Fifi Box - Biography
Radio and TV personality Fifi Box has found herself in some hairy
situations as a semi-regular on Thank God You're Here. She's played
everything from a fairy to a fitness guru on the improvised comedy
show but how will she go in her new role as dancer?
Fifi has some idea of she's getting herself into. "The best thing
about doing this show is that I'll be able to prepare," she says. But
she is nervous about her chances. "I'm so uncoordinated and unfit,"
she says. "During my high school rock eisteddfod, I was put in the
back row so no one could see me." Regardless of her abilities, the
down-to-earth star is relishing this opportunity. "It's always been
one of my regrets, not being able to learn to dance," she says. "I'm
in there for the experience and to have a bit of fun."
Fifi has become a familiar voice in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane
through her hit radio show The Shebang, which she co-hosts for Triple
M with Marty Sheargold. This year, the success of The Shebang in the
drive timeslot led Triple M to move the show to Sydney in the all
important breakfast timeslot.
Her early career was spent in regional Australia working at stations
2MC/ROXFM Port Macquarie, 3TR Traralgon and 3GG Warragul. In 2000 she
co-hosted a late-night show on TTFM Melbourne and within months, was
picked up by the Triple M network to co-host a national night show
based on relationships. When the show came to an end, she moved to the
breakfast timeslot to produce Amanda Keller, Mikey Robbins and Peter
Berner.
Before long, she was on the streets as their stunt reporter. On one
memorable occasion she stripped naked before a crowd of 200 people in
a rain dance. It didn't end the drought but it signaled a change of
fortune for the effervescent blonde. Fifi's big break came soon after
when she filled in for Amanda, Mikey and Peter in June 2003. During
her first shift, she rang a guy she'd been seeing to confess to him
she was not French and her name was not Pascale, a story she'd made up
during a big night out. She won a legion of fans after he
unceremoniously dumped her on air. The station was inundated with
emails from listeners demanding Fifi stay on air and the rest is history.
Fifi will support Learning For Life, a specialist school for children
with autism. It's a cause close to her heart. "I know friends and
family with autistic children and I am aware of the demands and
difficulties they encounter," she says. "Learning For Life helps
families by providing the help and support they need."
