Depends on just what and how loud....
ConFest just gone, I was woken at 3:20 AM (yes, I checked the time). The noise
which woke me was techno from Red Beach. Considering that I was camped near
Arts, it had to be pretty loud.
I don't mind amplified music, but some types are quite inappropriate. Techno
and all other types of electronic noise is not appropriate for ConFest. There
are plenty of other "festivals" devoted to that sort of thing.
More importantly perhaps was the timing. Noise such as was blasting from Red
Beach might be tolerable in the evening, up until perhaps midnight, always
provided that the sound level is no such that it drowns out or intrudes upon
anyone or anything else that is further away than about a kilometre. The
racket I'm referring to would have been clearly audible over even a drumming
circle, if that drumming was closer than about 500 metres. Conclusion - it
was unacceptable and inappropriate *at that time*.
I wouldn't go along with a ban on amplified or electronic sound, but I would
certainly support a curfew, perhaps even some specific maximum SPL as
measured by a dB meter at a range of 500 metres. If the level is over that
point, then the perpetrators would be required to either reduce the level or
turn the amps off.
More interestingly, I know that I was not the only person totally pissed off
by the noise. Another ten minutes and there would have been a distinct
possibility of a very angry crowd descending on Red Beach.....
