Filthy's will probably be busy from about 6pm, as it's a non-PS pay
week and it's usually busier then. Same with Little Brussels (aka the
Belgian Beer Cafe).

Green Square is as good a meeting place as any on a sunny Friday arvo.
Hopefully I'll make it - depends on how tired my visitors are.

I checked last week and all the coffee places are closed by 4pm.

So that leaves - restaurants, Filthy McFaddens (is it likely to be
crowded and busy on a Friday night? - maybe not until later) and the
Belgian Beer Pub - I don't know anything about their prices.

A few other pubs as well.

What if we meet on a seat in Green Square and decide from there?

I can make it Friday. I know nothing of venues in
Kingston (apart from the Black Swan cafe and it
probably isn't there anymore) - where are we meeting?

Thanks everyone - yeah, Wiley has only relatively recently entered the puzzle book market. I was asked to be Technical Reviewer on an upcoming title earlier this year (Brain Games for Dummies), and this has led to a book of my own (which they asked me to write)! Very exciting times (if terribly busy)!

Hope your get-together goes well this Friday, sorry I can't make it.

Cheers,

Denise

Congratulations Nisi - that's terrific news! Good luck with that
deadline.

Skyring - I guess we'd better make it a meet up this week then if
we're going to catch you! My sister and her son will be visiting next
weekend (arriving Friday) and I'm sure she'd like to meet some local
BCers as there aren't many in her neck of the woods.

Can people make either a Friday afternoon (say 530pm to allow people
to get away from work) or Saturday morning about 930am at Kingston or
Manuka? If we can get a consensus on time and venue I'll try to make
a booking so we have somewhere to sit.

I'll be absent for the next 4 months, as I've just signed a book contract with Wiley to write a massive puzzle book in the 'For Dummies' series (!!!!!) ... and the deadline is pretty horrendous. My first ISBN of my very own!

Yes the Belgian Beer place in Jardine St opposite Green Square. I
haven't been there, always think it looks nice.

Would be great to catch up before you head for Charleston Pete.

Yess, welcome to Canberra. Plenty of good bookshops. Book Lore in
Lyneham is an excellent used bookshop, and Paperchain in Manuka the
pick of the independents. Some good used bookshops in Fyshwick, but
beware of the academic remainders warehouse in Fyshwick. That's a good
place to get sucked into for a couple of hours - it's kind of a black
hole vortex in there where time and space have no meaning - and if you
can find your way out you've got a trolley load of books you simply
had to have. Steer clear of this one, it's dangerous. it's in Kembla
Street.

Lifeline Spring Bookfair is coming up. That's a weekend starting on
Friday. Another huge shed full of books and at the end they sell you a
bag full of what's left for ten dollars a pop.

Happy to attend a BC get together. We've been kind of slack. I'm off
to the Charleston BC thing in mid October, so sometime before then
would be nice. I can take slender volumes with me to pass on.

That's the Belgian Beer Cafe in Kingston?

Hi Chriss,

Everyone seems to have gone a bit quiet. I hope we can get together
sometime soon.

I was wondering about Little Brussels in Kingston.

Anyone?

Hello everyone. I was really delighted to see that Canberra has its own
BC group. I'm 'out of town' so things can get a bit isolated - no book
clubs here (yet!!...) although we are spoiled for book shops. I'm
looking forward to meeting you all at a meeting some time. Anything
decided on the new location? chriss

Starbucks is already closed. There were not many, if
any books there on the last day.

The only opinion I have about a venue is that it is
central, easily got to by bus and open at least some
evenings.

I'm not up to negotiating OBCZs at the moment but will
support any new ones if I can.

Has anyone been into Starbucks to see if our books are still there?
And do we know the closure date?

I have bellydance in town on Wednesday night and would be happy to poke
around if no one has been in recently. I'd hate our books to get
thrown away in the pack up - I'll see what I can rescue for
redistribution :)

Re alternatives, where is Cafe Essen? It rings a bell but I can't
recall the venue.

Artoven in Manuka is a good choice for me, though we'd need to pick a
quiet time as indoors is not very big and we do have a tendency to
spread out :) Pete, do you have a contact that you could speak to
about using this venue?

How do people feel about a more 'grown up' venue - Filthy McFadden's in
Green Square in Kingston is a cosy, central venue and they have board
games etc available so they're not averse to encouraging people to kick
back and relax. They also have an area with couches that is quite
comfy. I'm sure they'd be happy to have us hang out early in the week
when things aren't as busy (eg our usual Monday) - I don't mind
approaching them about being a BCOZ if people are interested in this
idea.

Hi Melanie,

Very sad about Starbucks. I wonder what happened to the books, if
there were still some there?

I don't have any suggestions for a venue, but any weeknight except
Wednesday or Thursday would be good for me.

Lyn.

I guess we need to start thinking about a new location... Any
suggestions?

Perhaps it would be a good time to run another poll on when to have
our meetings too.

I was in Civic Starbucks this week dropping off some books and the
bookshelf was gone! Replaced with a narrow wire rack which was doing
the books no good at all.
Hope the good people at Starbucks can be prevailed upon to replace the
bookshelf, or at least put in place a good sized cane basket as they
have elsewhere in the store for merchandise and coffee grounds.

We're staying three nights in Shrewsbury with Mr & Mrs F-B, who are are sweetness personified. I'm hoping to meet some of the BBC folk again, but I'm sure to see JimOnTheRadio in London, where he is giving a presentation at the Convention.

I'm also hoping to release a book every day, including themed releases aboard ship.

I'm off travelling again in a few days time. Much as I love
taxidriving - and with my new iPod Touch perched above the dashboard
playing music videos, I'm rapidly becoming legendary as the ABBA
Cabbie - driving twelve hours a night, five nights a week isn't the
most restful of occupations.

However, part of the reason I chose cabbing as a job is that I can take
time off whenever I want, and I'm taking two months off to take Kerri
travelling, finishing off at the London BC convention in April.

Off to Hong Kong on Saturday, four nights there before we board our
cruise ship (P&O Aurora) to Southampton via the Suez. Then we travel
around France and England, essentially retracing my steps of 2006, this
time more leisurely with wife.

And then I get home and work like a dog for a year to pay off the
plastic.

Ain't life grand?
