Hi all,
This is a reminder that the next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on tomorrow evening,Tuesday 06 February 2007.
Matthew Hodgson has agreed to present a case study of his tagging work in Government.
It's a rare thing for a government organisation to embrace a world free of taxonomy, particularly when they are well aware that, come Senate Estimates time, analysis of the information in that world could cause nose bleeds and hair loss. It's a good thing, then, that some of us have navigated this territory before and know you don't need to throw large machines designed at Cyberdyne Systems to make sense of unstructured information.
Matthew tells the story of his experience at OATSIH - of a recommendation to leverage existing folk taxonomies, use tagging, and even topic maps, to enable this agency to describe and report on health services activity in Aboriginal communities.
We follow a meet'n'greet/presentation/chat format, with the emphasis on information exchange at practitioner level. This is a great opportunity to talk with other IAs in Canberra, have a few drinks, and chat about work.
Time: 17:00-18:30
Day/Date: Tuesday 06 February 2007
Venue: SMS Management & Technology
Ground Floor, 8 Brindabella Circuit
CANBERRA AIRPORT ACT
Please RSVP ASAP for catering purposes.
Parking: please keep in mind that Brindabella Park has different parking arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is free parking for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8 Brindabella Circuit. After that you have to move your car or pay for parking (and this applies past the end of the meeting to 11:30PM).
PS: there is a contact list for the Canberra IA Cocktail Hours: you can join via http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/canberra_ia_community
PPS: We will also be discussing BarCampCanberra 07 after Matt's talk - see http://barcamp.org/BarCampCanberra for details so far.
