Subject: [Delegates] Harbour Bridge Cash Booths

Removal of Harbour Bridge Cash Booths

What does it mean to a rider?
The choice of paying cash is to be removed.

The casual user of toll roads who has no E-Tag, will be charged
administration fees on top of the toll.
(the Harbour Tunnel is already cashless and expensive for the casual
user - fees will be the same as the Tunnel)

Many motorists and riders have no requirement for an E-Tag account
because they don't use toll roads very much at all.
Some simply avoid toll roads, others live in places where their commute
to work does not use toll roads. Others live out of town and only visit
Sydney occasionally.
Many riders have become so exasperated by fail-to-read Toll Notices,
they now avoid toll roads.

If the RTA succeeds in removing cashless booths, you are being bullied
into REQUIRING an E-Tag account, with all it's fees and free loan for
tolls in advance, deducted from your credit card. i.e. you are required
to lend money to the toll road operator for the tolls you MIGHT use.

The alternative provided by RTA is a mess, it's called an E-Toll Pass,
requiring you to give your credit card details to the RTA

A Harbour Bridge crossing will then cost you $5.25 instead of $3.00 as
long as you can pay this on-line
Without internet access, or without a credit card, a single trip over
the Harbour Bridge will cost you $9.25

This does not help you want to use any other toll roads in Sydney - it
ONLY works on the Harbour Bridge or Harbour Tunnel

Separate arrangements must be made to use EACH OF the Cross City Tunnel,
the Lane Cove Tunnel & M7

If you obtain an RTA E-Tag, you are liable for a Merchant Service fee
for use of your credit card (T&C Clause 3 (h) ), as well as any
administration fees the RTA chooses to levy against your account (Clause
2(a) and 2(b) ) This is in addition to the free loan in the form of your
"Deposit Account"

(100,000 E-tags at "minimum balance" means $2 million in the money
market, earning interest for the deposit holder)
e.g http://www.ubank.com.au/termDeposit/index.html will give 8.5% for 3
months (advertised through www.money.com.au)

The system of E-tolls has been made so complex, expensive and
inconvenient, that E-tags become attractive as the lesser evil, despite
the problems for riders.

Some riders choose to use an E-tag, yet fail-to-read Notices continue to
create an administrative nightmare for many.
The new E-tag holder works on some bikes, but not many
(my sportsbike has nowhere to mount it on the handlebars, as they turn
in slots in the fairing. The magnet is strong enough to wipe out credit
cards, but won't stick to the plastic fuel tank or anywhere else up
front)

Riders are not the only ones who oppose removal of cash booths
Non-Sydney residents
Pensioners
