just in case you are not aware of the Sydney-IA-Peers group - they are meeting next Wednesday night (as are we here in Canberra, announcement to come soon). It is worth being on the mailing list - email Eric eric@... for details.
And if you haven't seen the UX Zeitgeist mashup that Eric mentions please go have a look - it is collecting information on the most popular user experience books, their authors, and where else these books are referenced.
Cheers, Andrew

Hi Andrew,
The April IA-Peers will be on next week, Wednesday the 18th; usual place, usual time. Once again, please bring any left over chocolates for your host if you can.
Some of you might have already seen the UX Zeitgeist, a new feature in beta from Rosenfeld Media. If not, go have a sneak peek right now:
Lou sent me a questionnaire about what UX books I consider essential, which ones I think are yet to be written, and so on ... I¹m so far behind on my reading that I punted, and instead offered to ask the IA-Peers group. Be prepared :-)
What: good gossip, better beer, best company When: Wednesday, April 18th, 7pm-9pm Where: Woolloomooloo Hotel, the courtyard Who: Anyone involved in, or interested in, Information Architecture Why: Do we need a reason? RSVP: Eric Scheid <eric@...> 0402 404 733
It¹s a long way to come, but if you happen to be in town ... :-)
Please forward this invite to anyone you think might be interested.

This is a reminder that the next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on tomorrow evening,Tuesday 06 February 2007.
Matthew Hodgson has agreed to present a case study of his tagging work in Government.
It's a rare thing for a government organisation to embrace a world free of taxonomy, particularly when they are well aware that, come Senate Estimates time, analysis of the information in that world could cause nose bleeds and hair loss. It's a good thing, then, that some of us have navigated this territory before and know you don't need to throw large machines designed at Cyberdyne Systems to make sense of unstructured information.
Matthew tells the story of his experience at OATSIH - of a recommendation to leverage existing folk taxonomies, use tagging, and even topic maps, to enable this agency to describe and report on health services activity in Aboriginal communities.
We follow a meet'n'greet/presentation/chat format, with the emphasis on information exchange at practitioner level. This is a great opportunity to talk with other IAs in Canberra, have a few drinks, and chat about work.
Parking: please keep in mind that Brindabella Park has different parking arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is free parking for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8 Brindabella Circuit. After that you have to move your car or pay for parking (and this applies past the end of the meeting to 11:30PM).

Hi,
I'm one of the pro-tem Organisers Lite (TM) for BarCampCanberra 07.
We want to hold it on the weekend of 3-4 March this year to coincide
with the other BarCampAustralia events.
At this stage the Organisers Lite (TM) are looking for a venue. After
that it can self-organise in true unconference style. Perhaps some
semi-organisation to ensure that there are some decent t-shirts. But
after that, blissful self-organisation.
Details such as they are and a few random thoughts at
http://barcamp.org/BarCampAustralia and
http://barcampcanberra.org/blog
If anyone has thoughts, suggestions, ideas, amusing anecdotes or a
venue we'd love to hear from you. Please forward this email to anyone
you think might become involved, be interested, or at least not openly
hostile :)

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend. I will be launching the new APEC 2007 web site on that day. Oh, I guess you don't know, I am back at DITR.
Cheers,

Hi Folks,
events have superceded us... there was talk of Canberra's web community getting together for an end of year drinks/socialising/networking party - other events of this type are called web-blasts. In the absence of an alternative venue I volunteered to augment our December meeting (was tentatively scheduled for 05 December, now 12 December).
What this means, in practical terms, is that instead of the 12-15 of us there will be 50-odd from within the web development/design/IA community. We'll still get to talk IA, but there will be other people around as well. The main web-blast party will be in the SMS back bar area, and if there are enough of us that still want to do "what book influenced you the most as an IA" show and tell discussion then we can hold this in parallel in the SMS boardroom, or we can join the rest of them out the back. Thoughts?
Either way, there is currently a limit of 50 participants for the web-blast - if you would like to come, please register ASAP through http://webblast.org/canberra/

The next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on Tuesday 14 November 2006.
Donna Maurer, IA extraordinaire and a talented presenter, will be talking on
everything you need to know (and some you don't) about IA structures -
hierarchies, faceted classification, database, organic structures
We follow a meet'n'greet/presentation/chat format, with the emphasis on
information exchange at practitioner level. This is a great opportunity to talk
with other IAs in Canberra, have a few drinks, and chat about work.
Time: 17:00-18:30
Day/Date: Tuesday 14 November 2006
Venue: SMS Management & Technology
Ground Floor, 8 Brindabella Circuit
CANBERRA AIRPORT ACT
Parking: please keep in mind that Brindabella Park has different parking
arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is free parking
for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8 Brindabella Circuit. After that
you have to move your car or pay for parking (and this applies past the end of
the meeting).

I'll endeavour to be there, technically my work hours are supposed to be from 08:30-17:30, if I am still at PM&C then it won't be an issue for me to leave early. I will reconfirm closer to the 14th, when I will know where I am posted.

Thanks to those who attended. I appreciate being able to test my talk
on you, particularly since it wasn't strictly IA related.
If anyone is after a list of links or the like, email me offline -
trib [at] stephencollins [dot] org - and I'd be happy to send them to you.
We also discussed LinkedIn. I'd be only too happy to accept
connections from any of you. You can see my profile at

This is a reminder that the next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on Tuesday
(because more people can make Tuesdays) 03 October 2006.
Steve Collins (of ACME Guide fame) will be talking to us on... wait for it...
CrazySexyCool (Web2.0 - what is it, why do I want it and how do I get there?)
If you work with technology (don't we all?) you've probably heard the term
"Web2.0" by now. But what is Web2.0? Why is it sending the pundits into
breathless paroxysms? Is it REALLY as important as the tech media and
permanent-beta start-ups would have you believe? Most importantly, is it a
viable option for you and your project?
Revelation awaits when Steve Collins delivers the answers on Web2.0...

IA Summit - Call for proposals
The Information Architecture Summit is a premier gathering place for
information architects and for discussion about information
architecture. Everyone who touches on IA is welcome to share and learn.
Last year's IA Summit attracted over 500 attendees, including beginners,
experienced IAs, and people in a range of related fields.
In this call, we seek proposals for presentations, panels, research,
pre-conference workshops & posters.
All proposals can address core IA principles, emerging trends and
technologies, or the business of IA. We are also interested in
cross-disciplinary contributions to the practice of IA from related
fields such as library science, user experience, interaction design, and
user centered design. Sessions may address core IA skills or advanced IA
topics.
We encourage submissions from practitioners, academics, and students. We
also love hearing from developers, business analysts, managers, and
others who work with information architects and/or information
architecture.
We also seek research papers. Submissions in this format should make
empirical or theoretical contributions to information architecture. You
do not have to be affiliated with an academic institution to submit a
research paper.
