Jamie Durie - the Gardening Guru - Biography

Jamie Durie is set to swap his gardening tools for sequins and lycra
when he takes to the floor on Dancing With The Stars.

The successful businessman says he initially said no to joining the
hit dancing show, fearing he wouldn't have the time. "I don't do
anything by halves and I knew how much work and commitment the show
requires," he says. But he decided it was too good an opportunity to
pass up. "I enjoy a challenge," he says.

While Jamie spent nearly nine years as a performer with male revue act
Manpower, he has never had any ballroom dance training. "I'd never
even heard of the Viennese waltz," he laughs. "Ballroom dancing is
completely and utterly foreign to me. I'll be starting from scratch
like all the other dancers."

Jamie is undoubtedly one of Australia's most recognisable talents –
hosting many of Australia's top rating programs including Backyard
Blitz, The Block, Renovation Rescue and Dancing on Ice. However it was
in his role as host of TV sensation Backyard Blitz where he first
captured and inspired the imagination of the Australian public,
successfully making gardening `hip' again.

A successful garden make-over show, Backyard Blitz and the team have
received multiple gold logies for Most Popular Lifestyle Show. He
consolidated this through his role as host of two series of the
reality renovation show The Block. Jamie Durie is a qualified
horticulturist and landscape designer, and founder of the
international award-winning design company PATIO Landscape
Architecture and Design. He is also a best-selling author and
publisher, television host and businessman, managing his own
successful line of merchandised product, Patio by Jamie Durie. He has
authored five books, Patio – Garden Design and Inspiration, The
Outdoor Room, The Source Book, Outdoor Kids and Inspired.

Jamie has just signed with the Seven Network and will host Australia's
Best Backyards, a lifestyle factual series that will take a peak over
the nation's fences to find the best backyard in the country. Jamie is
also developing a promising and exciting new project for Seven in the
second half of the year. Just recently he made his American TV debut,
appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Jamie has said Seven's commitment to the global warming cause on its
breakfast show Sunrise helped seal the deal with the network. The
qualified horticulturalist and landscape designer is passionate about
the environment and is one of 85 Australian ambassadors who've been
chosen to work with former American vice president Al Gore's green
group. He is also ambassador for Planet Ark's National Tree Day and
sits on the board of the Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation in Sydney.
Jamie has chosen to dance for PLANone of the world's largest community
development organisations committed to ending child poverty. He has
been a PLAN Ambassador since 2000 and visited Sri Lanka and Uganda to
meet his three sponsor children and see the work the charity does to
support health, education, housing and family livelihood programs.
