Folks,

forwarding this message from the IXDA list.

Throwing this open for discussion - should we do the same for our November meeting? We traditionally fold the December meeting into WebBlast.

We could even combine this with a debate, or an APS vs Contractors/Consultants quiz, or some other shenanigans. Thoughts?

Best regards, Andrew

Well, I'll be talking (briefly) about attending the recent Enterprise
2.0 Conference in Boston and opening the floor to questions about who,
what, when where, why and how. I figure my experience there, and the
things I saw will be of at least some interest to the group.

To suggest that I would be teaching everyone about E2.0 presumes a
great deal of hubris on my part...

That said, I have two upcoming what is/state of the nation
presentations on E2.0, so getting a feel from the group as to what
issues might be appropriate to cover in terms of information for those
events will be mightily useful.

Hi all

I'm sure that most, if not all of you, are familiar with Web Directions
South (http://south08.webdirections.org/) which is a great web conference
held yearly in Sydney. Our own lovely Donna Spencer is presenting the
Designing Interaction in the Age of Ajax workshop.

There's some info below if you're interested in attending. I've been
attending since the start of the conferences and there's a few on this
mailing list that have attended quite a few as well. I love the chance to
network with a whole bunch of people who love working in the web industry!

On a side note, the OzIA conference is usually held around the same time, so
it's fantastic to make it to Sydney for two great events.

Cheers,
Ruth

That article is a flavour piece following the appearance of a couple
of really inspiring (they are literally the stars of the show) CIA
analysts at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston. I'm lucky enough
to have been here this week and have met Sean and Don who are
inspiring guys leading the effort within the CIA and larger US
intelligence community to drive adoption of social tools for real time
collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Their story is compelling and a great case study to give to the
conservative clients who declare Enterprise 2.0 is too risky and
non-productive.

There have also been a number of other real-life, thorough case
studies presented that give the lie to the naysayers pretty
comprehensively. There are major, seemingly conservative organisations
having major success with these tools.

I'd be happy to give a summary at an IA Cocktail Hour in the future,
but you can also read the posts I'm putting up at acidlabs. I have
several up and a few unfinished.

"...instructions from a 1944 CIA field manual for sabotaging
companies. The manual suggests that agents encourage companies to use
channels to make decisions, and when possible refer matters to
committees for further study and consideration. Companies will face
further strife when spies within encourage haggling over the precise
wording of communications.

Ironically, many companies now follow such policies, which today
discourage the use of Web 2.0 tools. "In big organizations, there is
always someone who can say no," Burke said. "It is really hard for
organizations to change because everyone is looking for someone else
to say its OK. Web 2.0 has allowed us to create new avenues of
dialogue, to allow new ideas to emerge." "

Hi everyone

The next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is Thursday 26 June 2008. Darren
Menachemson, Director of Design at the Australian Customs Service, is
going to be speaking about Design Visualisations.

Design Visualisations are information products that turn design
concepts into highly visual narratives early in a project lifecycle.
Design Visualisations enable decision-makers, stakeholders, users and
the project team to understand, challenge and refine complex
solutions-to-be.

The presentation will cover:

      * what a visualisation is (and why they’re brilliant);
      * how you make one;
      * who needs to be involved;
      * how you get them to an audience; and
      * what happens next.

It will be relevant for information architects, interaction
designers, user-centred designers and information designers. Those
who are interested are welcome to join us afterwards for an informal
dinner in Dickson.

Time: 17:30-19:00
Day/Date: Thursday 26 June 2008
Venue: Ipsos-Eureka Social Research Institute
Level 1
55 Woolley Street (almost above Zefferelli’s)
Dickson

Please RSVP to [facibus AT gmail DOT com] as soon as possible for

Hello all

We are now in the process of developing a schedule for the rest of
2008, for our IA Cocktail Hours.

IA Cocktail Hours are a community driven, volunteer event. If you've
enjoyed the Hours in the past or like being part of this community,
then we strongly encourage you to get up and share some of your
knowledge and ideas with us. We'd particularly like to see case
studies (which can be small!) from folks who haven't spoken before.

The Redmond WA campus is owned by Microsoft, but the time I visited it I found it accessible  B-)

I happily recommend RTF in general, but with the usual provisos about use of colour and captioning images.

An RTF file can be accessible, but you could never say it is necessarily accessible because it's in RTF format. For example, RTF can encode graphics which may have no text equivalent; it may rely on colour alone to signify meaning; and so on. There have to be standards that the author must follow, in exactly the same way as for HTML.

Then there's the issue of cognitive accessibility - just using words doesn't guarantee that readers can understand what the author intends...

I've been editing my stupid book all day. Why doesn't it ever end.

Have a good one. Good luck Caronne!

Hi all

For those coming to IA Cocktail Hour tonight, I will do my best to get to the Stamford office by 5.30pm.  If I’m a little late (will only be a few minutes) and there’s no one in the Stamford office, please wait and I’ll be there soon to open the office.

The office isn’t sign posted (the building owners still haven’t gotten around to fixing it!) but it is the Earth Basics building next to Officeworks.

If you need to get hold of me, my mobile is: 0423 763 314.

See (some/most) of you tonight!

We need your help-the more participants we get the greater the chance

Hi Folks,

while this is a Canberra list, there may be people interested in pursuing user
experience (UX) work in Sydney, or you may know someone that is already Sydney
based who is interested.

I hope you will join me in applauding NSW DET for wanting to engage UX people on
a permanent basis - that they (and many Commonwealth departments) are seeing the
value of putting UX people on permanent staff at a fairly reasonable salary is
encouraging for the whole industry - a recognition of our worth.

Subject: user experience roles at NSW Department of Education and Training

The NSW Department of Education and Training needs user experience design
professionals or those with a strong propensity for this kind of activity
and who can show relevant experience and maturity to make a case of
sufficient equivalence. Three positions are soon to be available in Sydney,
Australia, just a short stroll away from the Opera House and Circular Quay.

The attached document is a preview of the user experience design and
management positions soon to be advertised. Until such time as they are
advertised (which will be some time in the next few weeks) we are seeking
expressions of interest from individuals. People are most welcome to send
Faruk Avdi (faruk.avdi@...) their CVs.

A passion for the user experience design of systems, services, online
products and an associated stomach for detail is what we need. The roles on
offer are part architectural, part management, part design. The major
opportunity is to carry ideas from inception forward; to manage; to operate;
to define and modulate practice; and to take full responsibility for
large-scale complex online channels purely and simply in the public
interest.

Many thanks,

Faruk Avdi, Tel. 61 + 2 + 9561 8446
