Hi All,

The official notice of this fire does not say so, but I saw a report tonight
that the bridge fire may have been deliberately lit.
Words fail me. Such a lovely, tranquil spot.
Apparently a nasty fire, and rather too close to Monadnocks for my liking.
Cheers,
Tony

Hi

The Bibbulmun Track is currently closed between Brookton Highway and
Sullivan Rock. Apparently the Canning River Bridge has been burnt down. I
can't current access CALM's website so can't check for more up to date
information.

Regards
Andrew

Hi

Some information from a fire controller at the Avon and Wyalunga National
Park fires on the weekend. This is a direct quote from his posting to the
Geocaching Australia forums at
<http://forum.geocaching.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=1955>.

"Hi all Fire now appears under control with only a small area still
burning. Both parks still closed. AReas worst affected are: Woodsome hill,
Shady hills Medikal hill, Jumperkine hill, Walyunda lookout, Smiths Mill,
Moondyne hill, both sides of Brokman River. Most burning occured North side
of river. Railway access track made life easier on the South side. As most
are aware the is very limited access to many places on the Nth side of
river. Another fire was burning further up river at Avon Park. I have not
been able to access info this far up as my area of ops was Walyunga. I will
post info as it comes to hand. This one may have been deliberate."

In an earlier posting Oznaturist indicated "The fire has burnt from South
of the Walyunga lookout both sides of the river throught to Avon Park and
Beyond Bald Hill."

Looks like some planned walks will be on hold for a year or two :-(

Regards
Andrew

Hi Andrew, yes I remember you were a 'local'.

We were in the Kaimanawa Forest Park. Went in off Clements Mill Rd which
is off the Napier-Taupo Rd. From there an easy walk into Cascade Hut,
then a long (11hr) walk out down the Kaipo Valley and out past the site
of the Te Iringa Hut, which was burnt down a few years ago now.

Only 61... I was on a hard tramping trip the other weekend. There was
three of us and we had an 11 hour day on Sunday and I was the only one

We have one member of our club who is well into his 70s. He still comes
out on the odd tramping trip but he generally prefers sea kayaking now.

I look forward to viewing these at home later tonight over a glass of

Would you believe that my office net nanny bans access to Yahoogroups on

So I've had to forward them to the less officious surroundings of the

Well the fact is Ralph I like to take the photos so its hard to be in any,
however Margaret did snap one of me near Carey Brook on the way to Beedelup
a couple of days ago its in the files now.
Thanks for asking, now you might see me struggling along one day on the
track and recognise me.

Hi Anthony, you made me laugh !
Just got back from Balingup to Pemberton 8 days and 7 nights used the tent
(just the netting) in four of the huts.. Blackwood, Donnelly, Beavis, and
Beedelup no flies or mossies to worry you, everywhere I go from now on, the
tent goes to.
Even have a photo of the tent inside the hut at Beedelup !
Got some other great photos to share with you and the members and a story,
wait for a couple of days for me to settle into the boring suburbia again
and I'll start posting and typing.
Its sure great to be home again ?.......... Yeh right.

Hi Harry,

Might have to think about that after my experiment with a flash new tarp
tent went badly wrong at the Nerang campsite rebuild.
It's a Hilleberg lightweight tarp, lovely light material and only about
800 grams. Support comes from two walking poles.
HOWEVER, I didn't realise how difficult it was to put the poles up by
yourself (especially when the guy ropes bought specially for the purpose
were still on my kitchen table 75kms away).
Finally got it done with some amateurish lines made from nylon cord,
then discovered that the tarp guy ropes were fitted with some you-beaut
Swedish tensioning toggles. Neither I nor other people I asked could
understand how these worked (it's probably very simple, but it was
getting dark and I was very tired).
So, try to get tension by tying the cord to tent pegs. It sort of
worked, but I ended up with a very sad and saggy looking shelter.
Humid night led to a lot of condensation.
AND the bloody poles slipped out from under the tarp at the least
provocation.
It all looks very easy on the internet sites, but the truth of tarp
camping is far from rosy. Mercifully it did not rain and there were no
mossies.
Back to the tent search . . . . .

I bought a MSR Hubba Hubba 2 person tent this year when they first came out
and would thoroughly recommend them.
Its lightweight, VERY lightweight, easy to put up and plenty of room inside.
We have even used it in the huts on the Bib track, just the inner that is
to keep out the mosquitoes.
A great product
Check one out, I bought mine at Mainpeak in Cott.

Hi

For those interested, BackpackGearTest.org has completed the following
product tests during November, 2004. These tests are undertaken for no
monetary gain by BackpackGearTest.org and are undertaken in the field by
backpackers (hikers, trampers, bushwalkers) normally over a six month
period . The tester, upon completing the reporting requirements gets to
keep the gear at the end of the test.

Just click on the link to be taken to the test reports.

Hi

From the Bibbulmun Track Foundation website:

"The new Nerang campsite was opened on Sunday 28 November. It is in a new
location within 300m of the old site.

The entirely new campsite was constructed by Foundation volunteers & CALM
staff on the weekend on November 27 & 28. The new Nerang Campsite has a
larger shelter, more tent sites and a second water tank at the new toilet.
The trail has also been realigned to take walkers through a more scenic
section of the area (no hills though and it does not increase the distance
to be walked).

The old site will now be rehabilitated and all remaining facilities
removed. Walkers should note that there is still some minor work to be
completed on the shelter this week. Also the vegetation around the campsite
is particularly fragile and walkers should always remain on formed trails.
Please supervise children at this site while rehabilitation takes place.

Both the Nerang and Mt Cooke Campsites were destroyed in the fire of 2003.
Mt Cooke Campsite is also available for use.

Unlike most original Bibbulmun Track campsite constructions in the late
1990's, no parts of the Nerang rebuild were prefabricated. Thus all
construction work was performed on site.

Thanks to all who worked on site on this mammoth task;

From the Foundation: Mylene Bonnin, Robin Campbell, Bert & Theresa Dewse,
Tony Dyson, Jim Freeman, Hans Hoette, Debbie & Peter Holst, Tony Jennings,
Alan Jones, Graham Murdoch, John Murphy, Chris & Gwen Plunkett, Colin & Jan
Read, Eric Rous, Steve Sertis.

From CALM: Kym Pearce, Geoff Styles and Charles Kerfoot."

Andrew

Hi Everyone

  From the Bibbulmun Track Foundation:

"Please note that open fires are now banned on the Bibbulmun Track from
Kalamunda (Map 1) through to Brockman Highway (Map 4). The ban is place
from December 2004 to the end of March 2005.

This means that only fuel stoves should be used at all 26 campsites from
the northern terminus to the half way point of the Track, just south of
Gregory Brook campsite."

The following is taken from Mountain Designs website
<http://www.mountaindesigns.com/>. There is a tribute's page at
<http://p223.ezboard.com/fqueenslandclimbingdiscussion.showMessage?topicID=1305.\
topic>.

"Pioneering Australian climber and Outdoors businessman Rick White died
peacefully on 26 November 2004 in Winchester Hospital in the UK following a
short but determined battle with cancer. He was 58 years old. Rick and his
devoted second wife Jane travelled to the UK three weeks ago in a desperate
attempt to seek natural treatment for a particularly aggressive brain tumour.

Rick founded Mountain Designs in 1974 in a continuing effort to make a
living out of being involved in the pursuit he was most passionate about,
climbing. Rick built Mountain Designs into a major part of the Australian
Outdoor retail market by providing leading edge products using the latest
technologies available. After an absence from 1991 to 2001 Rick was asked
to re-join Mountain Designs in the capacity of research, development manager.

Rick soon took it upon himself to drive the companies sponsorship programs
with the goal that Mountain Designs stayed true to its' heritage through
involvement with both grass roots and national climbing projects. Always a
trail blazer, Rick also actively drove the companies participation and
sponsorship of more modern day outdoor pursuits such as Adventure Racing.

All great companies have an undefinable quality, a 'soul,' that makes them
special. Mountain Designs 'soul' is a reflection of Ricks influences over
the past 30 years. Rick was a great Colleague, Mentor, Ambassador, and Mate
and we will miss him greatly.

His Legacy will live on through Mountain Designs and the companies
continued commitment to the Climbing and Alpine community which Rick was
most passionate about and our deepest sympathies go out to Ricks' family
and friends that we know are many."

Andrew
