I was doing the putty loop today and as I was coming back through Wollombi I
noticed a new addition to the local population and was wondering if anyone
here can shed some light on the subject for me?
Seems they have had a population explosion of scarecrows or at the very
least what looks to be people made of straw. They sat along the roadside at
random intervals all the way through Wollombi and Laguna. At first I thought
it was a one off outside the pub but they are literally everywhere. School
kids on pushbikes outside the school yard, Choirboys outside a little
church, women sitting knitting or dressed in their Sunday best, what looked
like a council worker sitting on a chair with a stop sign in his hand, a
ghost near the church graveyard...etc.....I found them very entertaining
and quite effective in slowing down traffic. In fact in one spot I came
around a corner and there was a "man" reclined against the fence on the
other side of the road, at first glance it looked like a rider in leathers
had come to grief, that really slowed me down! but then I noticed that he
had straw hair and his "leathers" were actually what looked like cotton
pyjamas with black arrows as though he was an escaped convict.
Anyway as I said, extremely entertaining and very well done, looks like a
lot of time and effort has gone into them and I was wondering what their
real purpose was other than being a talking point amongst motorists.
PS Tamsyn, nice to bump into you today, I waited to see if you wanted to
ride back together but you seemed to do a disappearing act at Broke? so I
headed off........hope you had a good ride home and managed to avoid all
those Dicks in cars who seemed to think both sides of the road was theirs!
Cheers
Lindy
