Hi

For those interested, BackpackGearTest.org has completed the following
product tests during July, 2004. These tests are undertaken for no monetary
gain by BackpackGearTest.org and are undertaken in the field by backpackers
(hikers, trampers, bushwalkers) normally over a six month period . The
tester, upon completing the reporting requirements gets to keep the gear at
the end of the test.

Just click on the link to be taken to the test reports.

Ralph.
Those packs were originally designed for the military to be used in
conjunction with other food and drinks I find them filling but then I don't
eat a lot out there I do drink a lot of liquids though not beer or wine I
wait till I get to a pub for that !

Neville/Harry.
Thanks for the uplift in getting out of the home by having the family get
rid of you.
As intimated, I am leaning towards the Tassie dehyds for taste. The only
problem seems to be the amount contained in them. I am now convinced that
the amounts in the packets was worked out by a female ( no arrows please)
who is on a diet and only walks to the letter box and back.
I am looking forward to my break and introduce my mate to the delights of
camping and backpacking.
If anyone is out on the Bib on Sunday 4th July, a group of Teachers and
Support Staff from Perth Ladies College are doing a day walk from Randall
Rd. north of Monadocks to Sullivan Rock for lunch, then onto a Pub
destination undisclosed to me at this stage. Should you meet them say hello
to Trish Montgomery in the group and ask where is the support car carrying
the gear. That is their mode of operation for day walks and overnighters,
very little carrying, maximum comfort. Great if you can arrange it.
Ralph.

I get a bit, How do I say it ? Jealous, Critical, Upset, Annoyed, when I am
home playing with the computer or working around the house when I should be
out walking but I figure if I get unbearable enough the family will gladly
boot me out of the house and drop me off hopefully near the track somewhere,

I've tried all those packs mainly the Australian ones made in Tas and found
most to be okay for a change.
The good thing is they are light, why I remember giving Andrew one to try at
Torbay hut last year I think it was a Tuna Mornay I had a lot of them at the
time.
Take it easy mate and hope you enjoy your walk, I will see you one day out
there I promise.

Hello Harry
I am only a mere mortal with limited funds, but I did take advantage of
Mike's offer (Mountain Designs) of 30% off to buy up. I think I am starting
to lean towards the Adventure Foods regarding taste and full tummy based on
the limited ones that I have tried.
Being a self employed tradesman I can only get away a few times a year so
the cost is not prohibited when the trips are 3 to 4 days. My mate John is a
Headmaster with plenty of funds and he will be supplying the C.Cardboard and
HE WILL BE CARRYING IT. When I last spoke to him, he was talking 4lt packs
( yes, plural) hence the slow progress to get to Mundaring.
I do enjoy nice gear and I am slowly accumulating it by way of savings and
gifts after dropping hints to family.
My latest toy (from my pocket) is the L.E.D.Module 5 lights for the Petzl
Duo as an accessory. I have had the Dou for 13 months
(the standard one) and I wanted a softer light for the playing of Yahtzee
and to last longer. This trip will be a good test of the light.
Anthony, I will pass on your comments to John. You two seem to be of a
kindred spirit.

Ralph,

The Chateau Cardboard is an essential item. Jettison other things to
make room!
I have fond memories of a two-night stay in Mt Dale hut (really heavy,
persistent rain kept me the second night) which was made bearable by
having suitable quantities of C. Cardboard and a little radio to listen
to the football.
Must have been a long time ago, though, as I recall Richmond won.

Cheers,

The only thing you have to report on about Commercial Freeze Dried Food is
if you have plenty of money to throw round, you can afford to buy it,
otherwise for us lesser mortals its back to the pasta, curry powder and
dehydrated veg mix for a fraction of the cost.
Personally I would rather spend the money on buying nice gear that will last

Thanks everyone who has responded to my query. I do not know why I have not
received aushiker news, but it appears that I am back on the loop.
My ambitious plan to take my mate from Sullivan Rock to Mundaring Pub had to
be amended after a dry run with a load WITHOUT the Chateau Cardboard in the
pack, so we are now leaving from Brookton Highway on Sunday 11th July and
reaching the Mundaring Pub on Thursday 15th, so its 4 nights and 5 days. We
are taking it very easy.
My friend ,John wants to try the Freeze Dry foods also, so I should have a
list to report on.
Ralph.

consider the Coastal Plains Walk Trail and the Murray Valley Circuit (3 days).

Not deleted, not bouncing, so not sure what your problem is. You can
always check the list activity online at
<http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/aushiker/> including the messages. It is
a public archive.

Good luck and have fun! Which section are you planning on doing?

Well you need to become a tester, the same as for all the gear testing
there. That said, we are not likely to be doing food again.

My name is David Maxwell, I'm 57 years of age and have lived in the Perth
metropolitan area for the last 26 years.

A bit over a year ago I was persuaded by a friend to do the section of the
Bib Track from Brookton Highway to Kalamunda. This was my very first walk &
I really enjoyed it, but circumstances have prevented me from doing any
other walks until about 4 months ago. I'm now fairly addicted, but have been
restricted to day walks due to lack of time for prolonged treks.

Recently I've managed the following day walks:

John Forrest Nat Park - Eagle View Trail
Mundaring Loop Trail (Walked the bike trail)
Carinyah Trail (Walked the bike trail)
Thompsons Lake
Jarrahdale - Kitty's Gorge
Jarrahdale - Balmoral Trail to POW Camp Ruins & return
Sullivan's Rock - Bib Track to Monadnocks & return by Herold Road
Sullivan's Rock - Bib Track Mt Cooke to Powerlines Road & return by Cooke
Road
Yanchep National Park - Cockatoo Ridge

I have hopes of doing the Cape to Cape in Spring (If I can get time away
from my business). I'd also like to do more of the Bib Track, hopefully over
5 to 7 days at a time. I'm still in the process of accumulating all the gear
to be able to do these walks, so any advice I can get would be very welcome.

Any further info on interesting walks would also very appreciated.

Regards,

David

Dear Fellow Walkers/Backpackers

A bit like little Johnny Howard isn't it.

This is a mail list check.

I have not received an e-mail from the group since the 9/6/04 and I am beginning
to wonder if I have been deleted from the mailing list.

The reason for my paranoia is that I had to take my computer to the doctor to
have it clensed of a Spyware programme that I inherited as a virus and I wonder
if I have been dropped from the mailing list.

If anyone can confirm that the 9th was the last message sent by Mike Beal then
my mail address is still ok.

Walking news:- I am off on the Bib again in the first week of the school
holidays taking a mate who has never camped before who has visions of plenty of
Chateau Cardboard to be partaken in the evenings:- he has no idea of weight, so
I will take him for a dry run with a full pack around a park near him. Fun
aside, I will be trying out different Freeze Dried foods and I will be giving a
report on them to the group as I find them. Please let me know if you think that
I am wasting my time, or that it is not interesting, let me know, as I have
broad shoulders, but I am having fun trying the different meals.

Andrew, how do you get to be a food taster and supplied with samples so that
yopu can report in Gear Tester?

I am a willing guinea pig when it comes to food.

Ralph Ditton.

Hi All

This is a blatant plug for BackpackGearTest. We want more Testers to test
FREE gear. Why? Read on.

BackpackGearTest.org or BGT (as it is known) is an international volunteer
organisation dedicated to testing gear. It is strictly NON-commercial:
there are NO fees (and no advertising either). The aim is to really test
walking gear and to report on that gear for the benefit of other walkers.
These reviews can be read by anyone at all around the world, for free.

So what is involved?

Well, BGT talks with vendors and persuades them to put items up for test.
These items are advertised and qualified Testers send in applications.
Usually there are three to five copies of any item, so three to five
Testers are chosen. They get the gear, test it and report to BGT on it, and
then are allowed to keep the gear. Actually, more and more vendors are now
coming to us to OFFER gear.

In more detail then:

Anyone can become involved. To become a 'qualified Tester' you have to
submit two 'Owner Reviews' (ORs) and have them accepted. BGT reviews have
to meet certain standards, but these can be found on the
http://www.backpackgeartest.org web site and the BGT Editors will help you
meet the standards. The more ORs you write, the better your chances of
getting selected for the big items of gear. The day-to-day traffic about
the tests and reports is on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BackpackGearTest/
feel free to lurk. It's free too.

Once you have had two ORs accepted you are a 'newbie'. This means you can
Field Test one significant bit of gear. Sometimes minor items can also be
tested. The sequence for a Field Test is:

* On receipt of the gear: notify BGT that day. * Within 7 days: submit an
Initial Report: first impressions, without any field testing. * Within 2
months: submit a Field Report (FR) based on actual use in the field. *
After 6 months: submit a Long Term Report (LTR) - did it wear out etc.

After this the gear is yours to keep.

Once you have finished one full Test (i.e., submitted the LTR) you
'graduate', and can then apply for multiple items. The purpose of the slow
intro is to ensure that everyone who is given a bit of gear WILL complete
the full Test and WILL write the reports. Before that the gear belongs to
BGT. That's the deal. In practice, many experienced Testers may have six or
more items under Test at one time. That's fine, but you do have to write
all the reports.

So far I have become involved in testing:

* MSR Overland Carbon trekking poles - In progress.
* Red Ledge Cirrostratus Jacket - In progress.
* Shock Doctor Ultra 3 Footbeds - In progress.
* Mountain Safety Research (MSR) Missing Link Tent - In progress.
* Watchful Eye Designs O.P. Sak bags - In progress.
* Cascade Designs Therm-A-Rest ProLite 4S Sleeping Pad - In progress.
* Outdoor Research Rocky Mountain Packcloth Gaiters - In progress.
* AntiGravityGear Mamas Kitchen Cookset - Completed.
* Tektite Trek Lithium Flashlight - Completed
* Bite Trail Low Sandals - Completed
* Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone 3800 backpack - Completed.
* Enertia Trail Foods Single Meals - Completed.
* Leatherman Squirt S4 - Completed.
* Red Ledge Voyager Rain Gear - Completed.
* Birdiepal Junior Umbrella - Completed.
* Duray Socks - Completed.

Do these things look interesting? And how! There are some big brand names
included, as well as smaller brands we seldom see here in Australia - but
which are available over the web.

Why do vendors participate? Because BGT is now way up on the Google hit
list for people searching for info on new gear. It's becoming a major gear
reference site, at least in America, because unlike the magazines it is
unbiased.

In addition, I get to read about some of the latest gear developments,
including the stuff from the smaller manufacturers. And especially in the
lightweight and ultralightweight areas. This happens on the
backpackgeartest@yahoogroups.com channel, open to all to read.

So why am I advertising this?

BGT needs more Testers for the gear that is being offered. Many of the
current Testers have as much gear as they can handle (max'ed out), and yet
more gear is being offered to BGT.

Have a look at the BGT web site and the Yahoo group, and see what you think.

Cheers
Andrew Priest

The Walpole - Peaceful Bay and Pemberton - Northcliffe areas are my absolute
favorite part of the "BT" so far, check out that Fitzgerald campsite over
looking the river, awesome. Just being in those areas will make you happy
no matter what the weather. Walk about there when there are few people

From Outdoor Australia magazine:

The Great Australian Bushwalk is a free, one day national event consisting
of a series of bushwalks held across Australia on Sunday 24th October 2004.
Each state and territory across Australia will be participating in the walk
which promotes community spirit, physical fitness and the Australian
environment.
Created by the National Parks Association of NSW and brought to you by a
nationwide consortium of state-wide national parks associations and
affiliated bushwalking groups, the Great Australian Bushwalk looks set to
become a major event on the Australian calendar.

There has never before been a national, annual, day-long event dedicated to
bushwalking which brings together the community to celebrate this healthy
activity which promotes many of the values underlying the Australian way of
life.

The inaugural Great Australian Bushwalk was held in NSW last year and its
success has led to its development into a national event for 2004. It will
offer a comprehensive range of walks options catering for all levels of
physical ability from easy walks on well-established tracks to more
challenging walks in remote locations.

event, please visit www.greataustralianbushwalk.org.au

AVON VALLEY EXPLORER – 18 KM + 850 M – Andrew Priest 0429 413916

This medium paced weekend backpack will be mostly off-track exploring of
the southern half of the Avon Valley National Park. The aim is to explore
creeks, ridge lines and Wandoo areas in the park. This is an exploratory
walk of the area, thus members on this walk should be comfortable with this
approach to bushwalking. We will be wild camping and relying on creeks for
our water supply. Do expect a lot of off-track walking (90%), a few steep
climbs, and hopefully a waterfall or two. We will be heading off early
Saturday morning and returning late Sunday afternoon. Andrew rates this
backpack as a medium/hard. Expression of interest to Andrew via email
please at <mailto:Andrew@...>Andrew@....
