That's a good idea. Do you know if Benchmark do this sort of thing with
groups? It's a nice venue and they have a really good range of wine by
the glass (we know what's important)... I also suspect we'll be able to
hear each other - something that worries me about other venues, and that
was tricky at Kingos when we started there many moons ago.

Another option would be some of the ethnic clubs. I'm not a member of
any, but I know that many have meeting rooms etc (the Austrian Club has
a nice one, and I think the Irish Club has a few). If anyone is a member
of one, could you find out what facilities they have and what they would
expect from us (some will want us to buy nibbles, some will be happy as
long as we buy drinks)

Hi Steve,

King O'Malley's is probably as good a choice as any in that respect,
even though it is (ack) Civic parking :)

Not sure I would call it classy, but they do have Stella on tap.

Hi folks,

it is time to start thinking about the venue thing again. We are
nominally due to have a meeting in a couple of weeks time, but we
don't have a venue. Given that we decided to try for an alternate
venue, the SMS boardroom has been snapped up by another group in our
regular timeslot.

My two cents worth is: if we go to the National Library then we won't
be a cocktail hour any more (unless we sneak something in with us and
pass it around in a brown paper bag, not my first choice!) :) But if
we are going to give it a go, then let's give it a go.

The alternate suggestion was something like King O'Malley's (where we
met in 2002-2003).

Again, I would ask for your thoughts such that we can start promoting
the new venue ASAP.

Best regards, Andrew

When Twitter's working properly, this should work - all followers of
IA Canberra should see it. At least that's how I remember OzIA2007
working.

I've requested auto-friending for the account, so that the stream of
messages and friends is vsible at the page.

But yes, As andrew's follow-up indicates, there have been some
oddnesses with Twitter recently. If it gives us a big enough case of
the irrits, we chould all lodge bugs and send @ messages to Biz Stone.

So no, you're not being dumb at all. Your memory reflects current
(sometimes flaky) app behavior. That said, it seems pretty good
today. ;)

Hi Donna,

This may be an issue even when everyone does follow @iacanberra.

I believe that Twitter should be reliably considered unreliable – that is, if there is anything important to say, it should be said in more than one place. I’ve seen so much weird stuff in the last month of being a heavy twitterer – where two people sitting in the same room get wildly different sets of traffic in the one day – that I would not recommend it for anything approaching essential communication.

Thanks Steve,

With many of us using Twitter now it is good for keeping in touch – that said, we’ll probably need to set up the blog to repeat the tweets such that no-one misses out on important information. From memory I can use an RSS widget in WordPress and point it at the Twitter feed?

On a vaguely related issue: any group members who may not have heard through other channels: registration for WebBlast Canberra (scheduled for 12 December) has opened at http://webblast.org/canberra

Hi Jessica,

(and thanks to Kerry for the NLA suggestion)

central and free of charge would be good for me. Free of charge will get us away
from per-meeting sponsorship - that said, we can probably manage to scrape
together a small amount between our respective companies and organisations.

Somewhere in the inner part of Canberra, like the National Library, is
likely to be the 'fairest' option.

Are we looking for somewhere that is free of charge?

The National Library’s Fourth Floor meeting room might meet this requirement.  It’s often used for after-work professional meetings.

Of course, we’d have to ask them first.

Hi folks,

probably the most consistent suggestion that I receive as convener of
the Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is that the SMS office is not accessible
enough - that is, it's too hard for some people to get to the airport.
The traffic situation has deteriorated, certainly. I know that Julie
raised it as an issue based on feedback received frm group members.

I grant that we may attract more people if there is an alternate venue
- it is worth a go.

What I'd like to suggest is that over the next month and a half we
think about venue - my idea of what we need (and granted that this is
something we need to discuss as a group) is a relatively quiet space
with projection facilities and if possible an internet connection.
Access to bar facilities is a traditional thing but probably a "nice
to have" rather than a "must have".

What do you think?

Thanks, Andrew

Hi Folks,

after some initial teething issues (i.e. my forgotten password) there
is now an iacanberra group on librarything.com.

As discussed at the last IA Cocktail Hour, we're going to experiment
with using librarything to create a shared virtual library.

Because the librarything.com group is members-only, you will need to
email me (or contact facibus via Twitter) and let me know your
librarything username - I will then send you an invitation.

Steve Collins/Donna Maurer: theoretically you have invites already to
test the process. Grateful you let me know if they came through.

Best regards, Andrew

Hi Folks,

Matthew Hodgson is giving a presentation on prototyping and user-centred design at the next Australian Business Analysis Association meeting - 5:30pm-7:30pm on Tuesday 4 December.

If you haven’t heard Matt talk on rapid prototyping and conceptual design you should think about attending – he knows the subject backwards and is an entertaining and informative speaker.

I am told that there will be wine and nibbles, and that you don’t have to be a BA or a project manager to attend.

Please see the attached flyer if interested and RSVP ASAP if you can attend.

Best regards, Andrew

Hi everyone

Do you mind taking a few minutes to complete the attatched form to give us some feedback on the IA Cocktail hour.

This is a chance to think back to a couple of past IA cocktial hours that you have attended and to tell us what it was about them that you liked.

It is also a chance to feedback on things that you would like to see done differently.

What will be done with the information?

  • We are going to work through the general categories of informaiton that is fed back to us this coming thursday to find the main themes of what is working and what could make the IA cocktail hour better
  • The we are going to think and extend some metaphors of what the cocktail hour offers people
  • Lastly we will do some broad based planning around the sorts of things that people would like to do in future IA cocktail hour sessions

So if you can squeeze the time in please feed back anyting that you would like to share with us on the attatched spreadsheet.

With many thanks in advance

Julie Hale

Hi all,

The next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on Thursday 15 November 2007.

We have two topics:

-          iacanberra.org library: we’ve talked about having a virtual library over the last month or so – and now it is time to put something in place. We all own some books that we don’t mind loaning to friends, and we don’t mind lending them from other friends – but how do you know what everyone else has and where your books are at the moment? What we’d like to do is use an existing online system (like librarything) or roll our own – so that those that want to share their books can.

-          Change Manager extraordinaire Julie Hale has been running a study on where we are as a group and where we want to go over the last couple of months. Julie would like to present the findings of her study so far so that we can discuss them.

Time: 17:30-19:00
Day/Date: Thursday 15 November 2007
Venue: SMS Management & Technology
Ground Floor, 8 Brindabella Circuit
CANBERRA AIRPORT ACT

Please RSVP as soon as possible for catering purposes.

Parking: please remember that Brindabella Park has different parking arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is free parking for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8 Brindabella Circuit. After that you have to move your car or pay for parking (and this applies past the end of the meeting).

Hi all,

The next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on Thursday 18 October 2007.

Ruth Ellison from DIMA will present on Accessibility. Accessibility is
often one of the last things to be considered when developing a
system. This can happen for many reasons, including the organisational
context and general misconceptions about accessibility. We will be
looking at a case study of the challenges and learnings of
implementing accessibility in a Government organisation.

Time: 17:30-19:00
Day/Date: Thursday 18 October 2007
Venue: SMS Management & Technology
Ground Floor, 8 Brindabella Circuit
CANBERRA AIRPORT ACT

Please RSVP as soon as possible for catering purposes.

Parking: please remember that Brindabella Park has different parking
arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is
free parking for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8
Brindabella Circuit. After that you have to move your car or pay for
parking (and this applies past the end of the meeting).
