> An ORCA supporter has drawn to our attention the plight of Jo, a lovely
> woman trying to save three unloved stray cats in her area (northern NSW).
> Another local cat recently died under strange circumstances, and Jo
> strongly suspects her neighbours of poisoning. This is due to the
> neighbours vocalising their resentment of her feeding the strays, and
> there is now some urgency, as they have been caught throwing morsels of
> food over her fence, in addition to getting some of the cats stoned on
> marijuana. Jo has managed to get two of the strays tame enough to get them
> inside her house, and is continuing to tame the other one.
>
> While Jo would love to keep the three cats, she is unable to face the bill
> of $250 to get the two semi-tame ones speyed, vaccinated and microchipped

> Syndrome, hence is struggling to live off her disability pension, let
> alone taking on these additional costs. The two cats in the house are
> currently on heat, and need to be desexed as soon as possible.
>
> If you could all find it in your hearts to donate $10 to help Jo, we can

HELP TIGER CAGED IN KOREA HOTEL

The Captive Animals' Protection Society has received complaints from
visitors to the Lotte Hotel in Central Pusan, Korea, about a Siberian Tiger
named Caesar, who is 'on display' to guests. The tiger lives in a small pen
with artificial rocks and plants, a small stream and an astro-turf floor.

The side of the cage is metal bars and the glass front looks out onto the
breakfast room. Visitors have told us that the tiger has nowhere to hide
from people and has little protection from the elements as the roof is open
to the sky. One distraught hotel visitor told us "when it is sunny he has
little shade, when it rains he gets wet and when its cold he has to break
the ice on the stream to drink."

Another visitor informed us he has been there for 8 years and is used in a
'show' in the evenings.

Despite complaints to government officials nothing has been done.

Please contact the hotel and the London office of the Korean Government
asking them to intervene and find a more suitable
home for this tiger, and for them to ask for the assistance of animal
protection organisations.

Tell the Korea National Tourism Organisation that you will not go on holiday
to Korea while animals are kept in these conditions.

The hotel chain is the largest in Korea with many worldwide government
officials and business people staying there.

WOMAN TO KEEP LEOPARDS AT HOME
By Katrina Creer

A WINDSOR woman has won council approval to fulfil a lifetime dream of
keeping two leopards in her front yard.

Kirstin Fedderson, a film animal trainer whose credits include Babe II and
The Island Of Dr Moreau, admitted surprise when
her plans were accepted by Hawkesbury City Council.

The leopard cubs - one black and another spotted - will be imported from
California in the next two years, pending a Federal
Government licence.

They will be kept in a specially constructed 20m cage, with one side
screened to protect horses on an adjoining property.

"The area has become more suburbia than rural, so part of me was expecting
it to be rejected, but everyone has been so
positive," Ms Fedderson told The Sunday Telegraph. "It is really nice to be
pulled up by locals full of enthusiasm.

"Not even my closest neighbours have been negative."

There is only one other leopard owned privately in Australia, which is
covered under the Non-Indigenous Animals Act.

Ms Fedderson said the leopards will fill a void in the local film industry
for big cats and will also be used in breeding programs.

She studied leopard training under the guidance of US expert Steve Martin,
whom she met while working on Babe II.

They will join a menagerie of six horses, a dog, six doves and three fish
after clearing quarantine.

The cage, to be kept at the front of her battle-axe property, will also have
vehicle access for added security.

She said the recent attack on Las Vegas animal trainer Roy Horn had not
deterred her.

"Leopards are sleeker, which makes them easier to handle than lions, and are
a bit like a well-trained domestic cat.

"I'm talking about them as if they're wild animals, which they won't be
because they are bred in captivity.

"I don't want them to ever escape. If anyone finds them loose they'll be an
easy target for guns."

Neighbour Janine Forrest said she was not nervous.

"We trust her completely. We know that it'll be safe," she said.

A man was charged with reckless endangerment in the US last week after a
400-pound tiger was found in his New York
apartment.

The tiger, named Ming, was found in the apartment of 37-year-old Antoine
Yates, after he sought hospital treatment for
a bite, which he said was from a dog.

Yates said he did not have any training in raising animals.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Do you think it's right that a private citizen (no matter how well
qualified) should be able to keep exotic animals as pets?!

Do you think importing two leopards to a miserable existence in a 20m cage
is right? (A 20m cage in the outer Sydney suburbs!!)

If you think it's wrong on all counts, the page below shows all the
councillors at Hawkesbury Council. Send them polite emails to let them know
that you disagree with their decision, and that it sets a horrible
precedent.

The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of NZ have recently launched an
online petition on their website. The aim of this petition is to eliminate
the illegal Pirate fisheries that currently exist, and threaten not only
seabirds and other marine wildlife, but the fisheries themselves.

This petition has been born from the John Ridgway Save the Albatross Voyage
and the BirdLife International 'Save the Albatross' Campaign. It is
supported by BirdLife International and partner groups in over 100
countries, Greenpeace and the British Antarctic Survey. John Ridgway and
representatives of conservation organisations will present the petition to
the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation in June 2004.

Subject: Vote in 60 Minutes Poll - Genetically Modified Animals

Last night, 60 Minutes aired a segment called "Reality Bites", about the
genetic engineering of animals for food and xenotransplantation. They
showed some shocking images of what can go wrong physically when animals are
cloned or have foreign genes inserted - as well as outlining the
possibilities of pig viruses crossing the species barrier and potentially
unleashing a new, 'catastrophic' human pandemic. There is currently a poll
on the site (link below) asking "Should animals be genetically modified?"

This morning, it was running at 28% Yes and 72% No.

AAHR is completely opposed to the genetic modification of animals.

Help save our last remaining complete structured Kangaroo mobs!
Please read this Petition all the way to the bottom and
sign your NAME and ADDRESS

                                                             Petition

TO THE HONOURABLE AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF
                                     REPRESENTATIVES ASSEMBLED IN PARLIAMENT:

The petition of the citizens of Australia and from citizens of the world
community draw to the attentions of the House of the Australian Government,
assembly;led in Canberra, ACT 2600, that the Southern Tablelands, Australian
Capital Territory and Surrounding areas, be kept permanently free from
Commercial Kangaroo Slaughter.

The recent fires and the still ongoing drought (10 years in some areas),
legal and illegal shootings have decimated the NSW Kangaroo Population by
50%.
The Goulburn, Braidwood, Gundagai, Yass, Queanbeyan and the Cooma Rural Land
Protection Areas are the last undisturbed areas where Kangaroos still have
their rich, complex, family structured mobs intact. Alpha males are still
fighting for the right to pass on their strongest genes and are the much
needed role model for younger males, while Females teach their offspring how
to survive. The areas mentioned are also home to a number of endangered and
threatened Birds, Reptiles and Vertebrates.

It is of utmost importance to protect the remaining Kangaroos from today`s
grizzliest, cruelest and most barbaric Commercial Kangaroo Industry. An
Industry where defenceless joeys are bashed to death and older joeys are
left alone to fend for themselves only to die of exposure, being eaten by
predators or to starve to death, and where injured animals are skinned
alive. An Industry where injured kangaroo get away to die a slow and
agonizing cruel death.
Tourists want to see our beloved national Tourism Icon, the kangaroo,
worldwide known as Skippy--alive.

The Tourism Industry should start to recognize that our Kangaroos would
bring much needed jobs to this region and prosperity to everyone who seeks
it!
The citizens of Australia and petitioners worldwide therefore request the
House to prevent the commercial slaughter of kangaroos in the above areas
from occurring!

Help save our last remaining complete structured Kangaroo Mobs is hoping to
get 10.000 signatures on this, then pass it on to sign.
I do not know how much time we have for this Petition as they are going to
start shooting possibly as early as the beginning of next year 2004.
Therefore this Petition will only run until the 15th of January 2004.
I would like to ask the person who is the full hundred (100dredth
signature,or 200dredth, 300dredth signature etc.to be so kind and e-mail the
signatures to me at antjesikruemel33@.... or post it to A.
Struthmann, Lot 19 Jerangle Rd. Bredbo NSW. 2626 Australia.

If you receive this petition and do nothing about it but delete it, your
selfishness knows no bounds. Signing is such a small effort to make. After
you read it, please add your NAME and ADDRESS at the bottom.

How to set it up:
1. Copy the entire e-mail. (This will avoid the endless of these >)
2. Paste it into a new e-mail
3. Sign your NAME and ADDRESS at the bottom.
4. Then send it to EVERYONE you know.

The Brazilian congress is now voting on a project that will reduce the
Amazon forest to 50% of its size. It will take 1 MINUTE to read this, but
PLEASE put your names on the list and forward this on as instructed below.
The area to be deforested is 4 times the size of Portugal and would be
mainly used for agriculture and pastures for livestock. All the wood is to
be sold to international markets in the form of wood chips, by large
multinational companies. The truth is that the soil in the Amazon forests
useless without the forest itself. Its quality is very acidic and the region
is prone to constant floods. At this time more than 160,000 square
kilometers deforested with the same purpose are abandoned and in the process
of becoming deserts, meaning that this proposal is in the short! -term
interests of a few, and in the long term interests of none.

Please copy the text into a 'new e-mail' put your complete name in the list

my two cents: i think "hero" is going a little too far, but it is refreshing
to see that some people still care. At least they had an AR group monitoring
the conditions, I never like seeing horses being used in movies en masse.
You can never be too sure of how they are treated. Chris.

Tom Cruise hailed as animal rights hero
Washington, Dec.5 (ANI): Film actor Tom Cruise is being seen as an animal
rights hero after he impressed horse watchdogs on the set of his new movie
"The Last Samurai".
Officials from horse watchdog group "American Humane" were keeping track on
the way horses were treated during the battle sequences in the film. They
were so happy with Cruise's approach that they sent him a letter thanking
him for his generous efforts.
The "Top Gun" star was so thrilled that he decided to reprint the letter
during the final credits of the film.
Cruise says, "You see it at the end of the film, the letter we received from
them thanking us for how well we treated the horses. No horses were injured,
which is kind of stunning when you consider this film. They trained almost
as long as I did. I love animals."
A spokesman for American Humane says appreciatively, "We wish that every
celebrity would be as pro-active as Tom Cruise was regarding the treatment
of the animals. He was amazing." (ANI)

Please take the time to write to this barbaric gallery, requesting that they
withdraw Nathalia Edenmont's exhibition. An excellent example of a letter is
below, and the contact details and links for the gallery is at the bottom of
the email.

Thankyou

My letter to Wetterling Gallery

Dear Madam/Sir,

I am writing to protest at your exhibition of photos using dead animals
supposedly killed and photographed by Nathalia
Edenmont.

You ask in your newsletter "Is it permissible to kill animals in the name of
art?" and you make an analogy in your newsletter "But now they are so
beautiful - and the insight into the reality behind them gives rise to
thoughts about people's shallowness and double standards. Many of us eat
meat, wear leather or use make-up that has been tested on animals, without
this arousing especially strong reactions. But when a picture shows a dead
rabbit, all hell breaks loose. ".

You also write " She has killed the animals in as humane a way as possible."
What was that method? Isn't it illegal to murder animals in Sweden? Were the
animals humanely euthanased by a vet? What was the name of the Veterinarian?
Did the veterinarian know he/she was euthanasing the animals for art? Does
this break the Veterinarian's code of trying to help animals or couldn't
Nathalia find a Vet to kill the animals? If Nathalia has killed the animals
herself and admits to doing so, has she
broken any of Sweden's animal cruelty laws eg through inhumane killing or
killing animals cruelly?

It is morally and ethically wrong to kill animals for use in art.Animals are
eaten by meat-eating humans but the rationale used by meat eating humans is
that they need animal protein as part of their diets. That is their belief,
misguided or not. There are also millions of vegetarians in the world who
avoid eating dead animals and live a cruelty free lifestyle by buying
non-animal products. Your exhibit makes a mockery of the beliefs of vegans,
vegetarians and animal lovers.

By allowing an exhibition of pictures using the parts of dead companion
animals and stating that the animals were killed to make the pictures shows
both yourselves and the artist to have sadistic tendencies. Would you allow
the use of dead humans deliberately killed by murderers to be used for
photographic art? Humans are only another species of animal, and they are
often the most sadistic and nasty species who kill for no justifiable reason
as evidenced by your exhibition.

How desperate are you and the artist to attract visitors that you would
stoop to the use of deliberately killed companion animals photographed in
macabre poses and call this art?

Your exhibition is nothing but a nasty and macabre publicity stunt and your
gallery and the artist should be ashamed of yourselves. The best thing you
can do with this exhibition is to close it down.

The exhibition by Nathalia Edenmont is just a desperate act on the part of
someone who must have little talent to succeed in art without using
publicity stunts such as deliberately killing animals to draw attention to
themselves. By showing the exhibition, and advertising that the animals were
deliberately killed for the exhibit, your gallery has given some credibility
to senseless acts of cruelty towards animals by humans.

Shame on Wetterling Gallery for showing Nathalia Edenmont's exhibit.

Marguerite Wegner

Is it permissible to kill animals in the name of art?
http://www.wetterlinggallery.com/newsletter/newsletter.htm

Most people who see Nathalia's pictures for the first time are impressed by
how beautiful they are. It takes a few seconds before you start to wonder
how they have been made. A photo-montage? Some kind of digital manipulation?
When you look closer, there is something slightly distorted in the rabbit's
expression. Something slightly abnormal about the face of the cat. Slowly
you realise that the animal is dead, that the animal has died for the sake
of the picture. Is this acceptable?

One can, of course, choose to think that it is always wrong to kill animals
in the name of art. That nothing can defend Nathalia Edenmont. But if you
feel more doubtful, we would very much like to explain Nathalia's reasoning,
and how we at Wetterling Gallery argue when we exhibit her art.

Art arouses thoughts and poses questions that are necessary. Nathalia's
beautiful pictures are frightening in the same way that many other beautiful
things hide some sort of suffering. One can enjoy beautiful exteriors, or
one can go beneath the surface and find things that perhaps you do not want
to know about. If Nathalia's pictures had been repugnant, it would have been
easy to reject them. But now they are so beautiful - and the insight into
the reality behind them gives rise to
thoughts about people's shallowness and double standards. Many of us eat
meat, wear leather or use make-up that has been tested on animals, without
this arousing especially strong reactions. But when a picture shows a dead
rabbit, all hell breaks loose.

Nathalia grew up in the former Soviet Union, and she has a razor sharp eye
for paradoxes and gaps in our western morals. She is not the first to use
dead animals in her works of art - that has been done at least since the
1700s, but she is a contemporary debater who provokes questions which
nowadays everyone should ask themselves. Her pictures tell lies in front of
our faces, but they are not alone in this - the lies exist all around us
every day, without us questioning them.

There is nothing illegal in Nathalia's art. She has killed the animals in as
humane a way as possible. Has she been guilty of a moral crime? We do not
think so. We think that art is of vital importance. What do you think?

Hi to all
The Today show had the safari hunting of crocodiles, segement on this AM,
with the jounalists, appearing to think it is a good idea. So on National TV
they have called for Submissions.

Please write a brief note to David Kemp Parliament House Canberra demanding
they NOT allow trophy safari hunting of crocodiles in the Northern
Territory...do it today if possible...just a short 'snappy' letter that you
find safari hunting repulsive and a relic of the good riddence,
unenlightened past.

Please point out that the "SUSTAINABLE WILDLIFE INDUSTRIES" policy that now
rules in Canberra is not wanted in Australia....not for crocodiles, not for
kangaroos, not for any of our wild native species. You can send a copy to
Mike Trimmer Director "Sustainable Wildlife Industries at Environment
Australia fax: 02 6274 1666
Kind regards,

   Hi Pam,
I heard NEWS RADIO yesterday that the NT Parks Service suppported this
proposal. However, Pat tells me that Kemp is opposed to it, which they did
say on the Radio.
I do not think it will go ahead but then, I could be wrong.'Sustainable
Wildlife Industries' Director Mike Trimmer Environment Australia, Canberra
promotes killing wildlife 'sustainably'..it is the catchcry of EA...
what 'sustainable' 'sustainability' or ecologically 'sustainanble' or
economically 'sustainable' simply means = killing animals.
By the way the two on the ABC Radio stupidly agreed with Safari
Hunting... so the two ABC poeple, Deb and Michael said it was a good idea)
So much for the ABC...they follow like so many sheep their lord and master
the Howard Gov't
   Thanks Pam,
   Kind regards,
   Maryland
I will post you latest from the Liberals push for introduction of the roo
meat killing industry...am sending to Claudette also.
   Has anyone heard from Diana?

I have mislaid my last newsletter so I don't know if you know about this
or not. I caught a bit of it today on ABC news radio. Crocodile

     Cheers Pam A
Safari crocodile hunting proposal - Adrienne Francis
After 30 years of protection, the commercial hunting of Saltwater
Crocodiles could resume in the Northern Territory. The Territory Government
is planning to overhaul the management of crocodiles and proposing 25
crocodiles be made available to the safari hunting industry. Since
protection the numbers of saltwater crocodiles has increased dramatically,
from 3000 to an estimated 60,000. But the safari-hunting concept is nothing
new, and has been proposed as part of previous management strategies. Kevin
Gleeson of Mary River Safari's told Adrienne Francis his foreign clients
would happily spend thousands of dollars to take home the iconic Australian
native. The sustainable use of native wildlife such as Saltwater Crocodiles
has been lead by Maningreeda's Djelk Rangers. Egg collection forms the
mainstay of their current operations, worth up to $100,000 each year. Six to
eight feet crocodiles are also caught on permit for skin and other products
worth $500 each and adult females are sold live to other crocodile farms for
breeding at around $2000 each. But the removal of these adults is not
necessarily good for egg production, and the community feels safari hunting
of a small number of large male crocodiles would provide a much greater
economic return and be more sustainable. Ray Hall, is Land Management
Coordinator for the regions Barwinunga Aboriginal Corporation and he's
hopeful the proposal won't fall on deaf ears this time. It's being suggested
that crocodiles taken for safari hunting must be greater than 4 m in length,
and killed humanely by shooting or harpooning followed by shootong. The
draft plan is available for public comment until January 23rd 2004

From Health Cares, Rochester General Hospital via Chapter 240s newsletter
(reprint from The Mended Hearts, Inc. publication, Heart Response)

AND THE BEAT GOES ON ...

If everyone who gets this sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save
at least one life.

Let's say it's 6:15 p.m. and you're driving home (alone of course), after an
unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated.

Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to
radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five
miles from the hospital nearest your home; unfortunately you don't know if
you'll be able to make it that far. What can you do?

You've been trained in CPR but the guy that taught the course neglected to
tell you how to perform it on yourself. Since many people are alone when
they suffer a heart attack; this article seemed to be in order.

Without help, the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins
to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very
vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough. The cough must
be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the
chest. And a cough must be repeated about every 2 seconds without let up
until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the
heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart
also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can
get to a hospital. Tell as
many other people as possible about this, it could save their lives!

2003 REASONS FOR OPTIMISM
By Bruce Friedrich, PETA

What we're up against can seem dispiriting; I pulled the info below together
for a journalist and thought I'd post it here to. Please reply to me
privately if you think I should add some other big stuff.

Preface:
Ten years ago, all of the following would have been assumed to have been a
long way off, and yet here we are, looking at the following figures,
prosecutions, initiatives, and so on, and they've happened. Rather than
state, for each item, "this couldn't have happened 5-10 years ago," please
just assume that if I have it down here, I consider it to be a remarkable
thing indeed.

* A Gallup Poll on animal rights in May 2003 found that Americans support
passing strict laws concerning the treatment of farmed animals, 62% to 35%,
while 96% of Americans say that animals deserve some protection from harm
and exploitation, and 25% say that animals deserve "the exact same rights as
people to be free from harm and exploitation."

* Animal behaviourists are finally studying society's most neglected
animals-rats, mice, and farmed animals (chickens, pigs, cows), and they're
publishing their findings, so we now know that rats and mice dream, play,
and have a sense of fun, and we know that chickens, pigs, and cows are every
bit as interesting and intelligent as any dog or cat.

* Just last year, Florida banned gestation crates, marking the first time a
standard agricultural practice has been banned in the U.S., and the state (a
conservative one) banned them by a margin of 55-45 percent.

* Last year, five of six ballot initiatives passed. In the past 13 years, 17
of 25 ballot initiatives for animals have passed. In previous history, only
one ballot initiative for animals had ever been passed (and it was
overturned).

* The very first felony cruelty prosecution for cruelty to farmed animals
took place a few years back in Belcross, N.C., when PETA went undercover on
a pig farm there. We secured more felony indictments in rural Oklahoma as
well after another investigation. These are not bastions of progressive
thought, yet they saw that pigs are more than meat.

* In 2000, McDonald's eliminated some standard abuses of laying hens, the
first time any large company had said that birds have some interests that
matter. Burger King, Wendy's, and the trade groups for fast food restaurants
(National Council of Chain Restaurants) and grocery stores (Food Marketing
Institute) are being brought along.

* This year, The New York Times and The New Yorker both did stories that
discussed chicken intelligence, which had never happened before. Once people
start to see chickens as interesting and deserving of respect, some basic
protections are sure to follow, and fewer and fewer people will eat them.

* A study this year funded by Safeway in the UK (not the same as Safeway
here) suggested that all the UK will be veg. by 2047, at present rates of
change.

* Last year, Burger King introduced a veggie burger in all of its 8,000 U.S.
outlets. McDonald's is now test marketing one in more than 500 restaurants
in California. Top companies see that the future is in vegetarian foods: In
1999, Kellogg's bought veggie food maker Worthington Foods, and Kraft bought
Boca Burger, the best veggie burger manufacturers. Check out
www.BocaBurger.com to see how much they're promoting it!

* Last year, two drunk guys were convicted of felony cruelty for abuse of a
calf, and misdemeanour cruelty for psychological abuse to the calf's mother,
who watched them drag her calf behind a truck. I have this article if you'd
like it.

* In the last few years, Germany put animal rights into their constitution,
the UK banned fur farming and an array of standard farming practices as
cruel. The EU is keeping countries out on the basis of animal concerns. Just
last night, the House of Commons voted overwhelmingly to ban fox hunting (I
had a letter in the Times of London and will have another item in the
Independent tomorrow). Can the U.S. be far behind?

* This year, Matthew Scully, senior speechwriter for George W. Bush,
published Dominion to rave reviews across the media spectrum. The book does
the best job I've ever seen of putting forth the perspective of a pig. Among
other amazing developments, Charles Colson and Pat Buchanan were both deeply
influenced and wrote and talked about the book. Buchanan did a cover story
in American Conservative about it and Colson recorded two of his weekly
commentaries on it!

* Animal Law is now taught at more than 20 law schools, where 10 years ago
it was only taught at Rutgers and the Vermont Law School. There are also two
animal law casebooks. The first just came out in 2000, and is already in its
second printing.

* A Zogby poll on vegetarian issues and concern for animals indicates that a
majority of Americans in all ethnic groups sometimes, often, or always eat
vegetarian at home. I sent along an email about this. It was commissioned by
PETA.

* Teens are the future, of course, and they're going veg. in even grander
droves! See www.PETA2.com <http://www.PETA2.com> , which is already more
popular than our vegetarian site, even.

* Two years ago, the U.S. Congress provided the first-ever appropriation for
the development of non-animal test methods by the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). The EPA currently requires more chemical toxicity testing on
animals than any other federal agency. In these painful tests, tens of
thousands of animals (including birds, mice, fish, frogs, rats, and turtles)
are killed each year. Dogs are poisoned with pesticides, and industrial
solvents are smeared into rabbits' eyes. Congress provided $4 million for
the EPA's FY 2002 budget "for the research, development, and validation of
non-animal, alternative chemical screening and prioritization methods."

* The Christian Vegetarian Association was founded a few years ago, and
Catholic Priest Fr. John Dear, S.J., has spoken out about vegetarianism as a
moral imperative for Christians. Even the Vatican has spoken out about the
degree to which modern factory farming systems are a violation of Catholic
teachings about kindness for animals. Last month, the Rt. Rev. Andrew
Linzey, a professor at Oxford and Anglican Priest recently likened cruelty
to animals (e.g., fox hunting) to rape and child abuse (victimizing those
who are weaker).

* Dennis Kucinich is, as far as we know, the first ever vegan Presidential
candidate, and he speaks about his veganism openly.

* Natural Foods Merchandiser (Jan 03) reports that retail sales of
vegetarian products have increased by 20 to 40 percent annually for the last
five years. In 1996, U.S. retail sales of veggie foods were $3.1 million; by
2001, sales had jumped to $1.25 billion. Mintel predicts sales will hit $2.8
billion by 2006. Five to nine percent of American adults-9.7 million to 17.4
million-are "almost vegetarians" who eat some meat, poultry or fish, and
another 38.6 million to 48.2 million Americans-20 percent to 25 percent of
the population-are "vegetarian inclined," eating four or more meatless meals
a week.

* The American Dietetic Association now has a vegetarian nutrition
specialist, a vegetarian working group, and advocates a vegetarian diet,
noting" a considerable body of scientific data suggest[ing] positive
relationships between vegetarian diets and risk reduction for several
chronic degenerative diseases and conditions, including obesity, coronary
artery disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and some types of cancer."

* Starbucks, 7-11, and just about every grocery store in the country all now
sell Silk brand soy milk, which is a boon to cows and their calves! Even
John Stossel (ABC News) did a piece promoting Silk as a tastier alternative
to cow's milk (It was his "Give me a break" segment, mocking the dairy
industry for trying to stop soy milk from being called milk!).

* Just this year, the NIH issued instructions to federally-funded
laboratories about how to properly kill mice and rats (who are not covered
under the AWA) after PETA's investigation into the Univ. of N.C. revealed
cruel killing methods and animals reviving in the "dead animal" cooler.

* There are now 17 cities with bans on animal circuses; this happened for
the first time in 1990 and they've been picking up steam, with 9 bans in
just the past two years.

* There are now six states with student choice laws (guaranteeing a
student's right not to dissect animals), 3 more states with statewide
policies, and 5 more large school districts that guarantee a student's right
not to dissect.

* Within just the last few years, more than 20 leading U.S. colleges and
universities have allowed their students to choose dissection alternatives.

* Despite years and years of defensive rationalizations, it is now true that
two-thirds of all U.S. medical schools, including Harvard, Stanford,
Columbia, and Yale, have eliminated the use of animals to train doctors.

Postlude, in the "won that battle" category: In the early eighties nearly
all cosmetic companies claimed to test their products on animals out of
necessity, but now there are
over 550 cruelty-free companies that sell cosmetics that have not been
tested on animals. Major product testers such as Gillette, Estee Lauder,
Revlon, Avon and Mary Kay no longer test their products on animals.

And on the fur issue, fur sales are in the toilet, designers are giving the
stuff away, their own spokesmodels don't even wear the stuff (Giselle), and
this year, we actually hosted a cruelty-free fashion show during fashion
week, another first!

A few weeks ago in a movie theatre in Melbourne a person sat on something
that was poking out of one of the seats. When she got up to see what it was
she found a needle sticking out of the seat with a note attached saying
"You have just been infected by HIV".

The Disease Control Centre in Melbourne reports many similar incidents have
occurred in many other Australian cities recently. All tested needles are
HIV Positive.

The Centre also reports that needles have been found in the cash dispensers
in ATMs. We ask everyone to use extreme caution when faced with this kind of
situation. All public chairs / seats should be inspected with vigilance and
caution before use.
Seventeen people have tested positive in the Western suburbs alone in the
last 2 months!!!

A careful visual inspection should be enough. In addition they ask that each
of you pass this message along to all members of your family and your
friends of the potential danger. We all have to be careful at public places!

This is very important. Just think about saving a life of someone even you
don't know by forwarding this message. Please, take a few seconds of your

IAKA/KAPS EMAIL UPDATE

1. Good news for Korean wildlife

2. Send letters to the Korean government before they legalize dog-meat!

3. 2 Sample letters to Korean President and Minister of Agriculture

4. The letter from the Olympic Committee

1. Good News for Korean Wildlife.

Korea is not just a country of dog and cat eating, but it has also been
systematically wiping out wildlife for “health food.” On December 30th,
2003 the Korean government passed a new wildlife protection law to banning
illegal hunting, trading and consumption of wildlife products in order to
counter this horrible practice.

The following are a few excerpts from news article:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

From January 2005, illegal poachers of wildlife and people eating wildlife
will be punished and the penalty will be up to one year of imprisonment or a
fine of up to 5000000 Korean won (about US$4170).

The Ministry of Environment announced that the National Assembly passed this
new law to protect wildlife and fauna. This law was created to eradicate
illegal poaching and trading of wildlife, and also to penalize the consumer
of food and other products of wildlife.

This law also bans the hunting of amphibians and reptiles (such as frogs and
snakes) which were not included in the 1993 wildlife protection law.
Animals added as protected endangered species will include: moon bear, water
deer, wild boar, pit vipers, yellowish brown snakes, badgers, and several
others.

Feral cats that have been responsible for disturbing the ecosystem will also
be classified as wildlife. It has been difficult to manage the feral cats as
they have been classified as pet animals by law. The law will make it easy
to take appropriate measures, including the capture of the feral cats.
However, stray cats in the city will continue to be treated as pet animals
by the Animal Protection Law.

2. **URGENT** Please send protest letters to Korean government as often
possible; please tell your friends to do the same!

For the past year, KAPS/IAKA and animal friends from around world have been
lobbying the Korean government to not adopt a draft law which would
recognize two classes of animal – pets and livestock. Dogs and cats would
not be excepted from their definition and would therefore be “raised” as
livestock for human consumption. KAPS has argued that dogs and cats need to
be a special category, recognizing their longstanding role as companion
animals, that could not be raised as livestock. Nevertheless, the Korean
government appears to be determined to adopt the new law and has set in
motion a process that could result in it being approves by the Korean
National Assembly in July 2004.

This, of course, is terrible news. If this law passes as planned, only dogs
and cats raised explicitly as pets will be protected. Not only does this
mean that dogs and cats raised for human consumption will have no protection
from abuse whatsoever but it also allows for any dog abuser to get away with
torturing these animals, legally, just as long as he claims the animal is
not a pet.

We are asking you to send as many protest letters as possible to Korean
President and the Ministry of Agriculture. This matter is most urgent, as
the Korean government has already set up a time-line for the introduction of
this new law: the law will be drafted and then sent to Korean Animal related
organizations for review in February 2004, before being passed on to
National Assembly. Please write protest letters in both email and regular
mail and encourage others to do so, too. (President Roh Moo-Hyun does not
have an email address. If you try emailing the Minister of Agriculture and
the message does not go through, please consider sending a letter through
the mail instead. AN .80¢ STAMP IS REQUIRED FOR LETTERS MAILED FROM THE
U.S. TO KOREA.)

Sample letter to President and the Minister of Agriculture:

Dear ,

I am appalled to learn the Korean Government is currently drafting an
amendment to the Animal Protection Law of 1991, making a distinction between
certain breeds of dogs as meat-producing livestock animals and other breeds
as pets. In the draft law, the definition of pet animal is an attempt to
give legitimacy to dog and cat meat. The dogs and cats are protected only
if people raised them purposely as pet animal. This means that any dog or
cat purposely raised for food will not be protected. Not only does this
deprive protection to animals who are raised for food or medicine but will
also result in a situation where the law cannot punish any animal abuser who
claims that their dog or cat was raised for any purposes other than pets.
In 1991 your own government acknowledged that all dogs, not just certain
breeds, were entitled to protection from cruelty, mistreatment, and abuse.
Any amendment leaving dogs and cats purposely bred for food or medicine
without protection would be a grave injustice and a major setback for the
animal protection efforts in Korea.

If this new law passes, it would make Korea the first and only country in
the entire world to explicitly legitimize dog meat, legally sanctioning dog
and cat killing for human consumption. This would bring a great mark of
shame to your country, especially when the overwhelming majority of the rest
of the world has banned dog-meat, including Taiwan, Thailand and the
Philippines. In fact, Taiwan has recently strengthened their law to ban the
killing and selling dogs as food. Almost every other country in the world,
especially those as developed as Korea, is moving forward with animal
protection laws. Why do you want to embarrass your country and let it be
known as the only country taking a step backwards?

Our boycott of Korea’s bid for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games was successful.
After choosing Vancouver, Canada, as the host city, the International
Olympic Committee sent letters to International Aid for Korean Animals and
The Korea Animal Protection Society asking them and their supporters to stop
bombarding their offices with protest cards. I promise that if the proposed
amendment to the Animal Protection Law of 1991 passes, we will do everything
in our power to se that Korea will loose all of its bids to host any major
event, including all international sporting events and World Expositions.
I, and my many animal loving friends from around world, will send protest
letter after protest letter informing the organizers of such events as to
the horrors that take place inside Korea, letting them know that they should
reconsider before choosing Korea as a host city.

All Dog and Cat are companion pet animals and should not be raised for human
consumption.

The following is the letter to IAKA/KAPS from the Olympic committee:

Dear Sir,

The International Olympic Committee regularly receives postcards and letters
from web users, inspired by your website www.koreananimals.org, asking us
not to award the 2010 Olympic Winter Games to the city of Pyeong-Chang,
South Korea.

We would like to inform you that, on 2 July 2003 in Prague, the IOC Session
elected the city of Vancouver, Canada, as the host city for the XXI Olympic
Winter Games in 2010.

We thank you for taking due note of this information.

Yours faithfully,

The International Olympic Committee

Sample Letter to Korean President or Minister of Agriculture

  Dear ,

I am deeply shocked and saddened that you still have not changed the
definition of “pet animals” in your proposed Amendment to the Animal
Protection Law. Specifically, I am very concerned about the following
clause:

Article 2, Clause 3: “The pet animals” are dogs and cats raised for the
purpose of companionship and developing an emotional attachment to humans
and other animals; as designated by the Minister of Agriculture.

As proposed by the Korean Animal Protection Society, the clause should be
changed to:

Article 2, Clause 3: “The pet animals includes all dogs and cats. Other
animals can be “the pet animals”, if raised for the purpose of companionship
and developing an emotional attachment to humans; as designated by the
Minister of Agriculture.

All dogs and cats are pet animals and should not be raised for human
consumption. Your proposed Amendment is nothing but an attempt to legalize
dog meat. If it goes forward as proposed, I promise that I will do
everything in my power to let the world know that your Amendment is a wolf
in sheep’s clothing. Korea will be seen as a backward, hypocritical nation,
pretending to protect animals while actually protecting the dog meat
business.

If you care about the future of Korea, you should make every effort to
eliminate the dog and cat meat industry. Defending dog eating, as a part of
Korea’s culture, only increases the damage to Korea’s image. What will Korea
look like in the world’s eyes when it is the first developed society to
legalize dog meat? Your decision to side with the dog meat industry is short
sighted and will cause Korea great harm. It is not too late to change your
mind.

Yours sincerely

Dear HCA Supporters,

In this update:
   a.. Public consultation on Xenotransplantation
   b.. Fundraiser dinner reminder
   c.. Graphic designer wanted.
Public consultation on Xenotransplantation
By now you may likely be aware that the National Health & Medical Research
Council (NHMRC) are conducting a second round of public consultation to
determine whether xenotransplantation research should be authorised in
Australia. A community guide and response paper are available from the NHMRC
website www.nhmrc.gov.au or by contacting the project officer at
ahec.nhmrc@... or by phone (02) 6289 9545. The closing date for
submissions is Friday 12 March 2004. HCA also has a small number of spare
copies available.

The NHMRC will also be conducting public consultation meetings around
Australia. This is your opportunity to ask questions and voice your concerns
in person about the cruelty and the risks involved in xenotransplantation.
Please note however that any questions must be precise and to the point as
the meetings will all be facilitated and it is likely that they may limit
the number of questions per person. Also note that whilst animal welfare may
be of great concern it is unlikely to be a deciding factor as to whether
xeno research will proceed. It may therefore be more productive to identify
yourself from whatever background you have - other than animal welfare - and
raise concerns about disease risk, containment, financial backing, failure
to persue alternatives etc.

The meetings will take place between 6-8pm at the following venues:

Brisbane: 9 February 2004, The Sebel Suites
Sydney: 10 February 2004, Hyde Park Plaza
Canberra: 11 February 2004, Hyatt Hotel
Perth: 16 February 2004, Hyatt Regency Perth
Adelaide: 17 February 2004, Stamford Plaza
Darwin: 18 February 2004, Novotel Atrium
Melbourne: 23 February 2004, Hotel Grand Chancellor
Hobart: 24 February 2004, Salamanca Inn

Please make an effort to write a submission and/or attend the public meeting
in your area to express strong opposition to xenotransplantation proceeding.

Fundraiser dinner reminder

Thousands of baby seals are cruelly wrenched from their mothers and are

PHEASANT CLUBBING DEFENDED

THE Queen last night hit back at animal rights campaigners who blasted her
for clubbing a pheasant to death.

She battered the bird four or five times with her walking stick after it was
winged at a shoot at Sandringham on Saturday It was one of her first public
appearances since knee surgery before Christmas.

A Buckingham Palace statement said: "The Queen acted quickly, as would any
responsible country sports person, to reduce the
suffering of the bird."

But John Bryant, spokesman for the campaign group Protect Our Wild Animals,
said: "It may be a mercy killing but euthanasia is not valid if you or your
family caused the maiming in the first place."

Animal Aid director Andrew Tyler said: "The fact that this is one of her
first appearances since her surgery demonstrates the Royal Family's horrible
addiction to bird killing.

"The way she apparently dispatched this bird is very messy and would have
been very painful for the pheasant."

But an estate worker said: "She did the most humane thing by killing an
injured bird as quickly as possible."

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, who have the Queen as patron,
said their royal charter "forbids us from getting involved in debate about
wildfowling and other legitimate sports".

Why don't you ask the British RSPCA why she is not being prosecuted for this
action and how they can, in view of this fact,
let her remain as their Patron!

Cambridge abandons plans for primate lab

Anti-vivisectionists claim victory as costs force university to scrap
project

Alok Jha, science correspondent
Wednesday January 28, 2004
The Guardian

Anti-vivisectionists declared victory yesterday as Cambridge University
announced that it had shelved plans to build a controversial multi-million
pound neuroscience laboratory. The university has denied any suggestion,
however, that it had yielded to pressure from animal rights extremists,
citing financial difficulties instead.
The projected cost of the laboratory has risen from £24m to £32m in the past
six years (including the cost of additional security to guard against
protesters) and, combined with a £9.2m deficit in the university's finances,
the university council decided to abandon the project at a meeting on
Monday.
In a statement issued yesterday, Tony Minson, the university's pro-vice
chancellor, said: "This has not been an easy decision to reach but
ultimately we have a responsibility to our students and staff not to take
financial risks of this magnitude, and we believe that although regrettable,
this is the right course of action."
The university had discussed its problems with funding agencies and the
government and reported that, though it had received words of support, it
had not been given extra cash to keep the project afloat. Professor Minson
conceded that he had not expected the government to simply underwrite the
project with a blank cheque, and that the university had come to live with
the inevitable in recent months.
Animal rights campaigners, who have opposed the project since it was
conceived in 1997, welcomed the announcement.
"Any decision to avoid the use of primates in experiments is to be
welcomed," said a statement by the RSPCA. "The biological similarity of
non-human primates to humans is the reason why they are used in research,
but this same similarity means that they are likely to have an awareness of
pain and distress that is similar to our own."
Medical researchers were concerned. "This is a serious blow for British
medical research," said Mark Matfield, director of the Research Defence
Society, a pro-animal research lobby. "These delays and security concerns
were caused by orchestrated threats and intimidation. The government needs
to bring in tougher legislation to tackle extremist campaigns. Otherwise
they will remain a threat to all medical science that depends on animal
research."
The proposed neuroscience laboratory at Cambridge has been at the centre of
controversy for six years. It was designed to pool all research conducted on
non-human primates at the university as well as to bring in new researchers.
Described as a centre of national importance, support came from the highest
echelons of government: Tony Blair publicly stated his support for the
laboratory at a speech to the Royal Society in 2002.
Scientists themselves argued that research on primates is the only option
for finding cures for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and
Alzheimer's disease, as well as the development of vaccines for malaria and
Aids. More specifically, primate brains are the only ones that have frontal
lobes similar to those of humans. These control the higher cognitive
functions and are only poorly developed in other animals.
"Primates are, of course, special, and we strive to minimise their use,"
said Colin Blakemore, chief executive of the Medical Research Council. "But
studies involving primates have been crucial for our understanding of brain
function, and have underpinned the development of brain scanning methods in
people."
Planning permission for the laboratory was rejected twice by South
Cambridgeshire district council on the grounds that protests by animal
rights campaigners outside the facility would snarl up traffic and could
become a nuisance to local residents. A subsequent public inquiry also
recommended that the primate lab should not be built on the grounds that it
was not of national importance. Last November, however, the deputy prime
minister, John Prescott, overruled the recommendations and granted the
university the required planning application.
The university had already secured the projected £24m cost from a mixture of
public and private sources. It argued that several factors had contributed
to a rise in costs of £8m since the start of the project: inflation;
heightened standards in Home Office regulations regarding the use of animals
in research; and extra security expenses. In addition, Prof Minson estimated
there would be £1m more required in annual running costs.
Not everyone believes Cambridge's story. "The university's claim that their
change of heart is due to spiralling security costs is plain nonsense," said
a representative of Animal Aid. "Both Cambridge and their supporters
asserted during the inquiry that security was not a problem, and security
did not feature in the planning inspector's report."

WPAA Special Report on Trophy and Canned Hunting, by Phillip Wollen

Trophy Hunting of crocodiles in the Northern Territory has been on the news
again this morning, with the NT claiming they have strong public support for
this "sport". Support for trophy hunting has also come from the NT croc
farms, no surprises there. When they shoot out the wild crocs, the farms
will want to sell tame crocs to shoot. Below is a special Report on the
issue of canned hunting, which looks likely to be introduced by stealth into
Australia. Pat OBrien.

Australian Crocodiles

Commercial Permits for Trophy Hunters

Dear Minister,

The Northern Territory Government is proposing to permit foreign tourists to
kill Australian crocodiles for hunting trophies. The vast publicity given to
crocodiles by Steve Irwin, the "Crocodile Hunter" in America, has put these
magnificent, pre-historic beasts squarely in the cross-hairs of the trophy
hunting industry. To the NT Government's

discredit, the economic benefits of this "industry" are being touted as
reason for allowing this horrific and medieval carnage.

I urge you not to allow this industry to start. Apart from the moral issues,
it is politically easier to stop it now than after it is in full swing.
Remember asbestos? Remember OK Tedi Gold and Copper in New Guinea?
Bouganville?

Killing any animal as a trophy is unethical. And this is the thin edge of
the wedge. What animals are next? Possums, wallabies, koalas? Why not?
Because koalas are cuddly and crocs are not? Please don't tell me it won't
happen. The overwhelming evidence is that once we have a hunting "industry"
it spreads like rampant cancer until there are few wild animals left.

Are you aware of the number of hunters who aspire to kill the "best
specimen" animal possible as a trophy - in every species on the planet?
Tiger, lion, rhino, polar, black and Asiatic bear, giraffe, apes, bison,
croc, hippo, red kangaroo. You name it. They want to kill it. And mount the
carcasses like gaudy baubles on their crass trophy walls.

Have you any idea how many intra - species animals they kill before they are
satisfied that the murdered animal is "big" enough or "attractive" enough to
grace their trophy walls? Just to satisfy their sick and fragile egos? Even
after killing many animals of the same species and being pleased with the
"size" of the head etc., do they stop? No – they continue, hoping that the
next bullet will find a marginally bigger animal that could replace the one
they shot previously. When finally assured that they indeed have killed a
truly awesome and unique creature without peer, they switch species and the
process begins anew. An African lion today, a polar bear tomorrow, an Aussie
croc the day after. . a veritable smorgasbord of murderous opportunities. (I
should point out that, in reality, the game guide rarely assures them that
"better" specimens are unlikely to be found. That would be bad for future
business. So they return, kill again, measure up the victim, curse under
their breath that it was not as big as the last one and start again.)

The upshot of all this is that a truly disgusting industry is born. Canned
hunting, where animals are bred for hunting under the smokescreen of
"sustainability", arguably the most highjacked word in the English language.
If whales could be bred in captive breeding farms (in the name of
"sustainability" of course) we would have a canned whale hunting industry
tomorrow. Aristotle Onasis bragged to his doe eyed women admirers on board
his yacht, the Christina, that the bar stools were made of whale scrotums.
Freud would have had a field day with this individual. In good taste, I
resist the myriad of jokes at Onasis' expense that immediately come to mind.

In my battles with other countries I have seen some ethically challenged
governments euphemistically camouflage the cruelty as a smokescreen to the
public. Their responses are a cynical, technically crafted sleight of hand
designed to do precisely that. . . to deceive, deflect and deny. There is
never any intention of stopping the cruelty. Just the criticism. This is not
the Australian way.

In South Africa alone for instance, tame lions, 2500 at last count, reared
from cubs, are caged, drugged and imprisoned in factory conditions. Namibia,
Ethiopia, Botswana, Kenya and many others do the same. A brave white hunter
with a cheque book is given a rifle, the terrified animal is released and
killed immediately. A video, photographs, and body parts are trophies
carried home, evidence of the "courage" of the killer. I am sure that this
is not your vision for Australia. But it could happen if the "industry" has
its’ way.

"If it pays, it stays" is the mantra of an anthropocentric, morally bankrupt
administration. Welcome to the brave new world of "canned hunting".

This is what every "trophy hunter" demands. . . A kill. Make absolutely no
mistake about it. Glossy sales brochures promoting the killing tour
guarantee a "kill". Failure to deliver a kill is financial suicide for the
"business". As a professional merchant banker I have more than a passing
knowledge about the dynamics of business. To guarantee a kill, you need
canned hunting. It is that simple. Period. Anyone who tells you otherwise is
a fool or a liar. The only way, I repeat, the only way, to avoid going broke
in the hunting industry is to have a ready supply of killable targets. And
that means a captive breeding program (= euphemism for canned hunting) to
satisfy even the most cock-eyed, uncoordinated, gun toting killer with
Parkinsons Disease and a cheque book.

I wrote an impassioned letter to three government ministers in South Africa.
Tame, hand reared, factory bred lions are drugged and released from pens to
be killed by "brave" hunters. Amongst other things, I offered to sell my
home in faraway Melbourne and donate the proceeds to the South African
government to be used in whatever form they chose to end this barbaric
cruelty. A million odd bucks from us would no doubt be multiplied many times
over by like-minded individuals around the world.

I explained that "canned hunting" was diametrically opposed to South
Africa's best interests. The financial cost would become even more stark if
there was a concerted campaign in the world press against South African
tourism, an industry which is fragile at the best of times. I stressed I did
not want to see economic carnage as a consequence of

trying to stop the carnage of another kind. I quoted Barbara Tuchman's
definition of folly: "when a nation acts against its own best interests".

In these terrifying, turbulent times, people are becoming more sensitive and
caring for our environment and all who share it. Guns, gratuitous bloodshed
and cruelty are the freakshows of the 21st Century. Decent people recoil in
horror at cruelty and ignorance. There are more people in this category
(thankfully) than those who visit the "killing fields" and use it as a safe
haven for the cheap thrills of their baser instincts. I could not imagine my
government allowing Australia to be cynically treated as a shooting gallery
by people whose disgusting conduct would not be tolerated in their own
lands. They are as sure as apples not going to do it in mine.

I told the South African ministers that their most precious and loved
citizens are their wild animals (rivalling the Springboks and, at a stretch,
their cricketers). What a powerful message it would send the world if the
government could announce with great fanfare that "canned hunting" was
banned in South Africa. Honourable people like Tiger Woods,

Ernie Els, the Chappell brothers, Steve Waugh, Alan Border, Robert Redford
and Meryl Streep (Out of Africa) would outdoubtedly "front" the campaign
with great joy. The boost to the tourism industry would be massive. The
positive effect on world opinion would be profound. Visitor numbers,
national pride, and economic growth would go through the roof. Everybody
wins.

I also admitted that I had to be brutally honest with myself as well. If I
was not part of the solution then I was part of the problem. That is why I
offered my family home - not just my moral indignation. I warned them in the
gentlest terms that the world is going to be massively indignant when this
atrocity hits the front pages of every newspaper across the globe.

I cherish Australia's reputation as a decent, caring country. I am sensitive
that this reputation is vulnerable at this time. Particularly, as the Aussie
"Crocodile Hunter" is on the front page of American newspapers. If these
killing permits are granted, the NT Government will receive the backlash it
deserves. No doubt it will whine and blame Canberra for it's woes, real or
imagined. Then it would be too late to put the genie back in the bottle. Our
nation and its people would be the losers.

I honestly thought that the South Africans would respond to my offer. I was
profoundly wrong. The culture of cruelty is too deep to be cleansed easily.
They cannot budge from the ingrained institutionalised cruelty because it is
profitable. If it pays, it stays. Indeed. Ethics is unfamiliar terrain and
South Africans are not adventurous. I could never for a

moment think the same would be true for my beloved country.

I laid the facts of commercial cruelty plainly out for them: Kimberley
Nature "Conservation" officials permit the capture of wild baboons for
deplorable and unethical experiments at Potch University; profiteering from
ivory sales by killing untold numbers of elephants; factory farming of large
predators (2500 caged lions alone) to supply the canned hunting industry
with a constant supply of drugged and caged living targets; the turning out
of hand reared, tame lions into camps where they are set upon by dogs and
then killed by bow and arrow; permitting of 'traditional hunting' by dogs,
the vicious slaughter of animals by the tens of thousands annually in the
name of "problem animal" control; the butchering of Cape Fur Seals,
permitting of "trophy" hunting in game reserves. A juvenile bull elephant,
blood streaming down the eyes and

ears, pursued in a helicopter was watched by horrified British tourists on a
game drive.

My letter and offer achieved nothing. The silence was deafening. I felt
utterly powerless. This, it pains me to say, is from the land that gave us
Nelson Mandela. In obiter, I note that there appears to be a softening in
the stand adopted by the South African administration in recent weeks. But
perhaps it is wishful thinking on my part, or as Samuel Johnson said "a
triumph of optimism over experience." Time will tell.

In the business world, a company succeeds over the long run not just by
having good products, advertising, distribution channels and capital. These
qualities are transitory. Ultimately, new competitors, products, tastes,
fashions and markets emerge. The old order is replaced by the new. Corporate
Darwinism at it's best. What ensures that a company

succeeds over all these business cycles is the quality of it's culture . . .
Openness, willingness (indeed eagerness) to adapt to change, hunger for
moral excellence, and the unshakeable commitment to leadership, not just
next quarter's profits. Sustainable growth is a consequence of this sine qua
non.

The same is true in matters of government. Moral and ethical policies are
not a means to an end. They are an end in themselves. The institutionalised
culture of cruelty to innocent non-human animals will ultimately affect
every aspect of civic life in any and every country the allows cruelty to
persist on it's watch.

I was astounded by the stupidity of the pro hunting arguments. But, as
Montgomery said of Rommel during the desert campaign in WW 11, "When my
adversary is making a strategic blunder, I think it would be rude of me to
interrupt him."

The Times in London (9/8/03) quoted Wouter van Hoven, a professor of
wildlife management at Pretoria University, an apologist for the hunting
lobby. I can only hope that he, as a respected academic, was misquoted.
"Around 75 per cent of the income of private game reserves comes from
hunting." The implication is that hunting in game reserves is therefore
acceptable. So, 75% of the tourism income relates to hunting, and 25% to
photographic tours. If this was their artillery, they just fired a blank. If
this justification was not so financially ignorant (and morally bankrupt) I
would have collapsed in uncontrollable laughter and had to be carried away
in high hysteria on the tea trolley! On this basis, IBM would still be
making time clocks, every aviation company in the world would be building
turbo prop engines, Edison would be hand-rearing carrier pigeons and black
slavery would be a profitable business listed on the New York Stock
Exchange.

The professor goes on "Sustainable hunting allows locals as well as the game
reserves to benefit financially from hunting." That may be so, but you don't
need to be a professor to grasp a BGO - a blinding glimpse of the obvious.
The locals do derive some economic benefit. But at what cost? How much
greater benefit would they derive by banning the

sordid practice instead?

Patpong in Bangkok is most notorious red-light strip of brothels in the
world. And indeed, the local community also "benefits financially" from the
trade in these seedy establishments. What a wonderful industry to promote.
To all you red-blooded males out there, try an experiment. Tell your mates
you are going to Bangkok for a week on your own. Look

out for the locker room, nudge nudge wink wink responses you get from your
buddies. How often do we hear about the rich culture, the food, the
fascinating history, the graceful and welcoming people? Small wonder the
Thais detest the image.

Has the professor suggested a similar initiative for the "locals" for whom
he has such great concern? Perhaps a government subsidy could kick start a
new industry in the world's oldest profession for South Africa? Feeling
randy, mister? Only 200 rand.

Digging a bigger hole he says "because of hunting, we now have more wildlife
in South Africa than we had a hundred years ago." No professor, you don't.
That is a lie. But you do have more caged live targets waiting in fear and
dread to be inevitably murdered. And, by the way, in your twisted logic, you
are half right. Because of prostitution and crime,

PatPong has more Toyotas than it did a hundred years ago. I guess that by
your amoral standards that makes it acceptable. It must be. The Safari Club
of the US is your biggest customer and its most famous member is General
‘Stormin’ Norman Schwarzskopf. It must be safer than killing Iraqi soldiers,
I guess. The terrified animals can't shoot back.

The professor goes on "There are many people who still dream about killing a
lion in Africa." He is half right about that too. But I call these
nightmares and wake up screaming as a result.

His coup de grace? "Canned hunting must be stopped because it violates the
principles of the fair chase." On the first part of his assertion we agree.
Canned hunting must be stopped. But not for the reason he suggests. It must
be stopped because it is morally and ethically wrong. Was it Shelley (?) who
said "Ah, but there lies the subtlest treason; to do all the right things,
for all the wrong reasons."

And to use the word "fair" in the same sentence utterly beggars the English
language. Does he realise that this is the language of Milton, Shakespeare
and the Book of Common Prayer? Fairness? What is "fair" about it or is it a
sick joke? It will be fair when the lions decide to organise a weekend jaunt
for their own amusement, climb into Land Rovers, armed to the teeth, herd a
bunch of hand reared humans into the local playground, and systematically
kill them as they cower behind the slippery slides and swings. Now that
sounds fairer.

To dress it up in the name of "sport" is an insult to sportsmen the world
over. I am a sportsman and I am deeply offended to categorised with these
people. You already know that Australian's are renowned for their
sportsmanship. What sport predetermines the victor? What sport guarantees
that the "vanquished" will die in agony and terror? What sport has only one
willing, well armed participant? A true sportsman could not contemplate such
an act of barbarism in his worst nightmare. Even the clown Prince Harry got
into the act. On his recent trip to Africa he speared a miniature dhik dhik
to death to prove his manhood. Sorry prince, a dead dhik dhik doesn't make
you a man, it makes you impotent. Pun intended. And we don't have tiny
antelopes in the Australian outback for you to kill while you enjoy our
hospitality. Would a joey suffice?

If the "hunt," the "kill", and "fairness" are so attractive, then I have the
perfect solution. Arm all these brave hunters with weapons of their choice,
chauffeur them into the bush, and let them hunt . . . . . each other. With
live ammunition. It should be the ultimate thrill for these so-called
"sportsmen". The hunt will be exciting, it will be fair, it will be
voluntary and it will be profitable. What can be fairer than that? Heck, you
could even turn it into a spectator sport. Sell tickets, people could bet on
the outcomes, sell the television rights to Rupert Murdoch. Get Jerry
Springer to host the show. The more grotesque the better. Eureka, this new
business could be cash flow positive and profitable from day one! Even Alan
Bond could run a profitable business when the raw material input costs are
zero.

It all boils down to culture. . . . corporate and civic. I respectfully ask
our government to have the courage to be different. Others governments may
foster cultures that believe that life (of others) is a disposable resource,
to be exploited for profit or pleasure, preferably both. That it appeals to
the baser instincts of the few is not a moral issue. It is a market niche.
Any contrary view is immediately and derisively dismissed as "radical,
extremist or bunny hugging". If my tongue in cheek suggestion that they hunt
each other is radical, then it will be the first time in my miserable,
conservative life that I have been described thus.

There is a price to pay for every action we take. Unfortunately, those
paying the price today are the innocent animals. Those paying the price
tomorrow will be innocent citizens who will inherit the pariah states being
built today.

I was sent to work in The Philippines in the early 80's. At the Manila
airport carousel, waiting for my luggage to arrive I chatted to a middle
aged, rather scruffy, overweight, man from Milwaukee. Learning it was my
first time he proudly told me that he visited for two weeks every year.
Incorrectly assuming I was there for a similar purpose, he said "This place
is heaven on earth. Where else could I have a dozen gorgeous young girls by
snapping my fingers". During the cab ride to downtown Makati I pondered how
I would feel if my own country's reputation was based on tawdry sex trade
offered in abundance to its visitors. Not an edifying thought. In the
sweltering Manila heat, fair dinkum, my blood ran cold.

Would decent Australians like our country to be visited (short stay, quick
and dirty) by foreigners whose sole purpose is to commit grossly inhumane
acts that they could not even contemplate in their own countries? Would they
like to be seen as hosting brutal freak shows for money? Is any country so
financially impoverished and so morally bankrupt that it is actually being
advertised? Imagine American tourists killing Indian Brahmin cows in Jaipur
or white elephants in Thailand. They would not leave the country alive.
Could the day ever dawn when Australia, like South Africa, will actually
promote it's killing fields? For my own part, it is unthinkable.
Institutionalising the killing of it's fellow sentient beings is not part of
the Australian psyche. National pride, humanity, common decency . . . quo
vadis.

The loss of a good reputation does not happen overnight. It creeps up on you
and suddenly one day you realise that your country smells of decaying flesh
in the nostrils of the international community. By then it is too late. I
use an analogy with great reluctance and with no wish to offend or be
insensitive. A frog will sit still in a saucepan on a stove as

the water becomes progressively hotter, getting used to the rising
temperature until it boils to death. The frog could quite easily hop out
early and escape it's fate. But it gets accustomed to the rising temperature
stays. Death comes slowly, but inexorably. Like the guy who jumps from the
roof of a high rise building, calling out to horrified viewers as he

plummets past each window "No worries. I'm all right so far". Splat.

But it is not too late. Australia needs statesmen (and women) who lead the
nation. And we have them. We need beacons of hope.

Donald Horne wrote that Australia was "The Lucky Country". Prime Minister
Hawke urged us to become "The Clever Country." I would us to be known as
"The Compassionate Country".

Could someone please tell me with a straight face that killing defenceless
innocent animals by trophy hunters is moral, decent or fair. . . Please.

If time permits, perhaps someone could also explain to me why it should also
be public policy.

I will fly up to Darwin to hear an official say it to my face. It won't take
long. I promise. Ten minutes. Tops. About the same time it takes for a
sentient, living being to die.

These are my sincere thoughts for what they are worth. I think trophy
hunting is unethical and un-Australian. Please tell me that I am wrong.

Then perhaps the nightmares will stop.

For me anyway.

HI Lawrence,
I appreciate the time you took to talk with this employee and to leave a
note in the suggeston box.
Obviously the KIAA (kangaroo industry) put out blurbs about clean green save
the environment etc all by killing kangaroos.
They even took VIVA to the British Advertising standards Council in London,
backed by the Federal Gobernment High Commissioner who is fed the
information, VIVA has been forced to stop disseminating material. THey have
just been granted yet another subsidy to the tune of $230,000.00 a year to
puch the kangaroo meat industry in Australia.
This is only the tip of the iceberg.
I will forward this to all our people but the ONE issue they cannot address
is the cruelty to kangaroos and theri joeys which is why we challenged Dr
DAvid Kemp in the AAT for signing the WA QLd and SA Kagnaroo Kill programs.
Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Maryland,

Piedmontes supermarket in Nth Fitzroy (Nicholson st) is selling kangaroo
meat for human consumption. I expressed my concern to a staff member and
asked him to convey this to the manager. The staff member thought that
"apparently they've had to bring in the military to shoot roos there's that
many of them...". This poor fellow had obviously bought the industry's line
completely. I put it to him that on both counts he had been misled. At which
point he informed me that the roo meat was now their biggest seller
outstripping even beef. I find this hard to believe, however his enthusiasim
for the commercial aspects of the product was quite genuine.

I left a note in their suggetion box asking them to stop selling roo meat.

DUCK SEASON 2004
Thank you to all the thousands who helped to push for a permanent ban on
recreational duck shooting in Victoria and especially Laurie Levy who has
campaigned tirelessly to save native waterbirds for the last 18 years.
Because Labor controls both Houses in Victoria we felt there was a chance,
but Mr Bracks Labor government has let down the 70% of Victorians who want a
permanent ban (A.C.Neilsen poll, Feb. '03). The government has disregarded
the recommendation of ornithologists and scientists and pampered to an
aggressive minority who get their kicks from killing innocent birds. They
will be responsible for the unnecessary killing and wounding of beautiful
native birds - simply for fun. The government doesn't value native
waterbirds, but members of the Coalition Against Duck Shooting (CADS) do and
we'll be out there again doing our best to distract shooters, save native
birds and assist the wounded.

On behalf of the innocent birds - we will soldier on. Unfortunately they
still desperately need your help. If you can attend the Victorian duck
opening on March 20th please contact Lyn on 03 53315508 or 0414 816 509 or
come to the CADS planning meetings in the ALV office (394 Russell Street,
Melbourne 3000). Please circulate this message.

Coalition Against Duck Shooting meeting dates (all meetings to be held at
the ALV office)
March 3, 2004 7-10pm
March 10, 2004 7-10pm
March 19, 2004 will leave Melbourne at 9 pm.

KFC AND RODEO PROTEST

ALV have conducted over 30 successful KFC Cruelty protests since July last
year. This Saturday, February 7, members of ALV are going up to Geelong to
support the Geelong Animal Advocates KFC Cruelty demonstration from 1-2pm.
If you would like to come along or need a ride please contact the ALV office
on 9639 3993. (The regular 37 Swanston Street KFC Cruelty protest will still
be happening from 1-2 for those unable to make it to Geelong).

Following the KFC protest in Geelong ALV members are going to Ballarat to
protest the rodeo which starts at 4pm. Volunteers are needed to help patrol
for breaches of the Code of Practice and other activities. For more
information on the rodeo protest please contact Lyn on 03 5331 5508 or 0414

LOVING HOMES SOUGHT

1. If any of our members/supporters know of and/or able to help home/agist
four cows and four steers please email Patty on patty@... or call the
office on 9639 3993. These are the animals mentioned in the most recent ALV
newsletter who were rescued by Christine Gall. Christine is no longer able
to look after them, the drought hit hard and ALV will be fostering these
animals. Their names are: Maddy, who turned one last December, Babymoo (the
daughter of mummy moo and her 7 month old daughter Angel, Buddy who is about
10 months old and needs to be desexed and then four steers named Santi,
Whitey, Sunshine and Ziggy.

2. A couple of female companion rabbits, approximately 7 months old (neither
is desexed) require a loving home with a large enclosure (not for a
farm/breeding) where they can live in peace and quiet without being handled
too much (especially by children). They are both friendly, but cannot be
enclosed in a big enclosure in their current location. If you can help
please contact Kirsten on 0419 815 403

3. Home urgently needed for 3 male and 2 female cats around 2 years of age.

ANIMAL TESTING SURVEY

The following survey is very short and will only take a minute or so to
complete. The results will help to increase the sales of laundry products
that don't test on animals and are more environmentally friendly. Please
send any completed surveys to: info@...

The survey:
- Could you tell me what brand of Laundry powder or liquid you buy, and why
you buy that brand?
- Also, do you read or believe the blurb on the packets that say they are
'environmentally friendly' or 'not tested on animals' or 'cleans whiter than
other brands'?
- Also, do you change brands from time to time or always buy the same
product?

Hello Christine,

My name is Angelita and Astrid passed me your email address.

The reason for this email is to ask for your assistance. I need to find a
good home for my two Cattle X Kelpie dogs. They are both females (mother and
daughter), vaccinated; house trained, wormed, fled, red 2.5yrs and blue
9mths old and great with children & people. They love to play and Chiquita
(Cheeky) loves playing with water both from hose and on the beach. Chiquita
also like to bring you mice as a gift to you. Lucky, the mother, loves
playing chasing toys and bringing them back and also to chase the water
coming from the hose. Need 6" high fence or acreage and preferably together
and with visitation rights J please, at least every 4-6 months (less if
possible).

The reason for me to give them away is that my yard doesn’t have a 6” high
fence so the dogs keep jumping off the fence. Occasionally they would chase
the ride-on next-door. They normally come when called, but one of the
neighbours complaint to the Council about them. Now is either make the fence
higher –and I would but have no money for that and I am renting and the
fence is long- or find a good home for them before the 3rd March.

I would be happy if I was able to get them back later on, but this might
take a while as I signed another year contract (before I found out about
this situation). Even then, I am not sure if I could find a place where I
could have them (most rental houses are no pets). But it is thought. If you
feel that wouldn’t be possible, that would be okay as well; so long they are
in good homes and hopefully together.

I would really appreciate your help,

My home phone number is 07 3388 5799;

My address is: 1 Prescot Street, Waterford West, 4133.

Thank you again,

Angelita Mello
