'Youth Rock the Block' festival @ The Block
(Lawson St Redfern)
Saturday October 14, between 12-4pm.
‘Youth Rock the Block’ will feature young Indigenous singers and dancers, from
ages 7 to 16, performing to the public of Sydney, and raising awareness of the
Aboriginal Housing Company's Pemulwuy Project.
The Pemulwuy Project is a plan to redevelop The Block as a vibrant residential
and commercial locality for Aboriginal people. Although the Housing Company
(AHC) owns the land on The Block the NSW Government is presently opposing the
redevelopment in favour of building a high-rise business district.
This festival follows from the highly successful and widely publicised 'Rock
the Block' event held in May 2006, which featured such artists as Ozi Batla,
from 'The Herd', Bart Willoughby, Indigenous Hip-hop artist Wire MC, Jimmy
Little's grandson James Henry, and event co-organisers- Sydney rock band
Andorra.
Youth Rock the Block is part of a festival weekend which will also incorporate
a Reggae Festival on Sunday October 15.
The event is being coordinated by AHC General Manager Lani Tuitavake, Joel
Beasant from Andorra, and community youth worker Donald Enoch.
Please find a flyer attached.
Please call:
Joel Beasant on 97971339, or
Lani Tuitavake on 02 96989249 for more information.
Yours sincerely,
Joel Beasant.
