Re: The MCCofNSW need some thinkers!
I totally agree with Tara, Fleur, Hayden and Mathew. This is an
inadequate, amateur and poorly conducted work, and it lacks of
critical perspective on its analysis and it lacks of justification
and scientific references to support their statements and opinion
to "harmful noises" which may be contributing to noise pollution.
Other major problems to this peace of work are:
1. This survey is built on the imaginary concept that (all and any)
noise is harmful to the society.
2. It lacks of evidence on the amount of decibels the interviewed
people are exposed to prior to defining them as "annoying". What are
the intentions/justifications in classifying noises on the brackets
of its "awareness"? Is it to identify who is deaf or not? Or is it
to identify whether the noise is contributing to people's misery?
What assumptions are being made here?
3. The writer presents few options to noise-makers to those
interviewed; instead of leaving the questionnaire open to people
point to their `real' noise problems.
In my opinion the noises of kids screaming is more annoying than the
noise of motorcycles, yet, that does not mean that I won't tolerate
it.
The noise of the airplanes passing over my house at early hours in
the morning and late hours in the evening is to me more annoying
than the noise of my neighbor's law-mower, dirt bikes, Harleys, yet,
that does not necessarily mean that it's harmful to my health.
The wakening and disturbing noise of ambulances at the middle of the
night or early hours in the morning is not of the government's or
the patient's interest, and guess what? It is not even mentioned on
the survey. Why?
The fire-works used on our major events have the power to instigate
great fear and panic to my and everybody else's dogs, birds, fish,
however, do anyone wants to live life without the beauty and
emotions we all rejoice from them?
What about the noise of the police sirens are cause of major human
distress yet DEC's survey does not even give any acknowledgement of
it.
4. If this is a serious peace of work, then where the evidence that
those appointed noises are actually harmful to us?
5. The intolerance to noise by humans is measured by decibels allied
to their medical conditions people can tolerate, instead of measured
by people's opinions in classifying noises
as `disturbing', `annoying', `noticeable' and so forth.
6. I suspect of the integrity and credibility of any research that
takes the opinion of 15% of the "total" result to deceivingly
classify motorcycles noises under the "HIGH AWARENESS" and "HIGH
ANNOYANCE". What are those "impacts caused on the individual" stated
on slide 14?????????????????? Once again, what assumptions are being
made here? This classification is biased and it's impoverished by
its wide generalization from such little and limited resource. Would
the same results be obtained if the study were replicated by us BA
members, within our neighborhood?
Why is it that some noises were mentioned on this survey and others
weren't? Why is motorcycle on the list? Is it because
your `personal' distaste to them? Why those questions weren't left
open to the public to point their own experienced noise's details?
Is it for fear that people would not mention motorcycles?
Finger pointing is a childish, destructive and it only marginalizes
individuals or groups within our society bringing further confusion
and hard feelings amongst people.
This survey clearly appears to be just another method of justifying
more revenue raisings through some stupid law enforcement that
achieves nothing valuable to the society.
Will a stupid sticker on my muffler reduce the 'annoyance' produced
by my pipes? Please justify!
