Mike (and yes i am referring to myself in the third person) is getting
excited about this Saturday's FYAO ride!

But Mike has no idea where the ride begins and at what time!

Please don't keep Mike in the dark for too long. He's going insane! As it
is Mike is prancing around the house wearing nothing but a Shoei helmet &
Sidi Boots... not good!

the problem with making the wearing of long pants, gloves etc legal
is to what standard do those things have to measure up to. if you
wear a pair of ski gloves, trakky pants, dunlop volleys and a
raincoat you are not really doing much in the way of protection. also
what if/when someone has an accident, do they say that they thought
they were properly protected and point the finger of blame at ???
don't get me wrong, i cringe whenever i see people on bikes
without 'proper' protective clothing, and wish there was an easy
answer.
as with most things in life, i think that education and an acceptance
of being part of the problem and solution is the way to go, but with
young guys and gals who are invincable, and a bunch of people who
only see scooters as being cheaper than the car, we have a long way
to go.

Hi Oggie,

The army does have a rider training course for just that purpose (trying to
keep their soldiers alive long enough to send them to Afghanistan :( but you
need to be on your Ps to qualify for it. And sadly what they do in civilian
time is up to them, and it isnt illegal to ride without gear, (although
sometimes I wish it was) I am sure a lot of people only wear a helmet
because they have to, I cant understand why it isnt illegal to at least wear
closed shoes, a jacket and long pants, if not gloves...if you cant afford
the gear you certainly cant afford the hospital bills or time off work if
you do hit the road unprotected.

Another aspect, which I didnt even think about was when I read a story of
a woman who got knocked over on a pedestrian crossing.

She only fractured her leg in the fall, but her worst injuries were the
burns received from the baking hot tarmac on the road.

Sadly telling people it hurts doesnt go along way.....

You pick up your habits from the others you ride with (the good and bad
ones).

I'd have thought a letter to his superior might work.... I guess they dont
want to loose army recruits to time in Hospital so a good old threat from
the "yelling" officer of running round the yard at 1AM fully kitted out if
caught sqidding again might work better....

Of course Yahoo will mangle the link so you will have to work on it, ask your
son to run as fast as he can then throw himself down on the road wearing just
shorts and a t-shirt, when he obviously says he wont, point out on a bike he'd
be doing exactly that but at about 10 times the speed!

Hi Guys

I need a little help in finding an old thread (think it was through the
knights forum about 2 years ago?) about a girl in the US who was Pillion and
fell off the back of the bike, she was wearing no protective gear and was
posting about her wounds and healing process.

All I remember is that her injuries were quite extensive (akin to 3rd degree
burns) requiring skin grafts to heal, and that apparently it was a helmet
malfunction that caused her to come off?

anyway the reason I am looking for this article is that my son (who is in
the army in Darwin) thinks it is cool to ride around in shorts and t shirt
with NO SHOES!!!

my nagging him as a mother (including gory Emergency Department stories) is
doing nothing...so thought I would try a reality check... as far as I know
he has only done it once (yeah right only got caught on camera once that
is!!!)

anyone with a better memory than mine is welcome to hand over any links they
have..

Cheers
Lindy

Hi all
A family friend's step-daughter is coming out from the US to study as a
post-grad at Macquarie University and is looking for reasonably priced
accommodation walking, cycling (or direct bus) distance from that university.
Does anyone have, or know of someone who has, a room to rent?  Unfortunately
she's not a biker (although her father, uncle and grandfather have all had
bikes in the US along the way) but who's to say she can't be converted!
I only know her name is Alyssa, she's in her early to mid-20s and her mum is
married to a dear long-time friend of my family.  She loves dogs and is
arriving in about 1 month.
Please let me know if anyone has anything and I'll put you in touch.
Regards
Sarah N

The next Learn 'n' GRO is on this coming Saturday 14th June.

One learner is coming from south west Sydney and would like a buddy to
assist her in getting to The Ranch at Eastwood. Is anyone willing to get us
bright and early on Saturday morning to ride with her to The Ranch then onto
HART?

I cannot do it as I am pregnant and Andre is injured (hence neither of us
are riding).

You need to get to the Ranch by 7.15am so it means a very early start.

If you want to find out more information go to the Girls Ride Out website
http://www.girlsrideout.com/LearnnGRO.htm.

Please reply to this email if you are interested.

It's an excuse for a ride.

Thanks in advance.

I think what they meant is All bus lane except T ways (ie bus lanes
and bus only lanes). There are a few errors in there though.

Covermore will do rental bikes up to 200cc.
otherwise get a hold of Digby at www.exploreindochina.com and ask him.
I was chatting to him about it a few weeks ago and he mentioned he had

Below is an article? based on a media relaease from the NSW Greens. It
is significant that we have a political party pushing for a better go
for motorcyclist. Whether you support the Greens as a political party
or not, having issues affecting motorcyclists on the political agenda
is an important development.

If you would like to see more of this sort of thing then send a
thankyou email to lee.rhiannon@... Ive just sent one
myself.

Motorcycle boom demands lower tolls, better parking and bus lane access

Greens MP and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon is calling for a
better deal for motorcyclists in NSW in the face of climate change,
rocketing petrol prices and a boom in sales, with 18 percent more on
on-road motorcycles sold in 2007 than 2006 across Australia (page X,
Sun Herald).

The Greens NSW have initiated its first motorcycle policy, calling for:

· lower tollway fees for motorcycles than cars (identical tolls
now paid in NSW)

· extra parking for motorcycles

· motorcycles to use all on-road bus lanes (not bus only
T-ways/buses to retain right of way).

"With rocketing petrol prices, commuters are increasingly turning to
motorcycles, particularly in areas poorly serviced by public transport
like Western Sydney," Ms Rhiannon said.

"Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal should be encouraging motorcycling.
They use less fuel and create fewer emissions in their production and
use. Motorcycles reduce congestion, parking problems and road wear and
tear.

"Ideally, commuters would be accommodated by a top-class public
transport system but as the NSW government has failed to provide this
then motorcycles are a good alternative.

"Motorcyclists should pay lower tolls than cars. NSW is the only state
that tolls motorcycles at the same rates as cars. In Victoria,
motorcyclists pay no tolls and in Queensland they pay 30-50 percent of
the car toll.

"On city streets which already have car parking spaces, the Greens are
calling for first and last spaces on each street to be dedicated to
motorcycle only parking.

"One car parking space can be used more efficiently for motorcyclists,
accommodating eight motorcycles. Vision at intersections will also be
improved.

"Allowing motorcycles in bus-only lanes already occurs in the ACT on
the basis it improves traffic flow and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

"It's safer for motorcyclists to use bus lanes because one of the most
frequent types of accidents involves motorcycles being rear-ended by a
car while stopped at traffic lights," Ms Rhiannon said.

Nearly 130,000 motorcycles were sold in 2007. Smaller motorcycles are
selling well, with the most popular selling road bike being the kind
of scooter used by posties.

How good was Thursday night's dinner and movie? Awesome effort to everyone
involved, especially Mike and Dave for going all the way to NZ and riding

I can't wait to see it again at Bathurst.

Great company both new and old and a really good vibe! Bathurst is going to
go off!

BAr's

The ride to the Bathrust Weekend Away will start at McGraths Hill
Mobil on Windsor Road, meet at 9am for a 9:30am departure. From here
we will head over the blue Mountains to Hartley for a morning Tea stop
(or coffee if you insist). Here we will split into two riding groups.
One for those that wish to take a short, scenic ride to Bathrust
(avoiding the Great Western Highway). The other ride will be very
scenic and stray further afeild from the Great Western Highway, with
some more challenging roads taken in (so for the most experienced riders).
Come and join the fun, and take full advantage of the set of two
wheels that you own. This is what you bought it for, to be ridden,
not just looked at.

The BA committee.

Subject: [Delegates] National Transport Plan - WRITE A LETTER !!!!

We need riders to stand up, by writing a letter to the Federal Minister
for Transport.

The recently released new National Transport Plan makes no mention of
motorcycles.
Neither do the State Transport Plans anywhere in Australia.

A new National Transport Plan
http://www.ntc.gov.au/NewsDetail.aspx?page=A0240030550000002000259
NOT ONE MENTION OF MOTORCYCLES

Write to:

The Hon A (Anthony) Albanese MP
Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local
Government Parliament House CANBERRA ACT 2600

AND

copy the letter to your favourite local Ministers on this page:
http://www.atcouncil.gov.au/about_us/membership.aspx

Please ask ALL riders to write a letter.
The new Fed govt tells us it will listen if we speak.

It's the right time to SPEAK UP!

Ask Albanese to provide an answer of WHY NOT????

Why no mention of motorcycles as a valid and explosively growing mode of
transport?
Have the administrators failed him?
Why this blindness? Is it ignorance, or prejudice, or incompetence?
Which?

With fuel prices skyrocketing, motorcycle and scooter numbers will
continue to grow.
Failure to include them in planning means INAPPROPRIATE strategies for
transport and safety will arise from ill-informed ignorance Failure to
accommodate motorcycles and scooters in planning will increase crash
risks

Motorcycles and scooters are environmentally sustainable, frugal users
of fuel and the only class of road transport that has REDUCED its
contribution to greenhouse gas emissions
http://www.mccofnsw.org.au/a/207.html

Why have motorcycles been forgotten in Transport Planning? Yet again????
This marginalises motorcycle riders, making motorcycles subject to
ill-informed prejudices by administrators.

e.g. tolls - why are motorcycles charged the same as cars?

Can he provide any better answer than "we forgot", (so bikes just got
reclassified as cars ) Motorcycles were not considered at all in the
planning for private toll roads under "PPP" arrangements

Inappropriate technology for tolling means riders are inconvenienced by
masses of paperwork and forced to pay for a failure that is not their
responsibility.

Can he tell us why bicycles are not charged a toll?
Under the National Road Rules, applicable in ALL States and Territories,
a bicycle is "a vehicle" and hence is liable to pay a toll

Can he, as the new Minister demonstrate some leadership, or will he
abandon his responsibility and force riders to take extreme actions
through protests?

The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce makes excellent points in
their press release of 2 June 2008 here: http://tinyurl.com/5do26z

Hi All

A new website for Scorpa Australia and The Hell Team.

There has been a huge amount of work going on in the back room at The Hell
Team, but the new website is finally online.

Plenty of late nights, coffee stained keyboard, and blood shot eyes ..... but
the new babies online.

The website has the usual news, links, info on trials bikes etc, and has a
heap of cool little movies, and a pretty flash little webstore amongst other
things.

There is technical downloads of Parts, User and Engine manuals. Some helpful
little tech essays, Old TY lists and lots of little nooks and crannies to
poke around in.

The Observer Training Project is online.

And there is plenty more planned for the next few months. we figured at
least this would get the ball rolling.

Check it out at:

www.thehellteam.com

PS. I've tried my hardest to get this right, but if you come across any
errors, or if you have any constructive criticisms please dont hesitate to
give it to me, both barrels, on:

Ian,

Last November we stayed at "The Waves Apartments" who have a special rate
available (about $35-$40/person/night twin share) when you mention that you
are doing a ride day with Phillip Island Ride Days. They also had give away
of a free pi ride day via a draw of all those who stay there on the night
before/after a ride day. Damn good odds. I don't have their number handy but
I'm sure you will be able to locate them. They are situated in Cowes.

Enjoy the trip.
