I think Fyshwick is actually a pretty good location - part way between
north and south, without the traffic fight that happens toward the
airport ;) How deep in Fyshwick are you - I was thinking you were on

Hi Jessica,

let us avoid foxpaws wherever possible - I am not sure if our thankyou can run to a case a month but a bottle or two of something reasonably nice as a thank you (and a mention on the iacanberra.org blog) is quite doable.

Do you think that they would find this acceptable?

Best regards, Andrew

Hi Andrew

Thanks for clarifying - I wasn't clear that the meeting for this week
had definitely been moved. Too many threads for me to keep a track of!

We have a bit more time to make a decision about Dickson then. Just
keep in mind it only holds 10 people. And I'm still looking for
suggestions for a small thank you. Please help me avoid a massive
social faux pas!

Happy to do Dickson too.

I would love to offer our office space for meetings (we can probably hold
about 10 people in our meeting room) but I don't think Fyshwick is
particularly convenient for people to get to (although there's free parking)
:)

Cheers,

Dickson is good for me as well. I think we should take up this offer -
it gives us some flexibility and we can see if it makes any difference
to who attends (and I can walk home ;)

I have occasionally found it hard to get to the airport on time, but
mainly because Amber had gymnastics until 5.30. This year she has
swimming at 6 on Thursdays, so I am going to miss some months anyway...

Hello

Well, my market research friends have risen to the challenge and have
offered their meeting room on Woolley Street in Dickson. They are
fine for us to consume food and drink in there and it is available
for our first meeting. They even have a projector we can use. Only
downside is that it only seats about 10 people.

If we go down this route, they have very politely asked for a "small
something in return", looking to me for suggestions. I have no
experience with this sort of thing so don't know what would be
appropriate to offer. I think cash wouldn't be great - maybe a case
of wine or something? Any ideas?

Dickson is much more convenient for me, personally, and probably also
for newcomers, as it's very easy to get to by car or bus. I'm also
pretty sure parking is free around Woolley Street after 5:30pm, but
it can get kind of crowded. On the plus side, there's heaps of
restaurants we could get food from for during or after!

But at the end of the day, I'm fine with Brindabella Park or Dickson,
and both the 3rd and the 4th Thursday suit me.

Cheers

Hi folks,

Interesting question. I've always been happy for it to be at the
airport. The drive is easy enough and it's only once a month.

Maybe we stop chasing our tails?

I think the barrier is to potential new members rather than the
existing core that turns up regularly. Am I right?

I'll try again tomorrow.

But I swear, if everyone could just ring 2 places and ask, we may be
able to sort this. Sports clubs are good too!

This is the perpetual challenge. We'd like a neat meeting room with a
projector, but we'd like to have a drink and food as well, and we don't
really want to pay too much, and we'd like it to be centrally located
and with decent parking.

SCC is likely to ask for a fee and require us to purchase food. Most
clubs do, and that is tricky for a small group of inconsistent numbers.

*If we could all take on the challenge of phoning 2 nearby venues and
getting prices and details*, we can get going.

I'm going to phone the polish club and maybe bowling club in turner ;)
Dickson Tradies may be worth a go too...

Hi Jessica,

the projector was one of the reasons to stay in the SMS office. I
don't own a projector, and the spare SMS one is only available on
overnight loan when it is not being used elsewhere.

Does anyone else have a work or personal projector that they can
commit to providing regularly?

Hi all and Happy New Year

For reasons of noise, facilities and privacy, I would prefer a
meeting room type venue over a public bar or restaurant. For my
presentation on the 17th, for example, I'd be keen to use a projector
(if someone has one they can bring - Andrew/Julie?) and I can't see
that working so well at the Kingo. :-) I think if we do go down the
public bar route, Benchmark would be my preference.

I like the sound of the Southern Cross Club, which is also reasonably
central. I don't have any club memberships but if the SCC doesn't
work out, I'd be happy to join up elsewhere that has suitable
facilities.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Southern Cross Club would be good as a point of comparison to any
other venue. Our needs are fairly simple: a smallish room (let's be
optimistic and say seating for 30 people max) where we can bring
drinks purchased from them for 17:30-19:00 on the third Thursday of
every month.

Speaking of which, Julie has done an excellent job of lining up
speakers for us several months in advance (thanks Julie!) - a mixture
of topic-based and case study presentations.

Best regards, Andrew

I agree with Donna and Kerry that Benchmark sounds like a fine choice
- plus it's somewhere I've wanted to go to check out for a while.

As for clubs, I'm a member at the Southern Cross and Tuggeranong
Vikings. While for travel reasons, Vikings is impractical (although
they'll probably give us a room for free), Southern Cross has nice
enough digs in Woden. I can check costs on a room if people think
it's worth it.

That's a good idea. Do you know if Benchmark do this sort of thing with
groups? It's a nice venue and they have a really good range of wine by
the glass (we know what's important)... I also suspect we'll be able to
hear each other - something that worries me about other venues, and that
was tricky at Kingos when we started there many moons ago.

Another option would be some of the ethnic clubs. I'm not a member of
any, but I know that many have meeting rooms etc (the Austrian Club has
a nice one, and I think the Irish Club has a few). If anyone is a member
of one, could you find out what facilities they have and what they would
expect from us (some will want us to buy nibbles, some will be happy as
long as we buy drinks)

Hi Steve,

King O'Malley's is probably as good a choice as any in that respect,
even though it is (ack) Civic parking :)

Not sure I would call it classy, but they do have Stella on tap.

Let's. I say we go somewhere that is similar to the Wooloomooloo

the hungry among us. Have we such a thing in Canberra?

Hi folks,

it is time to start thinking about the venue thing again. We are
nominally due to have a meeting in a couple of weeks time, but we
don't have a venue. Given that we decided to try for an alternate
venue, the SMS boardroom has been snapped up by another group in our
regular timeslot.

My two cents worth is: if we go to the National Library then we won't
be a cocktail hour any more (unless we sneak something in with us and
pass it around in a brown paper bag, not my first choice!) :) But if
we are going to give it a go, then let's give it a go.

The alternate suggestion was something like King O'Malley's (where we
met in 2002-2003).

Again, I would ask for your thoughts such that we can start promoting
the new venue ASAP.

Best regards, Andrew

When Twitter's working properly, this should work - all followers of
IA Canberra should see it. At least that's how I remember OzIA2007
working.

I've requested auto-friending for the account, so that the stream of
messages and friends is vsible at the page.

But yes, As andrew's follow-up indicates, there have been some
oddnesses with Twitter recently. If it gives us a big enough case of
the irrits, we chould all lodge bugs and send @ messages to Biz Stone.

So no, you're not being dumb at all. Your memory reflects current
(sometimes flaky) app behavior. That said, it seems pretty good
today. ;)
