130km/h but no loss of licence
By LILLIAN SALEH and JAEDENE HUDSON
July 1, 2005
MOTORISTS clocked at driving at 130km/h will no longer automatically lose
their licences under changes to road rules sneaked through Parliament by the
State Government.

Three years ago former transport minister Carl Scully ordered an "absolute
prohibition" on vehicles travelling in excess of 130km/h - introducing a
minimum automatic one-month licence suspension.
Motorists also faced hefty fines of $2200 for vehicles, and $3300 for
trucks.
Those penalties have now been scrapped, with Roads Minister Michael Costa
amending the Road Transport Regulation to remove the "additional penalties".

Tunnel toll goes up - before it's even open
By LILLIAN SALEH Political Reporter
July 1, 2005

FIRST its much-hyped opening was postponed. Now the cost of a trip has been
increased without a single car having passed through the Cross City Tunnel.

Tolls for the tunnel will rise today despite the $680 million tunnel
remaining closed to traffic.

One-way trips will now cost motorists $3.53 - up from the $3.49 announced in
April. Truck drivers will be slugged an extra 7c a trip, with the toll
rising from $6.98 one way to $7.05.

CrossCity Motorway, the operators of the state's first fully electronic
tollway, yesterday made no apologies for the increases, despite the tunnel
yet to open to traffic.

Under an agreement between the State Government and CrossCity Motorway, the
toll on the 2.1km tunnel linking Darling Harbour and Kings Cross will rise
quarterly by 1 per cent or CPI - "whichever is the larger".

A CrossCity tunnel spokesman said yesterday this was agreed to because of
the "complex financial arrangements" in place to build the tunnel.

He said the increases would be small compared to other toll roads, which
rise prices in 50c increments.

Casual users of the CrossCity Tunnel without an electronic tag will be
charged an extra $1.60 "administration fee" each way.

Opposition roads spokesman Andrew Stoner said Premier Carr owed motorists an
explanation.

"Premier Bob Carr and Roads Minister Michael Costa walked through the tunnel
on April 20 in their hard hats crowing that the tunnel would open on June
12," Mr Stoner said.

"They are now red faced with no revised date set for the opening and news
that motorists will be slugged even more than expected.

"Labor negotiated the Cross City Tunnel contract and it must explain why it
is allowing toll increases before the tunnel even opens.

"The toll on the Cross City Tunnel was originally set for cars at $2.50 by
the Carr Labor Government, with the figure displayed on the RTA's website
until as late as April this year.

"The $3.49 toll announced in April was already more than double the
inflation rate, let alone another toll hike."

Roads Minister Michael Costa said yesterday the toll was a matter for the
tunnel's operators.

Very regrettable sale but now urgently need to sell it. It sticks to
corners, got lots of power and sounds beefy. Would be ideal as a track
bike but is just as good on road. Bike is with a friend on Central
Coast to sell for me as I'm in Brisbane and shortly moving to Far North
Qld. Photos available soon

If anyone knows of good dealership I'd get a decent price for it for
cash please let me know.

I saw a motorcycle lift (hoist) advertised in Two Wheels magazine. It is a
scissor type lift
and there seem to be a few mobs that sell them based either in QLD or VIC. From
what I can
tell they are all selling the same lift.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a supplier for such lifts in Sydney. They seem
to be
around the $550 mark.

Thanks,

Adam

I didn't miss it Big.

I felt it was important to end that discussion. Before anyone said
anything that wasn't in jest.

So I got your joke, but others might not.

Your contribution to our online group is truly appreciated and I do not
intend to influence how or what you say here (as long as it is within
the set rules). But if you are going to make a joke just remember that
sarcasm is easily misinterpreted in the written form.

If you want to settle this once and for all then meet me behind the bike

Spotted this letter in today's SMH - thought it worthy of a post.

*Dangerous page turner*
A note to the woman who was driving 10kmh slower than the rest of the
traffic in the right lane of the M4 in the rain on Monday morning because
she was so absorbed in reading the newspaper she had spread across the
steering wheel: I realise your two children in the back seat were not
stimulating enough company, but I wish you were paying more attention to the
traffic, particularly the motorcyclist you nearly took out (me) as you
turned the page. I would never risk my children's lives like that.

To the chap shaving as he drove along Victoria Road shortly afterward, I
hope you have as exciting a moment as you gave me.

Is there any chance the police might consider a return to patrolling the
roads?

For those of you who asked to be kept up to date with the kryptonite locks....
below is an email I received today.

Dear Kryptonite Customers,

Thank you very much for your patience over the last few months as Kryptonite
worked to re-engineer and manufacture replacement locks for the tubular cylinder
lock exchange programme. So far, Kryptonite has shipped more than 300,000
replacement locks to countries around the globe, including Australia and New
Zealand. As you might imagine, this has been an enormous undertaking.

While tubular cylinders have been used in many other brands of locks, we are
most proud to let you know Kryptonite is the ONLY lock company conducting such
an
extensive exchange programme. We remain committed to provide to you, our
customers (our most valuable asset), a product which is not only market
leading, but also of the highest reliability and quality.

We are pleased to let you know that we are ready to begin delivering
replacement locks to those of you who registered for the replacement programme
on the
Kryptonite website.

On Saturday, 9th of July, 2005, we will have 13 staffed exchange locations
across Australia. Please come to one of these locations, between the hours of
10.00am and 3.00pm, to receive either a complete replacement lock or a
replacement
crossbar, with new non-tubular cylinder, depending on the type of lock you
registered for replacement.

If you are not able to get to one of these sites on the July 9th, please send a
message to kryptonite@..., to the attention of Nicholas Peddar. He
will make arrangements to send your replacement item to your local motorcycle
or bicycle store, for your exchange.

To receive your replacement, you must turn in your old lock and keys.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to give you your replacement item without
these.

If you are exchanging a bicycle lock that was sold with a carrying bracket,
please keep all parts of your bracket system, including any pieces attached to
the
lock, so that you can use it with your new lock.

The exchange locations and the Kryptonite programme representative for that
area are listed below:

MOTORCYCLE COUNCIL of NSW

I would like to extend my warmest "thank you" to each of the riders who
participated in yesterdays toll protest in Sydney.

Despite the awful weather, over 350 riders showed discipline, courage
and determination to take a stand against unfair tolls.
Beats the hell out of just whinging about it!

All NSW riders, please recognise the good work done in this protest by
these riders and the clubs who backed it up. It was an excellent "tribal
mix" with heavy cruisers mixing it with 250 commuters, a delightful
colourful showing from the scooter clubs, solid support from sports
riders, tourers and off-roaders.

Police were good. A very straight road safety function and no hassles.
The discipline from riders allowed them to relax and make it easy for
everyone. The main concerns were aggressive cars attempting to bust
through the stream of riders on the Bridge.

There were some great moments. The "Black Team" did a brilliant job at
the southbound Northern Harbour Tunnel entrance, delivering a clear
message about the speed at which a motorcycle can pay a manual toll.
This was re-inforced by the TV film shown by Channel 9 with the "after
protest" team at the Cahill Expressway toll gates, where riders were
simply paying tolls as normal - this is only in the Ch 9 coverage.

This protest was extremely successful, putting the issue firmly onto the
public agenda with a clear, simple story.
The discipline showed by riders worked for us all, charming the TV
cameras and all media reports are positive.

Arthur Chesterfield-Evans of the Democrats backed us with a press
release, giving additional credibility, then rode pillion with MCC
Vice-Chairman Warren Bufett.
After Warren dropped Arthur back at Parliament House, he scooted up to
Watson's Bay to wait for the rest of his BMW Touring Club and while
there, bailed up Kim Beazley on the footpath and handed him the bumper
sticker, explaining the toll issue and directing him to watch the TV
news. Apparently a bemused Beazley

Well done everyone!

MCC of NSW

Short ride report from Brad Jayakody (BA MCC):-

I thought there were around 400 bikes there + a whole bunch of pillions.

This was also with the rain on in the morning.

Turnout would have been much better on a sunny day. The number of
harley riders was neglible (and they normally outnumber the sports
bike riders on rides like this, ala Toy Run).

It also made the Ch 9 news (with a good short interview with Guy
Stanford).

I felt it was very well organised by the MCC. They had stickers
handing out stating what we were protesting. "A more fair toll and a
tag that works". Most riders stuck it on the back of their leathers so
cagers could read it.

Lots of police. But all totally cool. I think the Salvo's raised a bit
of cash as well.

We were instructued to leave the left lane open for the cages across
the bridge (which we did). There was a little bit of aggro and cars
cutting across (my pillion was saying some looked pissed off, of
course the kids in the cars loved it).

I peeled off after the bridge, as the wife had the flu, so I didn't
end up at the final ride point (North Sydney, I think), for the debrief.

There were also a fair number of scooters in the ride as well, which
was pretty cool.

But, yeah, at least Ch 9 & Ch 10 news coverage, so looks good.

I saw myself in the helicopter footage of bikes crossing the bridge
(channel 9).

Thanks to all who came along. It was a great display of support.

Sadly the article is technically incorrect.

> Cyclists and taxis are legally allowed to travel
> in bus lanes but not in bus-only lanes as on the
> Harbour Bridge.

Motorcycles and taxis are permitted to use the bus lane on the harbour
bridge as it is not a bus-only lane.

We can only hope the rest of the article refers to bicyclists, rather
than motorcyclists.

I would have thought just Taxis as they tend to stop and set-down &
pick-up and pushbikes as they are too slow - that was they way I read
it - I certainly don't think that I slow buses down!

Bus-lane ban looms for bikes

by Bruce McDougall

Road chiefs will consider a proposal to ban cyclists and taxis from
bus lanes.

Roads Minister Michael Costa has asked the Roads and traffic Authority
to investigate if a ban would improve safety and traffic flows in the
city.

His move follows a request from the bus union to change the law that
allows cyclists and taxis to share bus lanes.

Bus drivers have complained cyclists riding in bus lanes have become a
hazard riding in the city. Theyt say bikes obstruct buses causing
delays to services affecting thousands of passengers.

"I'm sympathetic to the conerns of bus drivers in the CBD," Mr Costa said.

"The NSW Government's plans to unclog the CBD will see more bus
priority measures to cut travel times.

"That includes new bus lanes and extending the operating hours of
existing lanes. That's why I've asked the RTA to look at this issue
in more detail."

The bus division of the rail, Tram and Bus Union called for the taxi
and cyclists ban during a meeting with senior Transport Ministry officals.

Cyclists and taxis are legally allowed to travel in bus lanes but not
in bus-only lanes as on the Harbour Bridge.

Now, now. I am sure Chris could say something like "and I never see you
at any MCC meetings, in the face of politicians, working in your spare
time for the cause". but lets kept the gloves on and just pat ourselves
on the back for what was achieved.

And let's hope it was enough to initiate a rethink from the government.

Hi Col, et al

Way down south in Canberra we watched the coverage on TV, and I wish to
congratulate the MCC for orchestrating an effective and co-ordinated display
of the motorcyclist's dissatisfaction, with toll collection methodologies
and charges.

Protests of this calibre demonstrate the cohesiveness needed by motorcycling
to get its united view to the powers that be.

Well done all round.

Cheers,

Pete

Ahh no worries.... she'll be right as I don't ride over the speed limit
anyway. You may as well hold my bike together with Blue Tak with the
amount of stress I put on it!!
