This weekend the BA crew are taking a break from an official organised ride.
We are promoting the planned Girls Ride Out ride to Berrima
(http://www.girlsrideout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2
<http://www.girlsrideout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=778> &t=778) on our
upcoming calendar. The group is well organised, relaxed, L&P friendly and
accepting of BA members to join in the ride. I estimate that it has an
equivalent BA 2 bike rating.

My apologies to the group in delaying your ride leader. Ray, my thanks to you
for getting me back home.
It was a unlucky thing to have happen, and having yet to experience a puncture I
can say it is lucky it happen where and when it did.
Hope everyone enjoyed the ride and the spot of brilliant weather (especially
considering the weather during the working week).

Catch you all another time on the road.

Thanks everyone for making a very enjoyable cure for a lurgy today....
The day started with quick wash of the green meenie and meeting Jason (secretay)
to ride to the meet point out at McGraths Hill. I was feeling pretty crappy but
hoped to feel better as the day went on. While going through Galston gorge Jason
had a very bad puncture which was not repairable on the side of the road.
Luckily both he and the yellow peril made it safely to a stop and we put it in a
safe spot. I gave Jason a lift back home and he got his ute to rescue his bike.
Not the best start to the day and bad luck for Jason. Thanks to everyone for so
patiently waiting for me at McGraths Hill. We left about 20mins late with a nice
sized group of 11 bikes. We had a nice run up to a pretty busy halfway house for
a drink and snack stop. Next was the 'fun bits' of the putty road and I was
stoked to have some putty road virgins along for the ride. Another great run was
had to Broke were we fueled up. I loved seeing all the smiles on faces. Ahhh I
think I was
cured from the 'lurgy' by then, awesome..... From there we rode to Wollombi for
lunch and longer than usual wait to get our lunch. Oh well it is the country.
Some of the group headed off for home via Wisemans ferry while the rest of us
rode to Pie in the sky for another quick drink stop before making our seperate
ways home.
Thanks again for the smiles and company. Its great to ride with a good bunch of
competent riders, new and familiar faces and did I say I'm cured : )

Enthusiast ... Kieren Perkins wants drivers to look in their blind
spots.

Mathew Benns
October 26, 2008

ALMOST one-third of motorists would consider switching to a motorcycle
or scooter to save on petrol costs.

A survey conducted for the Motorcycle Council of NSW as part of NSW
Motorcycle Awareness Week also found that more than seven out of 10
people in NSW believe motorcycles and scooters will become even more
popular in future.

The trend towards two-wheel transport has been boosted by a City of
Sydney proposal to give motorbikes free meter parking and cheaper
motorway tolls. The council votes on adopting the strategy next Monday.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said: "More motorists are feeling the pinch
[from] increasing petrol prices and are switching to motorbikes, which
can consume up to four times less fuel than a car, while being easier to
park and easing congestion by taking less space on our roads. The City
... supports the gradual shift away from large, polluting vehicles to
smaller vehicles to complement walking, cycling and public transport."

Motorcycle Council of NSW chairman Guy Stanford said: "The City of
Sydney is creating a transport policy that actively includes motorcycles
and scooters and we congratulate them on this initiative."

The survey, conducted by Newspoll, also found that seven out of 10
people in NSW support motorcyclists paying a lower toll than car
drivers. "Motorcyclists are happy to pay a toll as long as the price is
fair. A car driver does not pay the truck rate for tolls," Mr Stanford
said.

The survey showed the increasing popularity of motorcycles, he said.

"National sales hit an all-time high of 129,966 last year and in this
state alone there are 6200 scooters on the road," he said. "Switching
from a family sedan to a scooter for daily activities would reduce the
petrol bill by about a third, so it's no coincidence that the petrol
hike and traffic congestion in Sydney have increased demand for two
wheels," he said.

Former Olympic swimmer and keen motorcyclist Kieren Perkins is an
ambassador for Motorcycle Awareness Week. Perkins, 35, stressed the need
for other road users to watch out for motorcycles and scooters. "Look in
your blind spots and remember that we're all sons, daughters, husbands,
wives, fathers and mothers out there," he said.

Today the NSW Motorcycle Council will hold its annual Breakfast Torque
at Loftus Oval, Loftus from 8am to 11am with free breakfast, riding
demonstrations and a safety gear fashion parade.

this subject? Delete now. It's not in my interest to send emails to people
who do not want to receive them so if you want off my elist please let me
know.

The Make Motorcycling Cheaper Rally will be at Parliament House in Melbourne
on Wednesday, November 12, 2008.

Petitions to abolish the unfair $56 a year TAC tax on riders will be handed
to an MP to present to the Parliament. One petition is paper, one is online.

http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/abolish-tac-antibike-tax.html

The rally will be from noon to 1 pm with speeches from 12.30 pm. It is a
sitting day so Parliament House will be full of MPs and media. Other issues
will be raised but the primary is to abolish the TAC tax. You could save
yourself $56 a year in your lunch break.

It's a work day so many won't be able to attend, but, you can encourage
others to come, you can sign the online petition and you can get a paper
petition signed by family, friends and workmates. Paper petition sheets can
be emailed or posted out at no cost.

And don't forget the BLOOD CHALLENGE begins on December 1 in NSW, the ACT,
Vic and Tas. The Challenge runs to the end of February. Last year riders
beat police. Call 13 14 95 for a blood bank near you. Giving blood saves

The Sydney City Council Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy is an
important moment for motorcyclists.

Not only does it place scooters and motorcycles within a transport
strategy rather than a safety strategy, but it can also be used as a
template for other councils. This means that they can quickly and
easily implement a policy with little work required on their own part.
It removes a major hurdle and will hopefully result in the adoption of
similar policies throughout NSW local coucnils.

Once the strategy is implemented in the Sydney City Council area it
will be time for riders to lobby their own local council for a similar
strategy/policies.

The Sydney City Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy was passed by Council
last night

Well done to all riders who have assisted this proces

This has been a long process for the MCC of NSW, with initial efforts
dating back to 2003.
In late 2004, after lobbying by the MCC of NSW, the City of Sydney hired
Liz DeRome to conduct consultation with riders in an effort to deal with
issues under the "Road Safety" heading.
At a public consultation meeting in 2005, arranged by Delegates of the
MCC, issues such as parking and security were raised. (Thanks here to
John Littler of Ausmoto)
(in fact, the issues raised are remarkably similar to the Strategy
passed last night)
With no provision for motorcycles as a separate class of road user, the
"road safety" focus was too narrow and the "road user amenity" issues
failed to proceed, although road safety initiatives did.

Continued lobbying by the MCC of NSW attempted to raise the parking
issues to the level of "Transport Policy".
This was a difficult period, requiring a considerable amount of contact
time with both political and administration arms of the City of Sydney
( Particular thanks here to Simon Disney of Hawkesbury-Nepean and
Clinton Hayes of BAPMUG for tireless and high quality work)

To their credit, administration management of the SCC saw the failure
to include motorcycles as a "gap" in their overall Transport Policy and
started the arduous process of creating a transport policy that actively
included motorcycles . This was clearly at odds with NSW State Transport
planning, which regards motorcycles as "vehicles", where motorcycles are
treated simply as "small cars", with no provision for the specific
safety or amenity needs of this class of transport. Pressures against
this process usually come from administrative inertia, resisting ANY
change, but also from bicycle and pedestrian lobbies who tend to be
narrow in their view and see motorcycles and scooters as "competitors"
for road space.

The SCC saw the need to provide Transport Planning that was inclusive
and could regulate a balance between all modes of Transport.

The Sydney City Council hired Peter Thoeming, a well known motorcycle
magazine editor to compile issues and prepare a draft motorcycle and
scooter policy.

The City of Sydney has shown independent thinking, rather than caving-in
to big political party dogma or noisy pressure groups.
This process of reason is to be applauded.

The City of Sydney is the FIRST jurisdiction in Australia to create a
Transport Policy that specifically includes motorcycles and scooters.
In debate, some councillors used the interesting terminology of "active
positive discrimination" to counter what they saw as "traditional
negative discrimination" in relation to motorcycles.

The Policy has become more useful as a result of the public consultation
process.
Sure, it ain't perfect, but it will vastly improve life for motorcycle
riders and provides a base or foundation upon which future improvements
may be built.

The Policy passed unanimously

We congratulate the City of Sydney on this initiative.

Riders, we have reached the first step in equity.
Celebrate.

We are all road users and we all share the road.

State governments have yet to wake up to this, but the biggest local
Council in Australia has done so.

All,

With a lot of help from my work colleagues, we managed to contribute around
$5k to the overall funds raised.

With perfect warm weather again, the lovely Tamsin lead 10 keen riders
through the quiet sweeping roads to Oberon. On the way, somehow ??, I
managed to lose one rider (Carl, please let us know your ok) before we
even reached the Bells Line of Road? The search party gave up and we
continued the ride and had a pleasant day out - it was warm, the roads
were perfect, the company good and to finish off watching the MotoGP
was a superb way to spend any Sunday.

Thanks to everyone that turned up and look forward to seeing you on the
Putty - if anyone has suggestions for the next ride calendar, please
let us know asap
Cheers

Dear Delegates

All good things must come to an end - maybe!
We want all Clubs to know that WIMA will not be running any more Pink
Ribbon Rides. Next Sunday will be our last ride. It has taken over our
lives and we now want to spend more time on our Club.

A couple of years ago an attempt to expand the Pink Ribbon Ride
committee didn't work. As much as they wanted to, work commitments and
other reasons meant most of those people couldn't continue on the
committee.

This time we are asking for expressions of interest from Clubs only. If
we get any offers we will organise a meeting of reps from those Clubs
just to pass on what information we have eg about major sponsors and
supporters, the website, the bank account, etc. They can then decide if
they want to make the commitment. We think a Club will be a better
option because members will be more easily replaced if circumstances
change and someone can't continue. Insurance cover to indemnify the
volunteer organisers is also a good idea.

If no Club comes forward, or is willing to take it on after the meeting,
we will have to shut up shop. Let's make it a good one for the sake of
the cause we are all supporting.

Don't forget Lord Animal will be our celebrity ribbon cutter.

Regards
Lynn Muir & Marg Parker

PRR Committee

Track Day at Eastern Creek on Sat, 11th Oct was, as always, a blast -
we had a small group and we all seemed to enjoy burning the rubber on
the tyres without mishap or incident - perfect weather helped and Andre
you were missed but with a good reason. Always nice to see the Bikers
Anon banner flying too.

Sunday, 12th Oct was our learner bike ride through the Nasho to
Stanwell Park - again a small group with one irish learner who actually
learned quite a lot on the day - the soccer match never really
eventuated but the weather was perfect and the company good. - Suzuki
reigns yet again.
