Subject: [bikers_anon] MY FIRST TRACK DAY REPORT!
Hi Everyone,
Well, I am no longer a track day virgin as yesterday I spent the day at Eastern
Creek with Andre holding my hand (cheers mate!). I arrived just in time for the
compulsory rider briefing feeling a little tired and nervous as didn't sleep
much the night before as I was far too excited lying in bed trying to remember
the track layout, screaming around it in my head like I was Barry Sheen! The guy
giving the briefing was really good, explaining everything simply and clearly,
after registering it wasn't long before I was sat on the bike at the end of pit
lane waiting to go out for my first ever lap of a race track!
I started slowly, trying to pick out the flag marshalling points and then
learning the track, so that meant that I was being passed all over the place and
I was then feeling that perhaps I had been a little over optimistic by picking
the wrong group which was the B1 Green Group medium/fast. I was feeling a little
deflated after the first session as I was finding the track hard to learn and
very tricky and deceptive in places especially at turns 1, 8 and 9 was where I
was having the most difficulty. I thought about dropping to a lower group and so
I talked to EC staff and he said that nobody had a problem with me in that group
and to give it another go and don't worry about it just take my time.
So, onto the next sessions, the weather was always going to play its part and so
the annoying drizzle for the next couple of sessions made the track damp and
slippery in places which obviously made it more difficult for me but didn't seem
to slow anybody else up that much! So I knuckled down and really concentred on
picking my braking points and getting on the throttle as quickly as possible so
that I could drive out of the corners better which was where I was losing a lot
of time. By the end of the third session I was really getting into it, getting
faster and faster with more confidence, riding as smooth as possible but still
not able to go for it because of the bloody weather!
However, the last two sessions the sun came out and I had by now learnt the
track and I was flying! I even overtook several bikes that I couldn't stay close
to earlier in the day (Andre having the honour of being my first ever track day
victim, sorry mate)! All up it was a great day; I really enjoyed taking my bike
(Kawasaki Z1000) to somewhere near its limits and would definitely do another
one hopefully with some more BA members next time, there where the inevitable
spills and crashes, a fairly nasty one at turn 1 with two bikes taking each
other out but no one crashed from my group so I never saw a yellow flag which
was good so no laps lost and only a few delays for the other crashes, I hope
everyone was ok.
Many thanks to Andre, who didn't have the best of days (I will let him explain)
Cheers,
Paul Z1000
