This isn't spam. It's about motorbike & scooter crash data from a bike
insurer seemingly in conflict with Victorian Governemt figures. Not
interested? Delete now. If you want off my email list please say so.
*************************************************
On April 11, 2002, I was the Motorcycle Riders' Association rep at the Road
Safety Reference Group meeting at VicRoads. The RSRG is a large committee of
various road safety stakeholders including the MRA and Police.

Previous wisdom had it that 60 to 70 % of multi-vehicle crashes involving a
motorcycle, the rider was the victim of driver error. The Victorian
Government put out driver awareness leaflets on this. Remeber the LOOK BIKE
campaign?

When a rider crashes after a car swervs, but does not contact the bike, or
when the driver fails to stop, or leaves the crash scene with the
motorbike/scooter rider (and sometimes pillion) bloodied on the ground, the
crash usually enters the data banks as a 'single vehicle accident". Very bad
science.

On April 11 the Police rep handed round copies of a document titled
"Motorcyclist Accident Reprentation (2001)" Quote: "80% of all fatal
crashes - motorcyclist at fault." Naturally the minutes do not show how
strongly I protested this rubbish. These kind of rubbery figures are often
used to justify restrictive laws and taxes, like the TAC $50 anti-bike tax.

Today's Herald Sun. Melbourne.
Ashley Gardner. Transport Reporter. Page 4.

"DRIVERS BLAMED FOR MOST BIKE CRASHES.
Two-thirds of motorbike accidents involving other vehicles in Victoria are
not caused by the motorcyclists, insurance figures show. Motorcyclists were
at fault in only 32% of accidents involving other vehicles in the 3 years to
2003 analysis by Swann Insurance shows.

Transport Accident Commission figures show 39 motorcyclists died in Victoria
last year. Those deaths made up 12% of the road toll yet motorcyclists
represent just 3% of registered vehicles. Of the 39 deaths last year, 27
involved other vehicles.

Swann Insurance general manager Duncan Brian said yesterday "These figures
confirm what motorcycle riders have been saying for some time - that
motorcyclists generally are not to blame for multiple vehicle crashes. The
figiures send a clear message to all motorists to be aware of motorcyclists
(and scooterists)."

Considering the discriminatory TAC $50 per bike, per year tax on top of
registrantion and insurance isn't it about time for a major driver
awarebness campaign? Email the Minister for Transport Peter Batchelor
peter.batchelor@... and cc the Shadow Minister Terry
Mulder terence.mulder@... .

Loads of pictures where taken on the KV w/e, let's see your BEST shots, but
first...

>>>>>> Some guidelines for posting pictures. <<<<<<

"Don't post Bitmap [.BMP] files" They are uncompressed and are not suitable
for posts. Change them to JPG's before you post (see xsqueezeme below)

"Size does matter!"
Don't post pictures unless they are of the correct DATA and SCREEN size.
Members with modem connections may have to wait for 30 minutes to see a full
size image and most of use will end up with pictures that are much larger
than our screens.

"What size and how to resize?"
We have found that the Data (file) size should not be greater than 80Kb per
image and 800*600 Screen size. I use "XSQUEEZEME" from www.somewareonthe.net
to resize all my images. PaintShop also does resizing.

The monitor is still a blurry this morning and there is pain
eminating from the back of my head. I must have had a drink on the
weekend. From what I can remember it was whole lot of fun. Fast,
freindly and fluid. Did I mention fluid. Colourful, the people and
the fluid. Especially that blue stuff.
Hughsy. LEGEND. THANKS FOR ALL THE TROUBLE YOU WENT TO. I had a
great weekend. Almost worth this 2 day hang over. The roads the
bikes the sounds the people. It doesn't get any better. If I may
indulge myself further a special thanx to those people that added
that extra something to my weekend, Phil, Doug, Dave, Mark, Susy,
Peggy and Holly.

I know that this is a bit late, but ohh well, better a bit late than never.

If you do get a crack like this in your fairing, i've heard a good stopmeasure
until you fix it is to get a 2-3mm drill bit and drill
through the crack at the point right at the point whereit is splitting, this
should stop it getting any worse until you can get the
fairing patched.

Cheers,

G'day all, hope you're all well.
How good is Rossi? Loved watching the back wheels smoke up, the sliding
corners - well worth the late night. Sete's going alright too.
Jackie's story sounded familiar - mine was low speed (thankfully) an at least
the guy helped me pick the bike up. Have now decided to grow muscles after
hearing tigerstripes' misfortune. What a prick - did he expect it to remain
upright in a crash? Hope you're back on the road soon, Jackie.
So the problem now is the crack in the fairing. How to fix? It seems to have
lengthened this morning on the way to work so I need to fix it before it costs
me even more.
Thanks in advance for any help, I reckon BA is one of the best sources of info
for biking matters. (Especially when you need help!)
   Cheers,
   Chris

:-) I also want to thank Hughsy and Kath for organising another
fantastic weekend way xoxox and thank you all that came along,
special thanks to the beautiful 'funky dancer' corner markers, tail
enders and ride leaders.

I just have one complaint: hahaha my gorgeous friend Lou forgot to
bring along some handcuffs, so we had to let Chris T free all
evening (ouch!) what a noise man he is eh? ... hahaha he made me
miss Robyn (aka Ducati Lass) who seems to be the only one to make
him quiet hehehehehe (Just kidding Chris hehehehe we love you)

That lil miss singer 'Sam' was a star, I look forward to get hold of
her album later this year.

The trip down was awesome; the trip back for instance could have
been much better if that stupid hangover didn't last for so long
hehehehe.

I had a great time and I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves as
much as I did.

Ladies & Gents,

Thanks Hughsey! Thanks for organising a great weekend away.

Thanks everyone for coming, especially those who had very early starts
to make it on time.

Thanks Steve for cooking up an ab-fab roast on the night and a well
needed fry up in the morning.

Thanks everyone for being 'gentle' to Sam, the entertainer! I'm fairly
sure she really wasn't sure what the hell to expect and I'm sure
that's what we delivered.

Thanks to the respective ride leaders who got up front and thanks to
the tail enders who hung back. Thanks to the other (dancing) corner
markers. Oh and thanks Paul for not hitting me, awfully kind of you.

Nice idea, but in many 3rd world countries, any bike over 250cc is illegal.

Also, I ended up having surgery in a 3rd world hospital as the result of a
bike stack earlier this year ... the treatment I received was awesome, given
the resources the local hospital had (i.e. almost none) ... but still, I
wouldn't recommend it!

Ditto to Luke on that one.

No back protector will prevent torsional (twisting) or compressive
(squashing of vertebrae and discs) type injuries to the spine. You would
need to be in some massive frame to do that.

They will, however, minimise initial impact force (vertebral spinous
protrusions being 'slapped' into the tar) and minimise abrasion and foreign
objects entering through the back. The initial 'slapping impact is the worst
for bones. For example, I have slightly softer armour in my leathers so the
padding absorbs some of the initial impact, rather than just immediately
transferring the shock through to elbow joints and shoulders etc.

A good idea if you do decide to purchase a back protector is to get on that
has a supportive elastic kidney band as well (just ask any of the old
motocrossers about having kidneys shaken around).

As with all safety information, at least if given some valid information as
to the purpose and abilities of the item, then an informed choice can be
made.

I always wear a back protector; I feel naked without it.

I've had several fairly high speed accidents on the track and some low
speed prangs on the road. All of them involved some degree of sliding
on my back, which is an experience I would not like to repeat without
   a back protector.

Saying a back protector does not guard against *all* kinds of spinal
injury does not provide an excuse not to wear one. If you're doing
sports riding, you should take all reasonable measures to protector
yourself. Good leathers, helmet, gloves, boots, and back protector are
   a must.

After you've binned the bike and sent yourself through the grass
Shinya Nakano style, you'll want to be wearing this stuff. Even if you
break something, which can never be completely guarded against, you
will feel a lot better knowing that it could have been much worse
   without your protective gear.

I'm not making a statement about wearing this stuff all the time; I'm
just saying that a back protector should be part of your plan to
protect *as much* of you as possible if you decide to do that.

   Rgz,

   Luke.

Good answer
A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a
motorcycle, when he spotted a world-famous heart surgeon in his shop.
The heart surgeon was waiting for the service manager to come take a
look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey Doc
can I ask you a question?"

The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic
working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his
hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I also can
open hearts, take valves out, fix 'em, put in new parts and when I
finish this will work just like a new one. So how come I get a
pittance and you get the really big money, when you and I are doing
basically the same work?"

The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the
mechanic... "Try doing it with the engine running!"

"looking for a mechanic.."

That shop has been lookiing for a mechanic for 3 years. A friend who
purchased her bike from there prefers to ride across Sydney than her
local shop any more.

I guess no mechanic can put up with workign there if expected to do
more than the customer requires and have to put up with an argument
over payment and unauthorised work.

As for withholding the bike because of being "illegal" or
unroadworthy.... well, that's just theft. UNBELIEVEABLE! that any
dealer believes they have that right to retain property.

The only grounds for retaining property is if the customer does not
pay.

Fortunately they are not a Triumph dealer :-)

PS. Best workshop = my garage. Highly recommended it to myself,

For those that haven't seen the Jun/Jul Motorcycle News.. The BEST
bike in the Superbike class was the GSX-R 750... Can't argue with
that. Beat the Ducati 999s and Aprilia RSV1000R... How cool is that?

G'day Brodes,
After reading your story, all I had to come up with was, what the
hell is a dealer doing lecturing the customer?... This reminds me of
some Sienfeld episode but anyway, the dealer does what you pay him
for and nothing more, they are at your command because you are
paying and if they cant' recognize that, then of course you will
find someone that will..
Don't take his shit - You're paying - so pay somewhere else...
My 2c worth.
Cheers Doug.

robbing the coffers of millions of dollars in speeding fines!

This technology will not stop fines that is the scary bit. The GPS will
monitor where you are at any one time. It will then feed back your position
and speed to a central database from there it will calculate from your
position what the relevant speed limit is. Then if your reported speed is
greater than the speed limit of the road you are on an offence notice will
   be sent.

This will mean no matter where you are whether in the middle of the CBD
surrounded by lots of other vehicles or all by yourself up the old road if
you are speeding they will know. The only place maybe to hide will be in
the tunnels (as the satellites wouldnt be able to "see" you- though there
are ways to cover that as well).

The technology to do this will only get cheaper so the introduction price is
not what will prevent it. There is serious privacy issues here though. But
hey they could just say that it could prevent terrorism by using it if they
spun it just right that will get us giving away our civil rights :)

OK I am probably being alarmist but the technology is there to do this.

I don't think we have too much to worry about there. As if Bob Carr
is going to implement a technology that will COST $200-$400 per car,
robbing the coffers of millions of dollars in speeding fines!

Not unless he finds another way to make that kind of money first,
   and I doubt that!
