G'day, the hair you talk about sounds like an algea growth. But i am not that qualified to make a comment. The crayfish i keep only last a week or so, b4 they end up in the cooking pot. Cheers Matt.

so, the crayfish has molted for the second time in two weeks. This got
me to wondering itf it might be a good idea to add some calcium to his
water. I have liquid calcium I use for something else, so I could use
that. do crays need extra calcium for molting, if not would it hurt to
give him some?
Hello,
I'm fairly new here and located in South Carolina usa.
Does anyone here actively collect crays and trade crayfish?
I have many types of crays that I keep and breed and always have
extra baby's or adults available to trade at different times of the
year.
I also sell excess young when there are no trades.
Some are north american like Cambarus manningi and coosae, aussie's
like Cherax blue moon, hoa creek and orange tips, I also have over 5
types of Cambarellus and some tropical shrimp types.
I collect crays and some native fish two or three times a month from
different areas and states.
I do not ship first, however I have current trade references from as
far away as germany and as close as my own state of south carolina
with all positive results.
I ship the crays in insulted boxes with heatpaks.
Anyway, if there are any people here collecting/catching crays or
have some that I don't and you want to trade just email me at
everynowanthen29456@....
I have some baby cherax albertisii less than an inch right now, and
some Cambarus coosae, I also have a few extra adult males Procambarus
spiculifer with awesome colors, these guys are giants.
Take care.
hey champ,
a crayfish already gets from its shell, thats why it eats its shell
after molting, this is the reason why they eat it to help harden up
their new shell.you might be onto something with adding calcium to the
water as im guessing calcium builds up on their shell already leaving
it a good source of it once they molt, but im unsure of the need to add
liquid calcium to the water.if your still willing to try out your
theory, try it on one test subject an follow the instructions to the
letter so you dont add to much,an let me know how it goes thanks.

Hi,
Just found some unusual crays at a lfs and wanted some help
identifying them. They were sold as Red Chili Crays.
Grayish underbody, redish rust colored on top, black tip on claws,
flat on the outside of claws, almost a half circle on inside rimmed
with cream color and some small serations on the inside. body all the
same width from head to tail, middle joint in arms is a creamy brown
color.
Will post pictures as soon as i can.
Thanks,
Karen (ohio, usa)

Hi,
just some Qs on catching gippsland ctays
What is the best bait?
What is the best method?
what habbitat would i find crays in?
i will be fishing streams around noojee victoria
cheer
Note: all crays caught will be returned to water unharmed
The best method to catch our crays are with hoop/drop nets. I have found that pilchard works a charm to catch them, put a piece or two in an old stocking. Up around Noojee you shouldnt have a problem at all finding them!!!!! Just try and find a bend in the river or a slower running part drop your pot & away you go. I normaly catch 1-1.5kg around that area.
Good Luck. Cheers, Matt.

greetings all..
i am wondering if anyone can help with the identification of these baby
crustaceans i found in my pond. Some kids gave me a bucketful
of 'yabbies' about a year ago and i tipped them in. A couple of days
ago i drained the pond to catch the axolotls that i breed in there and
lo and behold there were baby crayfishy things. Can anyone tell me what
they are? here is a link to the pix.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/2roxfox/3086235087/
there are several photos of them in my photostream. I caught about 30
of the little things last night because i thought the big ones would
eat them.
cheers, hope someone can shed some light on the mystery for me.
jane:)
Hi jane they look like baby marron, I am not sure how to tell when
they are that young if they are the hairy ones or not. I had some
little ones last year and they looked very simular to the photos. do
you have any large ones.

I HAVE A ORANGETIP WITH BABIES AND WAS WONDERING ARE THEY EASY TO TAKE CARE OF JUST LIKE ANYOTHER CRAY WITH BABIES?

Hi , great to hear that you have a orange tips with babies, it is as simple as any other crays with babies, you can remove or block away other crayfish in the tank if you have any. Provide a good hiding place (eg pvc pipe), once the babies are about 2 weeks old they will start to move around and leave the mother eventually. During this time you need to give some crush fish-pellets, shrimps stick or some water plants as food . If not they will fight and eat up each other. Also provide many small pvc-pipes for hiding/protection.
