I think the DRLs are a great way for drivers to see our front mounted
number plates ;-)

Really, DRLs have pros and cons. I think the problem is that they
will both cause and reduce accidents. But who is in a position to
speculate which out weighs the other?

I guess there will be no end to our government throwing half baked
ideas out there just so they can say "they are doing something about
it".

Does anyone know if we will be upstairs? Just asking because we were
forced to sit downstairs for the Moto GP and all because someone
decided they would have a birthday or some rubbish in OUR spot!

Personally I think upstairs is much nicer and more comfortable.

Hi Everyone,

Do you have friends or neighbours about to start an
interesting building
project?

The crew here at 'Hot Property' are currently
searching for stories for our
new series and we're on the lookout for colourful
characters with a story to
tell. At the moment we're really after some
interesting weekend or small
building projects, eg, sheds, greenhouses, ponds,
kitchen/bathroom
renovations, outdoor ovens etc... but we're open to
possibilities.

If you know someone who has a project in the works
we'd love to hear from
them. Please feel free to pass on my email address or
phone number, 02 9437
2028 and I will chat with them further.

We were hoping to film the stories over the next few
months. We will
consider stories from all over Australia and I will
personally buy anyone a
case of beer if they can find someone building an
indoor bowling alley.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

All the best,

Scott

Second, this is the perfect forum to ask a question like that.
But, I can't help you out personally. There are a few monster riders

Last week we (Kyle, Sam - my kiddies, and I) stayed at my sister's
place at Rockhampton and I had a look around for work. Bought a
bargain of a caravan - 24ft for $350 - so we'll have our own space,
but I'll spend a few days renovating it a bit. It's going to be one
big open room and fits three full size single beds (they double as
lounges during the day), wardrobes, fridge, sink, long brekky bench
and tv/stereo!! There's even room for a toilet!!!

She's on a property so there's heaps of room. There's kangaroos
everywhere cause she's surrounded by bush and plains - neighbours
are very scattered, hardly any traffic (got people riding down the
road on horses and trail bikes), the sky is awesome at night without
city lights, school is a 10min walk down the road, "fresh" meat,
fruit and vegies that are very cheap, clean air, healthy living,
beach not too far away and for the last week it's been 35 degrees
every day!!

This weekend will be my last one that I can go for quick ride and
will probably head up to Mt White one afternoon. I've only got 10
days to pack the house and get it ready to rent cause we're leaving
next weekend.

From: Guy Stanford MCCofNSW
Sent: Wednesday, 30 March 2005 9:32 AM
To: MCC-Delegates
Subject: [Mcc-delegates] Daytime Running Lights - DRL's

Delegates,

Daytime Running Lights are on the discussion list as the next great accident
prevention scheme for governments.

It appears that they may be effective in a minor way in countries that have
low ambient light levels, i.e. those at very high latitudes, such as Norway
or Sweden.

Equally, they appear to have almost no effect in countries with high natural
lighting levels such as Australia.

However, in keeping with the usual "lets be like Europe" approach, the
evidence from Norway or Sweden will be used to justify an ADR for new cars
for DRL's. This is part of the "must be seen to be doing something".
Lights-on for motorcycles has not been able to clearly demonstrate crash
reduction, so why should DRL's for cars be any better? So what? Why not just
let them have their DRL's?

Because there is increasingly a concern that the introduction of DRL's for
cars will seriously compromise motorcycle safety.

In low light conditions, DRL's may offer increased visibility or the ability
of a driver to detect another vehicle (yep, if they are actively looking -
as riders we have all got first hand experience of this argument). Again, we
can argue that increased driver vigilance is the key - the 11% crash
reduction following the Motorcycle Awareness program in NSW gives an
indication of the results achievable.

HOWEVER,

"what attracts, also distracts"

The risk now is that we will be "lost in a sea of lights".

It is worth noting that when "lights-on" was first introduced for
motorcycles, there was an increase in motorcycle crashes. This was at odds
with the academic research that was used as the basis for introducing them.
Riders at the time fought long and hard to overturn the lights-on law. The
Australian Federal government knows that if we decide to argue this point,
they have a fight on their hands with ordinary riders.

Please start your inquiry by reading the documents referenced here:-

http://www.safespeed.org.uk/~dadrl/links.html

BOOKMARK the above page, it is being used by other international rider
organisations as a pivot point for this issue. I would like to compile
comments made on each document read by anyone - many different views will
avoid missing some critical point - Australians have an excellent recored of
going for the commonsense arguments in these sorts of issues, so please, do
not be overwhelmed into thinking that the Europeans have got it under
control - they don't !

We need to get our heads around this issue - FAST !

Then start preparing our submissions to be fed to the Federal government via
ATSB MSCC and the NRSS Panel. It is my view that DRL's are potentially
dangerous for riders. We need to support or deny that view before filing our
submission.

We have three months to prepare.

I will be preparing CD's of futher documents in the short term for
distribution to interested parties and hope to have the website loaded with
relevant documents within a month.

Anyone out there who has the inclination for committee work on this issue?
We need a Chairman-Driver to manage this and assistance from academics and
policy experts. Email me, meet the MCC of NSW Management Committee, talk it
over with them.

I am moving to Rockhampton shortly and it'll cost me about $250 to
fly back here (will be taking the car up first) and ride it up

All,

I would like to send the following letter to Michael Costa, any comments?

Safe riding,

The Hon Michael Costa MLC
Minister for Roads
Level 31, Governor Macquarie Tower,
1 Farrer Place,
Sydney NSW 2000

Dear Sir,

Motorcycle Safety - The Old Pacific Highway

It was disappointing to see that at least 4 police motorcycles and 2 police
cars were assigned to patrol the Old Pacific Highway from Berowra to
Somersby on Sunday 20th March 2005. This deployment coincided with a
motorcycle show at Old Sydney Town.

The Old Road is popular with motorcyclists and as a result it has a higher
than average number of motorcycle crashes.

Several other regions with motorcycle popular roads have successfully
addressed the issue of motorcycle safety using all of the "3E's", namely
Education, Engineering and Enforcement. Yet those responsible for road
safety on the Old Road have chosen to use only Enforcement.

In 2002 the Snowy Region was recognised as having an over representation of
motorcycle crashes and the Snowy Region Motorcycle Safety Group (SRMSG) was
formed to bring together all the stakeholders namely Police, RTA, Road
Safety Officers (RSO), the National Parks and Wildlife Service and
motorcycle groups. This group has been successful in addressing motorcycle
safety issues using all 3E's by introducing a number of initiatives
including a motorcycle road safety audit and the publication of a number of
tourism/safety brochures.

The Royal National Park south of Sydney is another motorcycle popular road
where motorcycle safety has been addressed by the RTA and Road Safety
Officers using all of the 3E's by conducting a road safety audit and
promoting 'Breakfast Torque', a motorcycle safety day that was held at
Loftus Park.

The local Councils in the Hunter Region have produced a motorcycle
tourism/safety booklet called 'Motorcycling the Hunter' and at the Old
Sydney Town Motorcycle Show 600 of these booklets were distributed to riders
by the RSO's for Cessnock and Dungog and the Motorcycle Council of NSW
(MCC).

In addition to the Hunter booklet the MCC distributed several hundred
motorcycle safety booklets and brochures produced by SRMSG, Illawarra and
Southern Highlands Councils, the RTA and the Australian Transport Safety
Bureau.

In November 2001 the MCC participated in a road safety audit from a rider
perspective of the Old Road but as yet it appears no corrective actions have
been implemented. The major defects identified in the audit process have yet
to be addressed.

In May 2003 the MCC, on behalf of the Gosford Council, conducted a survey of
riders of the Old Road to determine their safety concerns. As an outcome of
this survey an Old Road specific motorcycle safety brochure was prepared.
However, funding was withdrawn and the brochure was never published.

Summary

Would you please advise why, when other regions have successfully addressed
the issue of motorcycle safety using Educational, Engineering and
Enforcement initiatives, the decision has been made that Educational and
Engineering initiatives are inappropriate for the Old Road and Enforcement
is the only solution being pursued?

My boss is selling her bike. She doesn't ride it anymore due to
other commitments so I said I'd post it up to see if anyones
interested. It's located in Melbourne but at only 1700 km on the
clock it may be worth the trip down and back!

It's got a Yoshi pipe and the Original pipe too, and ventura rack
included and it's immaculate! I have the same bike so I can HIGHLY
reccommend...esp as an excellent upgrade from a LAM's bike.

Sydney Morning Herald:
RTA stalls on tunnel risk signs.
By Alexandra Smith, Transport Reporter
March 29, 2005

"The Roads and Traffic Authority has failed to install signs advising
drivers to wind up their windows to block out air pollution in the M5
East tunnel despite pleas from government agencies."

The RTA Safety guidelines are.

· Switch air-conditioning to recirculate air.

· Leave your radio on.

· Take sunglasses off, unless optical prescription glasses.

· Avoid changing lanes.

Source: RTA draft brochure Staying Safe in Sydney's road tunnels

I can't find a switch to recirculate the air on my MZ!
I guess I can install a radio with the E-tag behind my front number plate.

In mid 2003, a NSW Health Study reported that Motorcyclists and people
in open-topped cars should avoid the M5 East tunnel if traffic is
delayed or risk exposure to dangerous levels of air pollution.

Pending the development of guidelines, the health report recommends
motorists in open vehicles and motorcyclists, "avoid using the tunnel
when transits are likely to be prolonged, particularly if they suffer
from asthma".
