Hi all well my shorty is back out 1 workshop this
week haveing had a full rewire and dual batteries
fitted and more but next week spends another 3 days in a
workshop to have all those annoying cruiser leaks fixed
and to have the old girl spruced up a bit well that's
all for now
Mornin 55 owner. To fit disc brakes to the front
of my 40 I just fitted all the 75 series gear onto
the original 40 housing. By doing this I didnt have
to go through the pain of cutting off the spring
mounts and rewelding them on to suit the correct width.
I fitted a 75 series LSD and axles as well. The
only mods I had to do was to die grind out the inside
of the knuckle slightly as the 75 CVs are slightly
bigger. I fitted all the standard 75 steering rods and
coupled it to an 80 series power steering box and
modified steering column. Drives like a dream now. Contact
me if you would like some extra info. Some photos
are listed on this site
G'day all! Just trying to get some info on disc brake conversions for a 78model
FJ55, I've heard that the 75 series front end fits. Any info would be much
appreciated!
The Red Rocket has come up trumps it looks
great...I have not been online in ages because I am
currantly travelling around australia signwriting when Im
on my way through there I would love to come and
have a look at the Rocket I will be posting more
photos of my shorty on the web soon as well as my
mates/boss's troop carrier we have been makeing some mods
recently and things are looking good .....
The "Red Rocket" as my kids call it is on the
road at last.(4 years in the making) The photos are a
bit lame as it hasnt had any serious outings yet. I
have come across a couple of small problems which is
to be expected. I had to put a new clutch master
cylinder kit in. The sump is leaking oil which Ill have to
fix. Bloody fuel gauge doesnt work. Im going to put an
aftermarket job in. Probably VDO. It goes as good as it looks
and better than I could have imagined. The only
problem is that it is so light due to the fibreglass body
that the back wheels lock up under compression when
you back off in a hurry. Could be fun in the rain.
The power steering mods and front end mods I have
done make it drive as well as my VT commodore. No more
wondering or heavy steering. 4wheel discs pull it up on a
dime. Ill hopefully have some maiden voyage photos
later. Thereare not to many hard core tracks around.
Just alot of sand dunes. To any of you guys thinking
of spending the amount of time and effort I have,
Its all worth it in the end
I dont know about anybody else but we havent had
a day below 40 degrees for weeks now. To make
matters worse the Desalination plant that produces our
water has been having problems with the cooling towers
and because our town dam is covered but in the direct
sunlight the COLD water temperature is 38 degrees. This
means you can only have a HOT shower after a long hot
day. Its even to hot to go driving as the temp in the
sun is well over 50 degrees. I have been braving the
heat in my shed and getting the beast closer to being
finished. Im going to have to get airconditioning in the
shed I think. I can actually drive the beast now but
still need a few things made up like front bumper,
flares and finish some wiring and instal the seat belts
etc. Got to go and find a cool place to relax
A quick email to 4x4 spares did the trick. Price
was good to. Thanks for the help. Ill have to order
it today and get it on the way. Has anyone had any
experience with suspension mods on a rig with a fibreglass
body? I have an Ultimate suspension kit but with the
fibreglass body it is to stiff due to the weight reduction.
Ive just finished making a complete new wiring loom
and should have the beast mobile soon
Hi look I know I am in Queensland but if you are
desperate I know a place where you will get one guarnteed
and they ship any where in australia and the world it
is a 4x4 spares they have a huge range of toyota
spares I use them for almost everything that breaks on
my FJ40 he he he......
Go to this web site and
email them with your
request:-www.4x4parts.com.au/index.htm
I need a headlight surround for My FJ40. It has
to be off one after 1975, which has square ends
instead of round. I was able to get on in Adelaide but
after having it chromed it was damaged in transit. I
hunted all over Adeliade for one good enough to chrome
and havent been able to get another on with out
buying the full front panel. If anyone knows the
whereabouts of a straight undamaged one let me
know

Thanks and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Hi to everyone just a quick note wishing you all a very safe and merry christmas
and I look foward to chating to you all again soon.
Thanks
From Robert
Hi all no need to respond to the tyre question I
could not be buggered stuffing around so I just went
attatched to my loan another $1000+ for a set of BFG
33x12.5 I will have them fitted next week sometime when I
have a photo I will post it I reckon it will look
pretty mean oh thanks for the tip about drilling a hole
in the fuel cap as it has worked a treat
............
I need to know if Hankook tyres are much good and
what tyres are everyone else using ultimatly I would
love a set of 33x12.5 BFG A/T but they are out of my
price bracket at the moment so I am after a cheapier
alternative that still have some performace qualitys for now
......There is always a comprimise......Thanks
I have the same problem with my fj55 but I have
an overflow that blocks up,a piece off coathanger
wire soon fixes the problem except after a long run.My
cruiser runs like shit on a long run, 400 km and over
unless I run it on unleaded. On unleaded I get no
pressure build up in the tank.
I had exactly the same problem a few years ago
with my FJ40. Due to the high temps here in summer, 40
- 45 degrees, the pressure was building up so high
that the needle and seat were unable to hold back the
pressure and the fuel was forced into the carby and out
the fuel bowel overflow which on a Holley is in the
middle, and down the carby throat and into the cylinders of
the motor. When I went to start the car it felt like
I had a flat battery due to the motor trying to
pressurise the fuel in the cylinder as the piston came up.
The result was a sump full of fuel which eventually
proved fatal for the motor due to more fuel than oil in
the sump. It only happened twice but was enough to
destroy the motor.

To rectify the problem I
purchased an after market fuel cap with a breather on it,
only to find it only worked in the other direction,
when the tank was cooling and trying to suck air in. I
drilled a 1/32 hole in the breather section on the inside
of the cap to allow air to pass the other way and
have not had a problem since. If the cruiser is
running rough it is quite possible that it is flooding
due to the extra pressure. Check your oil as well.
Hope this helps
I am not the most mech minded person there is so
I need a little help on my FJ40 I have a terrible
amount of back pressure in my fuel tank to the point
where when you take the fuel cap of in near blows you
into space and I am a little worried it must also be
causing my 4x4 to run terrible.....so basically where do
start looking for the problem?.

Thanks
The answer to all your grief lies in the
following words. "350 CHEV".
When do you start your
rebuild on the Beast? If you are contemplating an engine
change I can recommend an engine builder. Wayne Dempsey
from Wayne Dempsey Racing. This guy is so fussy about
his work it is sometimes painful but I have one of
his motors in my rig and it is soooo sweet and runs
so smooth it was worth the wait. He builds a lot of
engines and transmissions for the guys that race dirt
circuit at Roxby. Three of his motors are in cars that
currently hold SA 1 plates.
my cruisers off the road some previous owner burred the bolts on the water
pump.almost impossible to get them out, it took 3 hours.
now the rear engine
seal has let go, damn!
I have 33 x 12.5 BFG on 15 x 8 chrome rims with
from memory about 85 - 90mm offset inside, on my
machine. The tyres hang outside the body about 50mm but a
set of flares covers them well. I have Ultimate
suppension which lifts the body about 40mm and I have had to
cut out the body as much as the flare allows. Ill
have to get a digital camera and post a photo.
Hey how are you sounds like you have a nice rig
did you put a lot of thought into wheel travel
etc....? and what have you done to improve your 4x4 also
if you have a photo post it into the album with mine
I would love to see it
Thanks Robert
I have an FJ40 SWB with a 327 Chev and 4 speed
fitted. Im currently at the end of a long winded
reconstruction. It started as a quick respray 4 years ago. The
Red Rocket as my kids call it now has full fibre
glass body, 4 wheel disc brakes, power steering, custom
steering column, full roll cage, motor rebuild - balanced
and blue printed, roller rockers, flowed heads, mild
camshaft, twin point dizzy etc.,and a Dicky seat for the
kids in the back. If I knew how much time and money it
was going to take I would have probably had second
thoughts but it should be well worth it when finished.
Anyone wishing to find out what "not to do" when taking
on a similar project feel free to contact me
Hi all ,

If anyone has any idea I need to know how hard it is to put a
set of 33 x 12.5 tyres on the 1980 FJ40 do you have to cut the rear guards out
to make them fit....

Thanks
Hi all,
I have a 1980 SWB FJ40 I have only
owned it about 2 months and have put a front locker in
it as well as a clutch fan to reduce noise and a
list of other stuff but last weekend I went to
Landcruiser Mountain Park & the first track I did I blew a
rear diff luckily I kept the old gears from the front
so it was minimal cost.....oh the joys of the
beast......seeya
We're back again after shifting interstate, and
we will try to keep up to date with things.
Very
shortly we have to change the clutch, has anybody got any
hints? Never done one in the cruiser before. Any help
would be appreciated.
Sorry for not getting back to you. We've been off
the net for a few weeks shifting to a new home. We
are now in Darwin. Finally. And up and running again.
Unfortunately having problems with the cruiser, but we'll get
them fixed in the next month or so. Then we'll see
about doing some more 4wd work. Then we'll put some
more photos in.
