Hi folks,

did anyone notice when http://www.abc.net.au/news/ changed? Thoughts?
I like it a lot - it seems more "bloggy", and perhaps that is just
what I am used to now.

Cheers, Andrew

chat about work.

Time: 17:30-19:00
Day/Date: Thursday 21 June 2007
Venue: SMS Management & Technology
Ground Floor, 8 Brindabella Circuit
CANBERRA AIRPORT ACT

Parking: please note that Brindabella Park has different parking
arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is
free parking for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8
Brindabella Circuit. After that you have to move your car or pay for
parking (and this applies past the end of the meeting).

Hi all,

I'm juggling work, home and afterwork commitments with those of other

space for Thursday 14 June for the next IA cocktail hour.

If you can't make it, and really want to, please let me know.

PS: I've registered iacanberra.org and will get some kind of

probably go onto linux hosting so that we can more easily do something

Hi,

Please come on in, have a look around, and check out the program and
speakers we've lined up for Web Directions South, our web design and
development conference, to be held in Sydney this September 25-28 2007.

http://www.webdirections.org/

With more than 30 leading experts, including a dozen international stars of
the web industry, across three tracks, Web Directions South will focus on
the key technology and business issues of the web in 2007. It really is
Australia's premier event for the web industry. Speakers for 2007 include

* Andy Clarke - Transcendent CSS
* Aaron Gustafson - Javascript and Ajax
* Brian Fling - designing for the mobile web
* George Oates - user experience design for communities
* Bert Bos - co-creator of CSS on the future of Web Standards
* Rashmi Sinha - online communities
* Adrian Holovaty - making data smart
* Mark Pesce - commons based peer production

plus many more new and old faces to educate and inspire us all once again
this September.

http://www.webdirections.org/program/speakers/

This year at Web Directions South alongside our traditional Design and
Development focus, there's a new Management/Strategy track. So, if you
design or develop for the web, manage web teams, or if your business relies
on the web, we've got two full days full for you.

As always, Web Directions South remains excellent value: register before
June 30 to see this amazing line up for just $795.

We've also got 6 workshops over the two days before Web Directions South:

* Brian Fling - Designing for the mobile web
* Aaron Gustafson - Progressive enhancement with Javascript
* Andy Clarke - Transcending CSS
* Laurel Papworth - Building vibrant and successful online communities
* Startup and freelance bootcamp. Every thing you need to know about going
out on your own as a freelancer or startup company.
* World Wide Web Consortium SIG technology day - W3C experts covering the
latest developments in web standards

http://www.webdirections.org/program/workshops/

Again, excellent value at just $395 with a conference ticket.

This year, in yet another first, we'll be featuring the Web Expo - running
throughout the conference at Darling Harbour.

http://www.webdirections.org/sponsor/expo/

And perhaps most exciting of all, we'll be hosting Australia's first Web
Hack day, on the Saturday following the conference.

http://www.webdirections.org/program/web-hack/

And of course there'll be all the usual parties and opportunities to catch
up with old friends, and make new connections.

We are really excited with the quality and range of speakers we've been able
to get all the way to Sydney, the great new venue at Darling Harbour, with
the new Expo, the extended range of workshops, and WebHack, and hope you'll
be too. We look forward to seeing you in Sydney at the end of September for
what promises to be one of the stand out web events anywhere in the World -
Web Directions South 2007.

Thanks Steve,

a good idea.

What does integrate nicely, and a possible extension topic for next week, is the mygads.com natural language query/input engine - it has a calendar function that draws nicely from the main topic store. And it works nicely from IM clients like Google Chat :)

Hi there

After a long delay, Canberra CHISIG is getting re-started. Duncan
Stevenson is the new co-ordinator and has arranged a very interesting demo:

"The CSIRO ICT Centre Immersive Environments Team will present a
research prototype broadband tele-health system and will demonstrate it
linking two sites – one in Canberra and the other in Sydney".

The meeting will be at the Computer Science and Information Technology
Building (building 108), North Road, Australian National University.
Starts at 5.30pm.

More details in the attached flyer.

*Please pass on *to anyone who may be interested in this session, or in

A message from Roger Hudson for Australian web professionals:

---------

The new WIPA site was launched today.

The recently established Web Industry Professionals Association (WIPA) aims
to foster the development of the Web Industry in Australia and provide
forums where people who work in all the different facets of the industry can
come together and exchange ideas.

Australian web professionals can now join WIPA through the new site.

WIPA is not just for one web practice or section of the industry. WIPA is
for all web professionals in Australia including, designers, content
writers, information architects, usability and accessibility specialists,
web developers, interface developers, online content producers etc. In
short, anyone who works in the business and who has an interest in
discussing, promoting and improving the work we do.

WIPA is a not for profit association incorporated in NSW. Although the
incorporation is in NSW, the association is committed to promoting and
representing the work of web professionals throughout Australia. As a clear
demonstration of this commitment, the Association Rules provide for
representation on the Management Committee from all States and Territories
with more than 5 WIPA Members. Also, the position of Vice-President is
reserved for a person who does not live in NSW. The current WIPA Management
Committee has members from the ACT, NSW and Victoria.

There is a variety of other web-related groups in Australia including, the
Web Standards Group, Usability Professionals Association, Oz-IA, AWIA,
Mobile Monday and AIMIA. WIPA aims to work cooperatively with all other
groups in helping to develop a cohesive and sustainable web industry in
Australia.

Hi Andrew and Eric,

Thanks for the assistance in getting this out to the right people.

The roles I have are permanent opportunities in Sydney (CBD) with one a
global online media organization. They have a stable of websites and
are completely redeveloping one of their major sites. It's a ground up
redevelopment and bringing everything in house.

They are looking for an Experience Architect (Usability Specialist)
around the $90 - 100k salary. Not all that senior but someone who is
looking for a challenge with a big web presence.

I'd love to hear from anyone who would like to hear further about the
role.

If I can do anything further of if you have any questions please don't
hesitate to get in contact with me.

Thanks once again.

Kind regards

Glen McGrath

Hi all,

just a reminder that the Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on this evening,
Wednesday 18 April 2007.

Matthew Hodgson will speak on Semantic Analysis in IA.

Content audits are hard. It's probably because English is a messy
language - people write with different styles and call things by
different names. It means that analysis, categorisation and building
corporate taxonomies are very time consuming, even if its just for the
local intranet.

Matthew will talk about his recent experience in the Department of
Health and Ageing, and introduce the concept of semantic analysis as a
method of assisting information classification.

We follow a meet'n'greet/presentation/chat format, with the emphasis
on information exchange at practitioner level. This is a great
opportunity to talk with other IAs in Canberra, have a few drinks, and
chat about work.

Time: 17:30-19:00
Day/Date: Wednesday 18 April 2007
Venue: SMS Management & Technology
Ground Floor, 8 Brindabella Circuit
CANBERRA AIRPORT ACT

Parking: please note that Brindabella Park has different parking
arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is
free parking for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8
Brindabella Circuit. After that you have to move your car or pay for
parking (and this applies past the end of the meeting).

PS: there is a contact list for the Canberra IA Cocktail Hours: you
can join via http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/canberra_ia_community

Best regards, Andrew Boyd

Hi Folks,

just in case you are not aware of the Sydney-IA-Peers group - they are meeting next Wednesday night (as are we here in Canberra, announcement to come soon). It is worth being on the mailing list - email Eric eric@... for details.

And if you haven't seen the UX Zeitgeist mashup that Eric mentions please go have a look - it is collecting information on the most popular user experience books, their authors, and where else these books are referenced.

Cheers, Andrew

Hi Andrew,

The April IA-Peers will be on next week, Wednesday the 18th; usual place,
usual time. Once again, please bring any left over chocolates for your host
if you can.

Some of you might have already seen the UX Zeitgeist, a new feature in beta
from Rosenfeld Media. If not, go have a sneak peek right now:

    http://www.rosenfeldmedia.com/zeitgeist/

Lou sent me a questionnaire about what UX books I consider essential, which
ones I think are yet to be written, and so on ... I¹m so far behind on my
reading that I punted, and instead offered to ask the IA-Peers group. Be
prepared :-)

What:  good gossip, better beer, best company
When:  Wednesday, April 18th, 7pm-9pm
Where: Woolloomooloo Hotel, the courtyard
Who:   Anyone involved in, or interested in, Information Architecture
Why:   Do we need a reason?
RSVP:  Eric Scheid <eric@...> 0402 404 733

It¹s a long way to come, but if you happen to be in town ... :-)

Please forward this invite to anyone you think might be interested.

regards,

Eric Scheid

Hi all,

it is a bit later in the month, and a bit later in the week than we
are used to owing to room availability, but we are pleased to announce
that the next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour will be on as follows:
Time: 5:30PM for a 5:45PM start until 7:00PM
Day/date: Wednesday 14 March 2007
Topic: Andrew Boyd will run a short presentation on deliverables -
what makes a good IA deliverable? What makes a necessary IA
deliverable? Is it better to be paid by the kilo for documentation or
present the minimum possible? We'll look at deliverable
types/styles/formats, briefly discuss prototyping tools, and then have
a general show and tell session/discussion around deliverables. If you
have a deliverable that you are proud of, or unhappy about, bring it
along.
Venue: SMS Boardroom
8 Brindabella Circuit
Canberra ACT

Parking: please be aware that Brindabella Park has odd parking
arrangements - there is an hour's free parking at the front of 8
Brindabella Circuit, then you have to pay for parking until well after
the meeting finishes.

Cheers, Andrew
