professional meetings.
Of course, we’d have to ask them
first.

IA Cocktail Hour: Venue
Hi folks,
probably the most consistent suggestion that I receive as convener of
the Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is that the SMS office is not accessible
enough - that is, it's too hard for some people to get to the airport.
The traffic situation has deteriorated, certainly. I know that Julie
raised it as an issue based on feedback received frm group members.
I grant that we may attract more people if there is an alternate venue
- it is worth a go.
What I'd like to suggest is that over the next month and a half we
think about venue - my idea of what we need (and granted that this is
something we need to discuss as a group) is a relatively quiet space
with projection facilities and if possible an internet connection.
Access to bar facilities is a traditional thing but probably a "nice
to have" rather than a "must have".
This email, and any attachments, may be confidential and also privileged. If you are not the intended recipient, please notify the sender and delete all copies of this transmission along with any attachments immediately. Hi Folks,
after some initial teething issues (i.e. my forgotten password) there
is now an iacanberra group on librarything.com.
As discussed at the last IA Cocktail Hour, we're going to experiment
with using librarything to create a shared virtual library.
Because the librarything.com group is members-only, you will need to
email me (or contact facibus via Twitter) and let me know your
librarything username - I will then send you an invitation.
Steve Collins/Donna Maurer: theoretically you have invites already to
test the process. Grateful you let me know if they came through.
Best regards, Andrew

Matthew Hodgson is giving a presentation on prototyping and user-centred design at the next Australian Business Analysis Association meeting - 5:30pm-7:30pm
on Tuesday 4 December.
If you haven’t heard Matt talk on rapid prototyping and conceptual design you should think about attending – he knows the subject backwards and is an entertaining
and informative speaker.
I am told that there will be wine and nibbles, and that you don’t have to be a BA or a project manager to attend.
Please see the attached flyer if interested and RSVP ASAP if you can attend.

Do you mind taking a few minutes to complete the attatched form to give us some feedback on the IA Cocktail hour.
This is a chance to think back to a couple of past IA cocktial hours that you have attended and to tell us what it was about them that you liked.
It is also a chance to feedback on things that you would like to see done differently.
What will be done with the information?
We are going to work through the general categories of informaiton that is fed back to us this coming thursday to find the main themes of what is working and what could make the IA cocktail hour better
The we are going to think and extend some metaphors of what the cocktail hour offers people
Lastly we will do some broad based planning around the sorts of things that people would like to do in future IA cocktail hour sessions
So if you can squeeze the time in please feed back anyting that you would like to share with us on the attatched spreadsheet.
With many thanks in advance

Canberra IA Cocktail Hour: Thursday 15 November 2007
Hi all,
The next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on Thursday 15 November 2007.
We have two
topics:
-iacanberra.org library: we’ve talked about having a virtual
library over the last month or so – and now it is time to put something
in place. We all own some books that we don’t mind loaning to friends,
and we don’t mind lending them from other friends – but how do you
know what everyone else has and where your books are at the moment? What
we’d like to do is use an existing online system (like librarything) or
roll our own – so that those that want to share their books can.
-Change Manager extraordinaire Julie Hale has been running a
study on where we are as a group and where we want to go over the last couple
of months. Julie would like to present the findings of her study so far so that
we can discuss them.
Please RSVP as soon as possible for catering purposes.
Parking: please remember that Brindabella Park has different parking
arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is free parking
for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8 Brindabella Circuit. After
that you have to move your car or pay for parking (and this applies past the
end of the meeting).

Ruth Ellison from DIMA will present on Accessibility. Accessibility is

The next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on Thursday 20 September 2007.
Ruth Ellison cannot make it and her case study talk is currently scheduled for October.
We have two speakers lined up for this month:
Matthew Hodgson will speak on Culture and Social Computing, and
I (Andrew) will speak on the IA Blogosphere.
We follow a meet'n'greet/presentation/chat format, with the emphasis
on information exchange at practitioner level. This is a great opportunity to talk with other IAs in
Canberra, have a few drinks, and chat about work.
Please RSVP as soon as possible for catering purposes.

The next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is proposed for next Thursday evening (30 August 2007) – it was supposed to be this evening, but time
got away from me this month. I’m chasing down a couple of speakers at the moment – if there is a topic that you would like to present, or to see, please let me know.

Hi folks,
the next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on Thursday 19 July 2007.
There are two topics planned:
- The ACT Government is considering its online presence; Kerry Webb
will discuss some of the possible improvements and how they may affect
the user community.
- Stephen Hall is hosting a discussion on the use of tablet PCs in IA work
We follow a meet'n'greet/presentation/chat format, with the emphasis
on information exchange at practitioner level. This is a great
opportunity to talk with other IAs in Canberra, have a few drinks, and
chat about work.
Time: 17:30-19:00
Day/Date: Thursday 19 July 2007
Venue: SMS Management & Technology
Ground Floor, 8 Brindabella Circuit
CANBERRA AIRPORT ACT
Parking: please note that Brindabella Park has different parking
arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is
free parking for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8
Brindabella Circuit. After that you have to move your car or pay for
parking (and this applies past the end of the meeting).
PS: there is a contact list for the Canberra IA Cocktail Hours: you
can join via http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/canberra_ia_community

Hi folks,
did anyone notice when http://www.abc.net.au/news/ changed? Thoughts?
I like it a lot - it seems more "bloggy", and perhaps that is just
what I am used to now.

We're all different.
I liked the previous design that allowed an easy scan of news items in
all topics on the one screen.

Not until you told me. But I only read ABC by RSS anyway.
That said, I agree. It's very nice.
My take is that the ABC is one of the few government agencies
(technically it
still is) that truly understands the web and new media generally -
blogs, Second
Life, feeds, encouraging client (audience) feedback. It's like
social computing
heaven. I'd love to see their metrics on staff and audience engagement
satisfaction, retention and knowledge management/collaboration. I'd
hazard a
guess that they show good news.
Many federal government bodies in Australia (and probably state, too)
would do
well to look at appropriate parts of the ABC's social computing/
engagement model
and adopt. Real soon now. Otherwise you just get more of what I
blogged last
week - http://www.acidlabs.org/2007/06/28/roadblocks-and-steamrollers/.
