Hi Guy(s)'n'Gals

Guess what: The phone rings a minute ago and it's some bloke on his
cellphone who introduces himself as XYZ from the RTA on the Northern
Road on his way to Wiseman's Ferry Road to find that spot I've
complained about!!!

I'm so shocked I've gotta grab a cuppa tea!

Phil

PS. Left the email thread intact, as it's all related ...

Bewdy!

OK, follow through, take it on and pester the RTA until you get a proper
answer.

Anyone else out there been through this section lately?

With RTA, you have to hit a bit harder. Digital pics and explanations of
specific location (power poles have numbers and are useful for this, as
is a GPS location) and requests for responses on a series of points like
- when was this road last resurfaced?
- what is the traffic volume using the road?
- is this road condition acceptable under your guidelines?
- if so, which guidelines and please attach a copy of the relevant
section
- when do you plan to resurface this section?
- what is the surface grip available over this section and by what
method was it tested?
- when was the latest grip test done?
- what are the guidelines for acceptable grip test values for this road?
- what are the guidelines for acceptable surface condition with regard
to :-
         (a) surface irregularities
         (b) potholes and the percentage of the road repaired
         (c) variations from level across the road surface
         (d) longitudinal pavement "pushing" by heavy trucks
- do you use simple guidelines or are you required to adhere to an
Australian Standard?

You can break this into a series of emails or letters and keep firing
them, with digipics attached and deal with one specific aspect each
time.

They hate this sort of detail and hate even more, the specific questions
and each one goes on file and adds to the grief on that one spot,
increasing their exposure under their risk management insurance rules.
If an injury case goes to court, these sort of records are obtained by
legal counsel under FOI, so it serves us all well to lodge them.

With each specific question, which they are bound to answer, they have
to inform you and the last thing they want is an informed public making
complaint, so use each one to extract more information and generally
make it easier to fix the road than continue to answer the emails and
letters.

Do not take no, or some vague time in the future, extract a specific
date and then diary it and follow it up.

Copy us all in on the answers and we will help you respond.

The trick is to keep up the complaint without appearing as a silly
duffer, by asking specific and fair questions as well as explaining the
problem for a single track vehicle which relies heavily on small
available traction.

Ultimately.you want to know if they understand the reason why you are
complaining, that they understand the road is dangerous and you want to
have some specific maintenance schedule type information, so if the
schedule is lagging, it has to be admitted and you want to know when it
will be repaired.

Can be a great source of amusement.

But a general waffle about "I don't like it" gives no specifics and
hence they have no specific complaint to respond to and hence don't have
to do anything.

Guy

Big thanks to S & K for a seriously well-organised and thoroughly
enjoyable weekend away!

My departure from the group on the return journey (to detour via
Bathurst) was well rewarded by 3 great laps of the Mt Panorama
circuit (albeit at a rather low speed).

Thanks to everyone who attended! I'm a definite starter for the next
one!

Cheers all,

Hi BA Funsters

Got back to my place after leaving the heights pub and sat down with
Kath and a couple of drinks, both of us couldn't help reflecting and
laughing at so many moments of what was a really fabulous weekend
away with each other and our trusty two wheeled weapons.

The photo's will tell the story.....

So what needs to be said is, to those who took on this weekend with
the necessary tenacity, grit and determination in the face of a crap
weather forecast, THANK YOU TO ALL for making this one outstanding
and memorable couple of days!

So with that out of the way - everyone assumed we would be get pissed
on so bu#lsh*t to the Dept of Meteorology!

Already dreaming up the next one, see you at the commitee meeting on
the 10th.

Cheers Steve / Kath

My understanding is that Aust Post Management are
pushing for 7hr delivery - in other words the mail
will be sorted at night by sorters and then posties
front to work to then deliver for 7 hours straight -
yeh right!! Far from a 'Safe' job!
This is what I believe the CEPU is fighting against.

Actually Aust Post were recently voted as the 'Worst
Employer/Manager' or similar - which probably says it
all.

Anyway, voting is currently underway and Aust Post are
employing such tactics as to get Aust Post employees
to run for the Union, thereby getting everything Aust
Post way.
Would you believe employees are receiving phone calls
from the delegates (at home or on their mobiles), SMS
and several letters by way of mail.

It was a great job a few years ago, but now it is
nothing but miserable. From the group of posties I
know, they are dropping like flies to get a fair go
elsewhere and to find a job where 'you enjoy going to
work' (well as much as one can anyway - would much
prefer to be riding)!

Yep, was a splendidly organised run. Thanks Steve and Kath (and
ChrisT, who couldn't help himself).
The 'not so leisurely' group generally had a good ride to Mudgee too -
unless they were behind me. FYI, the oil being burned by the 'Trannie'
was fresh Valvoline. In the end, it only consumed 600ml for the whole
trip... within Honda's oil consumption guidelines for first model
TransAlps!
While the rest had lunch at the Comet Inn, I made my way to Woodford
to some friends' place with a little adventurous detour via Lake
Lyall, the Hampton wind generators, the fast and smooth section of the
Jenolen Caves Rd and the (not so) Great Western Hwy. Riding down the
spur, from the highway at Lithgow, past Lake Lyall, the high side
winds fairly keeps one's attention on the steering! Spectacular run
though over some very steep and rolling country to Old Bowenfels (an
locality that is nothing more than an intersection these days). Left
turn from Old Bow., the road to Hampton is 18km of the most patched
and potholed road I have ever seen (used to be just as bad around
Tarana too, until resurfaced a couple of years ago). The Trannie took
it all in it's stride though (big front wheel, high profile tyres and
long travel suspension). Then, the Jenolan Caves Rd is mostly smooth,
but the side winds are a concern. Minimal traffic here and up the
mountains to Mt. Victoria resulted in rider nirvana. Ah bliss.
Heated hand grips were great too!

Understand that once you get out of the office and start delivering it is still
a fun job, you just don't get paid very much for it any more and the pressure
applied by management is disheartening most of the time.

Unfortunately they are undertaking a program at the moment to get ride of as
many bikes as possible and replace them with backpacks! This is part of the
reason for the rolling 3 month contracts.

There is no denying it is a dangerous job, especially on the transport legs (a
postie bike can do about 75 Kph on the flat) but that is made up for by
community feel of talking to and getting to know people out on your run.

Give it a go and see how you like it, and in five years your pay increment will
have lifted to a slightly less offensive level ;-)

Cheers,
Peter (ex-VFR)

Despite gloomy weather forecasts, the only things to hit our visors were
bugs and glare from the road!

The trip up was very well organised (thanks Steve!), with the laid-back
crew taking it extremely easy all the way up and the alternative speedy
route actually making it to Sofala, and on. After a day of beautiful wide
corners and a distinct lack of other traffic, we regrouped at the pub
(where else?) and stayed there pretty much all night - apart from a brief
moment when we checked into our cozy 'villas' - declaring ourselves to be
the Vespa Overtakers Owners Club. "Mid-life Crisis" was the name of the
band that night, but after checking out the talent on the dance floor we
decided to air mail Chinese take-away orders and rude requests in German
to the girls on the table next door instead. The local wine wasn't too
bad, but we never did make it to a winery :)

Sunday's clouds looked a bit iffy, especially after hearing rain all
night, but the only casualty was Liam's Ducati which had had a bit too
much to drink and seemed to think SJ's SV was a bar it needed to prop up.
The rainclouds ran away while we were having breakfast though, so after
finally finding the local Mobil (Steve's Shadow didn't like the Caltex
offerings, so no-one else was about to try it) we set off with easily
accessible binbags in luggage rather than over leathers. More lovely wide
roads on the way back to Lithgow, but it was BLOODY FREEZING!!!!! I think
I'll buy some therml gloves before next winter.. and then off to the Comet
Inn at Hartley Vale for lunch and hot chocolate - yum! Our last stop,
after losing a few bods off visiting friends, was the pub near the turn
off for Freeman's Reach where Chris showed us his snazzy shots for the
weekend (Grant, I think you're safe this time!), and finally it was time
to hit the traffic on Windsor Rd again. Yay, home sweet home.

But all in all it was a fantastic weekend, even if the police seemed to be
unfairly targeting Chris with his bright orange leathers and EPA-compliant
exhaust *cough* Huge thanks to Steve and Kath for organising everything,
and to everyone else for providing drunken entertainment to the locals on
Saturday night :)

Soph

p.s. So when's the next weekend away?? This month's committee meeting is
Thursday 10 July - if you have any ideas for day or weekend rides, either
come along or email the almighty ride coordinator: christ@...

Just a quick email to thank everyone who gave me info on tyres for my
GPX250! I needed some before the Mudgee trip due to extreme squaring of
the last set, so the speedy responses were very gratefully received..
unfortunately I didn't give myself enough time to finally try doing
burn-out though *sigh*

I ended up with Pirelli MT65s (a combination of advice and what was
actually available), and am happy to report that they're great :)

Being a long term employee my pay is significantly more than the new guys get
paid ( I get shift penalties, allowances and am on the highest pay increment)
but I still want out!

Guys get killed on the job....... On Friday the 30th of May, a workmate and
good friend was killed will rideing his postie bike back from his run to the
local post office. A van turned acorss in front of him on Castle Hill Rd, the
van had a bullbar, he was killed almont instantly. He is survived by his wife
and (at the time) 3 week old daughter. He is sorely missed by everyone in our
office.

Peter
wouldnt have anything to do with the shithouse pay

you also forgot to mention the guys that have gotten killed whilst on the job

really think its worth it for $26Kpa ???

wouldnt have anything to do with the shithouse pay

the pay they offer is more like a part time job wage

the only good thing about it is that you start early finish early

i got rejected because of a previous injury and they think it might get
aggrevated
i looked at it and thought ah shit money but its a job , and they are doing 3
month contracts , so thought yep 3 months is plenty
enough

you also forgot to mention the guys that have gotten killed whilst on the job

I am amazed at how many people there are out there applying for postie jobs.
Speaking as someone who has been a postie for more than 6 years.... DON'T DO

The question you have to ask yourself is why are these jobs being advertised
three and four times a week for the last 6 months?

At our office we find that most of the trainees last only a few weeks before
they walk. It used to be a great job but the culture has changed and the great
atmosphere has been destroyed. Of the long term staff in our office (44 posties)
20 have left in the last 18 months.

I am currently off work with a bad back injury, but I am hoping that I can find
something else rather than go back when I have finally recovered.

If you are thinking about becoming a postie, try talking to some of us and find

Australia Post is rapidly becomming.

I too am sorry to have missed out on what must have been a great ride with
the weather being like it has been, sunny and not too wet. The bike is at
the dealer's for its first service. I also applied for a postie's job and
was granted an interview because I'm so sick of being stuck inside dear old
Harvey Norman all day, but backed out when they told me the salary; 14 bucks
an hour? At least you get a lot of the day to get out and do things but I
reckon you'd need to have another part time job to pay the bills.

Swedish woman plans to climb Everest on motorcycle
June 27 2003
A Swedish woman hopes to climb Mount Everest on a motorcycle in a bid to beat
the unofficial world record for the highest altitude on a bike, Swedish daily
Dagens Nyheter reported yesterday.
The current record is 5,250 metres above sea level, according to Swedish biker
Annie Seel.
"Up to base camp at 5,100 metres there is a rocky path. If a yak can make it up
there then a motorcycle should be able to as well. But then there's about
another 150 metres of glacier. That could be difficult," Seel said.
Seel made a name for herself last year when she completed the gruelling
Paris-Dakar rally on her motorcycle with a broken hand.
"The more crazy things like this you do, the more you want to do," she said,
adding: "If you never get to fulfil your dreams you will be unhappy."

Her adventure is scheduled to start on August 6

What was that?:
"Fancy a ... run to Mudgee on Saturday? Some tipple at one of the
wineries perhaps? The Bikers Anon .... experience?"

Two groups - two routes - two paces. Late start. Early finish.
Fabulous town for the overnight stay.

Well, with the several late vacancies, the Mudgee overnighter is a
GIFT to those who couldn't/wouldn't/shouldn't commit earlier on. (Or
for those who should be 'commited'. ;-)
If your interested in coming - please respond today!
