And Rob Reins suggestion of just throwing 'em into the machine... Black clothes

The problem with leather is its a great vessel in which to grow bacteria.
Just like smelly shoes or feet they need to be periodicly disinfected to kill
the resident bacteria.
There are many feet and shoe disinfectents out there for exactly this purpose.
I use a cream called "Canesten" on me smelly feet and it works great.
Might be worth trying it on ya hands and placing hands in for-mentioned gloves.
Another trick is to use foramlin. Maybe hard to get.
A few drops on a cotton ball and place in the gloves.
I used to do this for my boots and it worked really well.

good luck

     I have a pair of lovely Teknik gloves. They smell like something that
     crawled out of a septic pit somewhere in Bombay.

     I'm afraid to wear them, since the last time I shook someone's hand
     after wearing these gloves the poor sod contracted SARS, leprosy and
     the Plague, which dropped them dead on the spot.

     The other day they marched into the living room under their own power,
     stared me straight in the eye and said "A solution must be found for
     cleaning us."

     I tried making a light mixture of Detol + water in a spray bottle and
     attacking them with that, but that didn't help. I attacked them with a
     'disinfecting spray' I found at the supermarket, but I realised too
     late it was lavender scented. So now I have gloves that smell like
     lavender, detol and diarrhea in equal proportions.

     I haven't been able to find these gloves again, and I really like them
     (apart from the smell). Before I turf them, does anyone have a magic
     solution for making them clean once more? I thought about getting
     Father Paddy down the road to exorcise them, but the gloves refuse to
     visit the church.

     Regards,

     Luke.

Hi all,

I ended up forcibly subduing my gloves with a rubber mallet and
sticking them in a solution of warm soapy water. I'll leave them there
overnight and see what happens when they come out. They will have
fallen to pieces or they will smell nice - either way the world will
have been rid of a great evil.

Thanks to everyone who offered useful advice, techniques and products
to try!

My hands are fine! The gloves have been through regular use for about
six months, including probably half a dozen track days and two race
meetings. The latter events will have done it - when I'm nervous my
hands sweat profusely ;)

Regards,

Luke.

Frontal Identification for Motorcycles

A feasibility study is under way to develop a fitting to suit a wide range
of motorcycles. This will be followed by a program of environmental testing,
and it is expected that by mid-2004 a system will be in place to enable
frontal identification to be fitted to all motorcycles.

The Australian Motorcycle Council (AMC) expressed concerns that no clear
case had been established for the safety benefits of frontal identification
and that it would cost motorcyclists an estimated $4.5 million to comply.
The AMC put the view that the contribution of speed to motorcycle crashes
may be overestimated in road crash statistics, and that the increase in
motorcycle crashes may be related to an increase in exposure.

It was pointed out that the relationship between speed and crash risk has
been the subject of considerable research, and small increases in travel
speeds have been shown to result in a rapid escalation of crash risks. Speed
enforcement for motorcycles is undermined by the lack of frontal
identification and motorcycle crash rates have risen alarmingly in recent
years.

It was noted that Vicroads was consulting closely with the Victorian
Motorcycle Council on this issue.

Don't forget the bacteria & mould zapping power of the Sun.
when they are dry, put them in direct sun - five minutes min. each side, 1/2
hour each side if overcast. The ultra violet rays will stop the little buggers
straight away  and it's free!

Some general gloves and leather tips:
After rain or a hot, humid, sweaty ride (of one's bike ;-) .... hang it up
preferably in a shaded and breezy place to dry thoroughly. Don't use hot sun nor
heaters for drying purposes. the leather will stiffen and shrink from forced
drying.

Ordinary, non-perfumed soap (liquid, traditional soap-bar or soap flakes for
laundry) should be the strongest type of cleanser used. Shower gels or gentle
shampoos should be OK too. Anything stronger is very risky... and unnecessary
with leather.

Hi Luke,

I think I suggested the following in Another Forum (?)... was it you?

Anyway, grab a spray bottle of Febreez from the supermarket. It's a
bit hard to find lately but Coles and Woolies usually stock in the
cleaners/washing aisle.

This is purely a fabric odour masking agent. ... it does not clean,
nor disinfect, but is technically superior at masking smells. The
natty lil molecules latch onto the bad dudes and lock 'em up.

TRY TO REMOVE THE SMELL FIRST:-
Maybe start with a small bucket of vinegar/warm water and SOAK the
bastards over night. Yes, get that slutty smelly leather sopping WET!

Then rinse a few times, roll in newspaper to remove moisture. Then
wrap in more newspaper or towels and leave in dry shady spot. DO NOT
TURN INSIDE OUT.

It'll take a few days to dry, but no harm done. Once dry, get some
leather dressing on them (dont be bashful with the lube, they'll love
it... remember (quote)"Whatdya mean there's no time for lube!!??
THERE'S ALWAYS TIME FOR LUBE!"

By this time, maybe the febreez won;t be needed. I would have thought
a good soakin overnight should fix anything.

What the *&^*%^% did you do to these gloves to get them so smelly to
start with? Do you have leprosy of the hands or pus-filled
carbunkles ? Seek professional help :-) venienti occurrite morbo

The answer is YES they can, as they are authorised by the EPA to do so by
"The Protection Of The Environment Operations Act, 1997"
Visit the MotorCycle Council of NSW web site to read more on this issue.
http://www.mccofnsw.org.au/a/80.html

    ~~~
Why not take your case to court?
In a recent identical case (again with Kuringai HWY Patrol [officers Boyd &
Walsh]) In this case the magistrate saw it as strange that motorcyclists
should be fined for not having a sticker and not for excessive noise which
is what the stickers are supposed to ensure against! The fine was dropped
and no court costs issued. This pissed the police off and the Two EPA nerds
who also fronted.
    ~~~

The EPA law regarding after market exhausts is;
Clause 19 of Regulations drawn from the Protection of the Environment Act
19 Motor cycle noise control equipment to be labelled
(1)A person must not cause or permit a motor cycle to be used on a road or
road related area unless:
(a) in the case of a motor cycle fitted with noise control equipment
supplied by the motor cycle manufacturer (or equipment that is identical to
that equipment) the motor cycle complies with clause 39.2 (marking
requirements) and clause 39.3 (labelling requirements) of Australian Design
Rule 39/00 External Noise of Motor Cycles, or
(b) in any other case the noise control equipment fitted to the motorcycle
is clearly and indelibly marked with the following:
(i) the manufacturer's name,
(ii) the model of the motor cycle for which it is designed,
(iii) the noise rating information referred to in clause 39.3.1.4 of
Australian Design Rule 39/00 External Noise of Motor Cycles.

Kerb crawlers and boy racers face lifelong driving ban
By Philip Johnston, Home Affairs Editor
(Filed: 31/12/2003)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2003/12/31/nkerb31.xml

Kerb crawlers and other drivers who cause a nuisance face a lifetime ban
under new laws to curb anti-social behaviour. Courts in England and Wales
will be able to use disqualification powers contained in legislation
passed by Parliament nearly four years ago.

People who abandon vehicles or who terrorise communities by driving in
parks and wasteland also face tougher penalties.

Under the Powers of Criminal Courts Act 2000, courts can disqualify a
driver for as long as they see fit. From tomorrow they will be able to
remove licences indefinitely.

Hazel Blears, the Home Office minister, said: "This new measure will help
put a stop to boy racers driving recklessly in parks and housing estates
and kerb crawlers harassing and intimidating women." She added: "Kerb
crawling and the antisocial use of cars can blight local communities,
causing misery and distress to people going about their daily lives.

"We are determined to deal with this growing problem and are giving courts
the powers to ban drivers who use their cars to commit antisocial
behaviour."

Hi All,

A big hello to all the people I met today, and a special thankyou to
you all for waiting for me. The CB250 isn't able to accelerate as
quick as the rest of you and this put me behind a couple of times.
Again, thanks to Sean/Shaun (sp?) for waiting up for me or coming
back to find out where I was. I turned back at Albion Park and
reversed the trip - through Mt Keira, the twisties and then through
the RNP. I hope the rest of the trip for you all was kind and
exciting!

Cheers!

G'day Iain,

Close but no bannana ...sorry I'm in Perth.

Funny story.. I remember "racing" a bloke in a commodore who was
sitting up my date and giving me the shits when he pulled up beside
me and glared at me ...so gave it the berries and got away from
him ... until he turned on his siren.....and there being a warrant
for a young bloke of the same name... fortunately we had a different
Date of Birth and home address....and I was on my way to a Kids with
Cancer Xmas party so I managed to sweet talk my way out of it....

Have fun - stay safe and stay alert

Andrew
Perth

P.S. if it looks like there are any cheques in the mail...let me know
and I\ll give you my address... HAHAHAHH

Hey Andrew,

I saw your name on the bikers anon list, and wondered if you happen
to be the "Andrew Cox" who's mail is still being delivered to my new
apartment in Redfern - actually, theres only one bit of mail so far,
but if is junk mail from BikeBiz, and the name/bikes connection seems
to be quite a coincidence ;-)

Merry xmas!

   Gday Tim, Their arnt normaly any weekend rides on the ride callender, but
often member who are free on weekdays will post an email advising of a weekday
ride they are planning often at short notice. Just keep an eye on here, sooner
or latter one will turn up.
