The Sydney City Council Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy is an
important moment for motorcyclists.

Not only does it place scooters and motorcycles within a transport
strategy rather than a safety strategy, but it can also be used as a
template for other councils. This means that they can quickly and
easily implement a policy with little work required on their own part.
It removes a major hurdle and will hopefully result in the adoption of
similar policies throughout NSW local coucnils.

Once the strategy is implemented in the Sydney City Council area it
will be time for riders to lobby their own local council for a similar
strategy/policies.

The Sydney City Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy was passed by Council
last night

Well done to all riders who have assisted this proces

This has been a long process for the MCC of NSW, with initial efforts
dating back to 2003.
In late 2004, after lobbying by the MCC of NSW, the City of Sydney hired
Liz DeRome to conduct consultation with riders in an effort to deal with
issues under the "Road Safety" heading.
At a public consultation meeting in 2005, arranged by Delegates of the
MCC, issues such as parking and security were raised. (Thanks here to
John Littler of Ausmoto)
(in fact, the issues raised are remarkably similar to the Strategy
passed last night)
With no provision for motorcycles as a separate class of road user, the
"road safety" focus was too narrow and the "road user amenity" issues
failed to proceed, although road safety initiatives did.

Continued lobbying by the MCC of NSW attempted to raise the parking
issues to the level of "Transport Policy".
This was a difficult period, requiring a considerable amount of contact
time with both political and administration arms of the City of Sydney
( Particular thanks here to Simon Disney of Hawkesbury-Nepean and
Clinton Hayes of BAPMUG for tireless and high quality work)

To their credit, administration management of the SCC saw the failure
to include motorcycles as a "gap" in their overall Transport Policy and
started the arduous process of creating a transport policy that actively
included motorcycles . This was clearly at odds with NSW State Transport
planning, which regards motorcycles as "vehicles", where motorcycles are
treated simply as "small cars", with no provision for the specific
safety or amenity needs of this class of transport. Pressures against
this process usually come from administrative inertia, resisting ANY
change, but also from bicycle and pedestrian lobbies who tend to be
narrow in their view and see motorcycles and scooters as "competitors"
for road space.

The SCC saw the need to provide Transport Planning that was inclusive
and could regulate a balance between all modes of Transport.

The Sydney City Council hired Peter Thoeming, a well known motorcycle
magazine editor to compile issues and prepare a draft motorcycle and
scooter policy.

The City of Sydney has shown independent thinking, rather than caving-in
to big political party dogma or noisy pressure groups.
This process of reason is to be applauded.

The City of Sydney is the FIRST jurisdiction in Australia to create a
Transport Policy that specifically includes motorcycles and scooters.
In debate, some councillors used the interesting terminology of "active
positive discrimination" to counter what they saw as "traditional
negative discrimination" in relation to motorcycles.

The Policy has become more useful as a result of the public consultation
process.
Sure, it ain't perfect, but it will vastly improve life for motorcycle
riders and provides a base or foundation upon which future improvements
may be built.

The Policy passed unanimously

We congratulate the City of Sydney on this initiative.

Riders, we have reached the first step in equity.
Celebrate.

We are all road users and we all share the road.

State governments have yet to wake up to this, but the biggest local
Council in Australia has done so.

With perfect warm weather again, the lovely Tamsin lead 10 keen riders
through the quiet sweeping roads to Oberon. On the way, somehow ??, I
managed to lose one rider (Carl, please let us know your ok) before we
even reached the Bells Line of Road? The search party gave up and we
continued the ride and had a pleasant day out - it was warm, the roads
were perfect, the company good and to finish off watching the MotoGP
was a superb way to spend any Sunday.

Thanks to everyone that turned up and look forward to seeing you on the
Putty - if anyone has suggestions for the next ride calendar, please
let us know asap

Dear Delegates

All good things must come to an end - maybe!
We want all Clubs to know that WIMA will not be running any more Pink
Ribbon Rides. Next Sunday will be our last ride. It has taken over our
lives and we now want to spend more time on our Club.

A couple of years ago an attempt to expand the Pink Ribbon Ride
committee didn't work. As much as they wanted to, work commitments and
other reasons meant most of those people couldn't continue on the
committee.

This time we are asking for expressions of interest from Clubs only. If
we get any offers we will organise a meeting of reps from those Clubs
just to pass on what information we have eg about major sponsors and
supporters, the website, the bank account, etc. They can then decide if
they want to make the commitment. We think a Club will be a better
option because members will be more easily replaced if circumstances
change and someone can't continue. Insurance cover to indemnify the
volunteer organisers is also a good idea.

If no Club comes forward, or is willing to take it on after the meeting,
we will have to shut up shop. Let's make it a good one for the sake of
the cause we are all supporting.

Don't forget Lord Animal will be our celebrity ribbon cutter.

Track Day at Eastern Creek on Sat, 11th Oct was, as always, a blast -
we had a small group and we all seemed to enjoy burning the rubber on
the tyres without mishap or incident - perfect weather helped and Andre
you were missed but with a good reason. Always nice to see the Bikers
Anon banner flying too.

Sunday, 12th Oct was our learner bike ride through the Nasho to
Stanwell Park - again a small group with one irish learner who actually
learned quite a lot on the day - the soccer match never really
eventuated but the weather was perfect and the company good. - Suzuki
reigns yet again.

Just what I do too, Ross.
I also get out the BIG BLACK TEXTA and write on their bill - "When are you
going to get a tag that suits motorbikes".
I don't always get a bill either - reckon I pay approx 70% of time- so I'm
going to keep on keeping on doing it.

I don't have a tag, I just ride through and wait for the bill. Once it
arrives I fill in my mates e-tag details fax it from work and give him the
cash. Only have to pay the regular toll and I have the satisfaction of
knowing it probably cost the toll operater more in admin and postage than
the amount of the toll!!!

Removal of Harbour Bridge Cash Booths

What does it mean to a rider?
The choice of paying cash is to be removed.

The casual user of toll roads who has no E-Tag, will be charged
administration fees on top of the toll.
(the Harbour Tunnel is already cashless and expensive for the casual
user - fees will be the same as the Tunnel)

Many motorists and riders have no requirement for an E-Tag account
because they don't use toll roads very much at all.
Some simply avoid toll roads, others live in places where their commute
to work does not use toll roads. Others live out of town and only visit
Sydney occasionally.
Many riders have become so exasperated by fail-to-read Toll Notices,
they now avoid toll roads.

If the RTA succeeds in removing cashless booths, you are being bullied
into REQUIRING an E-Tag account, with all it's fees and free loan for
tolls in advance, deducted from your credit card. i.e. you are required
to lend money to the toll road operator for the tolls you MIGHT use.

The alternative provided by RTA is a mess, it's called an E-Toll Pass,
requiring you to give your credit card details to the RTA

A Harbour Bridge crossing will then cost you $5.25 instead of $3.00 as
long as you can pay this on-line
Without internet access, or without a credit card, a single trip over
the Harbour Bridge will cost you $9.25

This does not help you want to use any other toll roads in Sydney - it
ONLY works on the Harbour Bridge or Harbour Tunnel

Separate arrangements must be made to use EACH OF the Cross City Tunnel,
the Lane Cove Tunnel & M7

If you obtain an RTA E-Tag, you are liable for a Merchant Service fee
for use of your credit card (T&C Clause 3 (h) ), as well as any
administration fees the RTA chooses to levy against your account (Clause
2(a) and 2(b) ) This is in addition to the free loan in the form of your
"Deposit Account"

(100,000 E-tags at "minimum balance" means $2 million in the money
market, earning interest for the deposit holder)
e.g http://www.ubank. com.au/termDepos it/index. html will give 8.5% for 3
months (advertised through www.money.com. au)

The system of E-tolls has been made so complex, expensive and
inconvenient, that E-tags become attractive as the lesser evil, despite
the problems for riders.

Some riders choose to use an E-tag, yet fail-to-read Notices continue to
create an administrative nightmare for many.
The new E-tag holder works on some bikes, but not many
(my sportsbike has nowhere to mount it on the handlebars, as they turn
in slots in the fairing. The magnet is strong enough to wipe out credit
cards, but won't stick to the plastic fuel tank or anywhere else up
front)

Subject: [Delegates] Harbour Bridge Cash Booths

(100,000 E-tags at "minimum balance" means $2 million in the money
market, earning interest for the deposit holder)
e.g http://www.ubank.com.au/termDeposit/index.html will give 8.5% for 3
months (advertised through www.money.com.au)

The system of E-tolls has been made so complex, expensive and
inconvenient, that E-tags become attractive as the lesser evil, despite
the problems for riders.

Some riders choose to use an E-tag, yet fail-to-read Notices continue to
create an administrative nightmare for many.
The new E-tag holder works on some bikes, but not many
(my sportsbike has nowhere to mount it on the handlebars, as they turn
in slots in the fairing. The magnet is strong enough to wipe out credit
cards, but won't stick to the plastic fuel tank or anywhere else up
front)

Hi guys, just got mine from the RTA in Elizabeth Street (near Central).
They said they knew nothing about it until a couple of days ago when
the box arrived! So by the sounds of it there's still some floating
around! See you all on the road:)

Hi folks,

Kudos where kudos is due .

After talking with RTA late last week about the E-Tag pouches only to be
told that they had run out I was not holding my breath.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived home yesterday to find a post pack on the
doorstep containing a Toll Rider pouch with handlebar mounting bracket! The
sender was shown as "E-Toll Business Ops" so it seems there are some left.

As a shameless plug for the product, it appears to be really well made and
the magnet is a feisty sucker so it should stick like the proverbial. A
little elastic strap that retains the zip-pull to stop it bouncing around
and damaging paintwork is a nice touch - designed by bikers I'd suggest.
I'd consider it to be spray resistant but probably not up to a downpour
(though there's nothing to stop you putting the e-tag in a zip-lock bag or
wrapping it in cling-wrap before putting it in the pouch). It's a really
snug fit for the original RTA tag but if you huff and puff you can get the
zip to close. Shouldn't be a problem for the newer, slimmer tags.

You can buy them from the manufacturer for about $45 but the RTA may still
have some so go for it if you are interested!

Cheers,

Peter

Hi all,

I received a Fax from the RTA advising that the RTA is Providing
Motorcycle Riders with Free Pouches to carry Electronic Tollway tags. An
RTA Spokes Person said tag detection had been a problem for motorcycle
riders who had difficulties finding ways to mount them so they could be
read. The Pouch - which is similar to a mobile phone cover is attached
by a magnet to a clamp fitted to the handlebars. The RTA has bought
2500 of the pouches which are being made available free to motorcyclists
who hold Toll Tags. People with the larger E-Way toll tags can get a
pouch free of charge from E-Way.

The Toll Rider tag Pouches are being distributed at the nine motor
registries that sell periodic motorcycle toll passes, Bondi Junction,
Chatswood, Frenchs Forest, Manly, Maroubra, North Sydney and Wynard City
South (Surry Hills) Motorcyclists can also order the Tag Pouches at the
RTA Call Center on 131865

See ya
Noel

EWAY has the bike pouches, I have had mine now for about a month. They offer
two typs of holders and the
tag itself is about a third the size of a car tag.

The two pouches are 1. is an arm band with a velcro strap and the second is
like a small purse with a super magent installed
this then can sit on your tank.

They also gave me a brackit if you want to fit it to the handle bar and the
purse would stick to that.

If you just wanted one it was free otherwise I had to pay 15 bucks to get
the other type as well

Pretty good actually

Rob

I had slightly better luck in that the RTA person that I spoke to actually
knew of the tag pouches. Unfortunately she also said that there were none
left but could provide me with the contact details for the company that
makes them (and sells them for $40).

Despite reading the papers regularly, listening to the news, sitting on a
few bike forums, and scouring the RTAs own website, this email from MCC was
the first that Id heard of the availability of tags yet they were all
gone by 9:30am Friday ..

They took my details too and said theyd follow up .

Cheers,

Peter

Subject: Motorcycle E-Tags

See ya
Noel

Hi Kelly,

There is a great deal of debate around this question. Opinions differ
enormously on who is a good mechanic, and who is a bad one and you'll find
that most of the concerns are based on subjective opinion rather than hard
evidence.

My suggestion is that you select your service mechanic based on price &
location. i.e. Don't choose the cheapest.

Once you have done that, make a list of things you want done to the bike
which might be above the normal service items for that service interval.
Things like tighten frame bolts, lube throttle control, replace brake fluid,
replace coolant, install turbo charger, blah blah, then check each item off
at the time you collect the bike. To do this effectively it is a good idea
to ask a bike-nut mate to have a look at the bike and tell you what you are
likely going to get stung for (e.g. replace sprockets and chain, or tyres
need replacement) BEFORE you take it in for the service. That way you are
less likely to get a nasty surprise when the mechanic starts inspecting the
bike...

Don't bother asking any of the BA guys to do a pre-inspection for you. None
of them have any idea what the hell they are talking about.

<smile>

Mike

PS: i get my bike serviced at Northside Motorcycles, but that doesn't mean
that they are any better or worse than any other place.

Subject: [bikers_anon] Reliable, reputable & reasonable mechanic

Hi guys, I've had my L's since May & my bike since July? I think? and
want to get a service done before rego's due November. Can anyone
recommend a reliable, reputable & reasonably priced mechanic? Somewhere
around the Parramatta area would be ideal but Sydney City or even
Kensington area would suffice. See you all on the road:)

hi peoples,

I intended going on the Snowy Ride again this year.

http://www.snowyride.com.au

If anyone is interested in going and hasn't yet booked their
accomodation, or alternatively is looking for someone to fill bed, I'd
be pleased to arrange something.

Cheers
