a bike accident recently. Funds will go to her young family to
assist in their time of need.

Cost: 5 bucks if you wear a Hawaiian shirt or 10 bucks if you don't!
Time: 9am for 9.30am departure at the Mobil at Berowra
Who: anyone!! L and P platers ESPECIALLY welcome

We will be stopping at Mt White for some fun and games...think
Bikers and Hula Hoops! There will be competitions for: Best Hawaiian
Name and Best Hawaiian T-Shirt and there will also be a raffle.

Please email me back if you are coming to give me an idea of numbers
so we can 'bags' a good possie at the hotel for lunch.

Living close to and spending alot off time up the Old Road I have to agree that
CARS or BIKES overtaking on blind corners is definately not the go and a recipe
for a disaster. If they can't keep on their side of the road then keep off the
road........
Just my two cents worth ; )

I certainly do take your point, however, this girl rides well (both in

haviing fun - it was a windy stretch of road and they wanted to get
around and get on with it and DID push the point that she may
have been holding them up (that happens - it has happened to
me, but I do not harrass the other rider/driver). The point where I
really reacted was overtaing on a left hand bend over double
lines when there had been a constant stream of bikes coming
up the hill. I was cracking a decent pace and they wanted to
maintain a convey (1 person in each car) - hence stopping at the
bottom of the hill to re-group. next exception I took was the
reference to bike riders getting in their way. Which I took to mean
that while they wanted to 'cut' corners there were too many bikes
on the road to safely do that! No I am not going to the police
(apart from not having rego numbers) as i myself like to have a
bit fun on that road and would have been breaking the law myself
in keeping up with them! I do not, however, harrass/terrorise
other road users into getting out of the way, endanger other lives
by crossing the centre of the road or just be a 'pig headed, show
off dipstick' with 'my mates' .

I don't think anyone can condone 'road rage', but I think there is a
line in the sand that can be crossed and sometimes we feel like we
have to react. In the heat of the moment we have to decide to (a)
ignore the clown or (b) reach for the 12 gauge.
Ken, while your girlfriend might have been shaken up by those idiots,
just imagine if she had to watch as they guys pulled out guns and
ended the argument for you. These days, you just don't know.

Ken,

You can report this behaviour to the police who may (and only may)
decide to make an issue. Their attitude will depend on yours (ie.
are you willing to proceed further or are there witnesses prepared
to support you).

Although some will say that the police will not take action it may
just depend on where you report the incident and if other reports
have been received.

Either way, it is unfortunate that incidents of this nature occur
(and as Sam points out it occurs in the reverse also) but there is
no reason why someone must accept it.

Next time, do not try to kick their doors in but just lead them to
the local cop shop.

Thanks for the link alxxr,

The numerous Ku-ring-gai Highway Patrols up at Mt White are very busy, busy
fining motorcyclists for "unlabeled exhaust systems". Let's face it until
our police cowboys get spanked for being negligent we will always have
police engaged in "the fun alternative" chasing bikes on the desolate Old
Pacific Hwy.

> Why not at least report the incident to police. Dangerous driving
> tends to attract attention..

nah, I am sorry, it actually doesn't. Unless someone is taken away in an
ambulance, police will probably
not get involved and will not even take a report.

Sheez, I was on the receiving end of a bike acident as a result of a fail to
give way and after three visits,
to three different police stations, I was turned away each time. Not even
anything from the Police
Assistance line.

(BTW: I am suing the other driver, will know more by late November. Its actually
quite fun sending a
sherrif around to his work to serve him - damn wish i was there).

I have only once before been driven to the point of 'doing something more', this
was before 'road rage'
became a buzz word and later illegal. I had a punk p-plater driving like a
nutter cutting off many cars,
inluding me. Ended up that he was at the front of a line of traffic opposite to
the direction I was travelling,
about 30mins later. So, i got out of my car, walked upto him, he was a kid, and
so was I. I dont really
know what I was going to do, he smelt of beer and he had a bit of a attitude. I
reached into his car, pulled
out the keys and tossed them into the nearest drain - I coulnt beleive I made
that 3-point shot !

As I expected, i later got a call from the police, I was in a hire car and
probably wouldnt have been so
brave if I had a clear identity, but I explained it to the copper and that was
the last I heard of it. I reckon
the coppa had a word with him as well, he mumbled something like "ah, I thought
it was more like that".

Anyways, point is, I dont think Police can or will do much about these things
today. A shame really. And
the other point is, that the same incident today would probably land me in a
whole heap of poopoo, and
proably more than the innocent crazy manac drunk driver.

Why not at least report the incident to police. Dangerous driving
tends to attract attention..

And if an accident results later... and the report is on file... as-
kicking should follow.

And the truck driver had prior CONVICTION for using false plates. So
why didnt Constable Plod check the vehicle details when he was booked
for speeding in September?

I smell some interesting investigative journalism coming on.

Can see the 4 Corners opener..... hundreds of recreational
motorcyclists pulled over on the side of the road at Berowra to have
their exhausts tested.

Bikes booked for not displaying "Unleaded Fuel Only" stickers...

all major safety issues, absolute menace to the travelling public
these bikes...

Bill,
I used a magnetic tank bag on my CBR600 for many trips away. When
buying it i was a little concerned that it would interfer with my
riding, however i found that even when fully extended (so high that i
couldnt see my dash) it didnt get in the way.

Unforetuneately when i bought my GSXR i found that i lean too far
forward on the bike to fit a tankbag. So now I have two tail bags,
one is very small but very useful with a seat harness for
attachement. The other is much larger and I used it for the first
time to ride to phillip island and back.

The larger one uses straps and pointless plastic clips to attached to
the bikes luggage points. I found the straps frequently loosened and
the bag had a tendency to rotate on the seat even when the straps
were tight. Eventually while crossing corrugations at about 80-100kph
on a dirt road the stupid plastic clips on the straps broke and i was
very lucky not to have a serious accident when the bag came off and
one of the straps wrapped around the rear axle.

BTW Oxford bags were forced to put warnings on one of their tail bags
in the UK after more than one rider was killed or seriously injured
due to a tailbag coming off and going into the rear wheel!

If you intend to use a tail bag be very careful about the attachement
system. I would avoid any system with plastic clips and/or straps
lacking any stretch (as this causes them to loosen).

I believe a tank bag is a much better solution, provided that the bag
doesnt interfere with your riding.

In general your bikes suspension will perform better with weight
placed as close as possible to the bikes centre of mass. A tank bag
is the best solution to doing this. The ever popular rack puts the
weight in the worse place possible.

Ive got a old (a bit worn from a crash on the CBR600 with a car)
magnetic tank bag that you can borrow for the Snowy (or before) if
you wish to try one out.

overtaking bikes, or engaging in intimidation tactics, is
outrageously stupid. But I am sure grandma jones with failing sight

Ken, not whinging at all and justified, in my opinion, in your
actions and for raising the topic. But let's not forget that not many

To those who turned up for yesterdays ride I must apologise for my
self and the BA committee. I should have given a pre-ride briefing,
marked the stop at Mt White (sorry Holly), been a bit more animated
and friendly, and organised for more of a ride after getting to Mt
White. In my defense I had had very little sleep the night before,
resulting in my subdued attitude etc and once we got to Mt White it
was clear to me that I shouldnt ride any further than necessary.
Unforetuneately other members of the committee were also in recovery
mode or had other things to do.

Also we were unaware until the day before that the MotoGP telcast did
not begin until 9pm.

Attempts will be made to ensure these situations do not occur again.

Sorry,

bugger me with a fish fork, I really do have to get this off my

At this stage there were a couple of bikes (including my

What kind of pack are using on the Ventura rack? i.e. what size is it? I have
two Ventura bags that zip together but managed to do the Phillip Island trip
using one of them and a smaller seat bag, if you can zip another bag to yours
and want to borrow one of mine give me a yell.

I have an RJays magnetic tank bag - it's brilliant. I used it last
week for 3 nights away, and packed everything but my laptop in
it...without resorting to reversing underwear thank God!

But I ride a Hornet, more "upright" seating stance than on a Firestorm
so you may have space/visibility issues with a tank bag packed to its
capacity. I have seen sports-designed saddlebags and tail packs that
look just as effective, and may be more suited to your bike. However,
if you already have a rack, the tail pack may not work, they sit just
on the rear cowl. There is a whole spread on bags, etc, in this
month's Two Wheels - may give you some ideas and options.

Have fun on the run, sooo wish I were going!

Three injured in six-bike pile-up
October 31, 2004

THREE motorbike riders were injured, one critically, following a six-
bike pile-up north-west of Newcastle today.

A statement from the NRMA CareFlight helicopter said crews arrived
at the accident site, beside Putty Road about 70km south of
Singleton, about 2.30pm (AEDT).

One man, believed to be aged in his mid-20s from Sydney's west,
suffered head and chest injuries and a fractured right arm.

He was given a blood transfusion and a general anaesthetic and
placed on a ventilator to control his breathing, the statement said.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital where he arrived in a critical
condition about 4pm (AEDT), the statement said.

Two other injured riders were flown to John Hunter Hospital in a
serious but stable condition.

Hi James,

I'll take a stab at it :)

At 60km/h you are travelling at 16.7 metres per second
(60/60/60*1000). A GOOD rider can react in approx 1 second, so
reaction time = 16.7m/s. For an average rider lets say 1.5 seconds
(25m/s). I am mentally thinking that a decent bike should take no
more than 2-3 seconds to slow to a stop from 60km/h, resulting in a
total distance of 58 or so metres.....

Actually, I am sure it can be done in abour 30-35m...

FYI, from the Wipe off 5 campaign by Victoria's TAC -> "In general, a
car travelling at 60 km/h will take about 45 metres to stop under
hard braking" How long does it take I don't know.

Have a look at the following places for some more info
http://www.msgroup.org/TIP034.html
http://www.sdt.com.au/STOPPINGDISTANCE.htm

Police nabbed this truck (the infamous Mooney truck) for speeding
weeks ago but failed to do any routine checking ...it had false
numberplates, was unregistered , and was "known" to authorities for
flouting registration, insurance, and truck regulations.

Obviously more interested in writing out the speeding ticket and
being on their way than enforcing road safety.

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/10/29/1099028211946.html

So, nabbing noisy bikes up the Old Road is of far more importance to
state policy than reigning in the rampant abuses of the trucking
industry.

Who hasn;t travelled down the Hume Highway late or Pacific/New
England higwhays and been overtaken/hassled by trucks exceeding
140kph in the dead of night.

Let there be lots of dirty washing aired in RTA and police for the
entirely avoidable Mooney disaster. This truck was a known menace and
should not have been on the road.
