shows the oceans' influence on minimum temperatures in the February
to April period to be moderate to highly consistent in northeast WA, and
generally moderately consistent over the rest of the State, particularly
the populated areas.

G'day Luke,

late last year Andrew and I walked in that area. We left the car at the
'recreation' area by the pine plantation (below Mt Cooke), picked up the Bib Tk
north of Mt Cooke and wandered into the campsite before reaching the summit.
From the top we descended back to the car.

At that time the campsite seemed pretty basic with a dunny, room for tents and a
1000l water tank. The water tank then did not catch rainwater and had to be
topped up by CALM.

Many trees were spouting new shoots and leaves but much of the groundcover was
gone - walking in some parts was dusty and sooty. The lack of a full canopy and
shade also makes walking hot. Due to the lack of vegetation many creeks have
been eroded by winter rainfall. The creek that is behind the old hut site looks
like it has had plenty of water.

The track across the summit was vague in places but some markers remain.

Unfortunately I have not taken too much notice of any facilities at Sullivan Rk.
I have always parked around the back but there is some sort of info board closer
to the Hwy - not sure what else is there.

Hope this helps

Alan

Hello

My wife and I are planning a very slow, staged
end-to-ender. We did Kalamunda to Brookton Hwy in 3
stages last year and are planning to walk from
Brookton Hwy to Dwellingup in 3 stages this year.

Regarding the section from Sullivan Rock to Mt Cooke
I'm interested if anyone has recently walked the newly
reopened track and how it looks - has there been much
regrowth since the recent fires? Is it worth walking
this year or should we leave it a few more years?

Also, can anyone advise what facilities, if any (eg
barbecues, tables, etc) are available at the Sullivan
Rock parking drop-off/pick-up point on Albany Hwy.

Thank you.

Again this will be a PBW

Hankering to get back into the bush? Well maybe this
little all on-track
overnighter may be just the thing for you. We will be
heading off late
afternoon on Saturday, February 7, 2004 for a
leisurely (but medium paced)
walk from the Hills Forrest Discovery Centre into
Helena campsite, our five
star bush camp on the Bibbulmun Track. Next morning
we will be up with the
birds (including the blue wrens who like to flirt in
and out of the
shelter) to enjoy the sunrise over the Helena Valley
and a glass or two of
champagne over a leisurely breakfast. Following
brekkie, we will wander
back to the Discovery Centre and possibly the
Mundaring Hotel for lunch. I
would expect to be back at the cars around 11:30 AM,
well before sun gets a
chance to really bite. Andrew rates this walk as
easy, but it will be at a
medium pace. Note the distance and elevation is for
the whole
weekend. Please contact Andrew to register your
interest.

[Aushiker] seeking hiking companion in Perth

Is there anyone interested in doing some long day hikes in and around
Perth over the next 6 weeks???
Would also be interested in backpacking trips. Last backpacking was a
week on the Bibbulmun Track at the end of September and will be spending 3
weeks backpacking in NZ during February. Would like some decent outings
before then.
I am a 62 yr "old" woman and consider myself to be quite fit.
Am hoping for lots of responses!!!
Marion.

Australian newspaper ....

One of those killed was a Perth heart specialist.

Hi Guys,
I have been silently watching what has been occuring on yahoo bushwalking group.
I really enjoy reading about hiking stuff. I love hiking but I don't have
enough time to get out and do it enough. Keep up the fabulous work and keep
SPAM out. I am way up in North Queensland. Looking forward to reading all of
your adventures.

Hi

Dave Osborne has added to new walk descriptions and photo pages to his
website. The walks are in the northern part of John Forest National Park,
just out of Perth
<http://www.walkgps.com/Northern%20John%20Forrest%20Nat.%20Park%20Walk.htm>
and in Walyunga National Park, which is again on the outskirts of Perth
<http://www.walkgps.com/Walyunga%20Walk.htm>.

Enjoy.

Buen camino

Dear Marion
I am a member of "Perth Bush walking Club" and I'd be interested to do
some walks, providing the temperatures are not at boiling point. I'd also be
interested to do some stretches of the Bibbulmum track between Walpole and
Albany, or Cape to Cape track.
As I am doing shift work, my hiking has to fit around my job, but I get
plenty of time of,
            thanks Dorothea (52 years young)
