Whew lucky I hadn't started up the drill! (only kidding).

I've got an engineer that's going to help me work out a retractable
system. We're thinking of mounting the unit in the wall or under the
seat and running the belt up behind the trim then bringing it out
before it comes into a D ring at the mounting point Dale is talking
about. If it comes together it should be super neat and most
importantly safe. I'll make sure I get plenty of photos so everyone
can see how we did it (if in fact we can).

Firstly though I've got to get the seats out of the back. What's the
best way to do this without stuffing them? and can you buy the trim
and winder removal tools easily?

Also thanks for the dash light tips John. First job for tomorrow.

Correction to my email below...the top mount is NOT made by enlarging
the hole with the Phillips head screw. The hole is approx. 35mm from the
screw.
Naturally I recommend a pro assist anyone contemplating this job.

Humblest apologies.

As per our phone discussion yesterday, and for other readers who may be
interested, the top mount is made by enlarging(by drilling) the hole
with the chrome Phillips head screw on the steel plate below the rear
quarter window. Behind this panel are two sheets of metal with a hole
through it. The bolt goes through this then a heavy washer goes next
then a nut. All in all it is a very strong mounting point and,
according to Early Bird, meets engineering requirements.

However fitment is not something I would attempt myself.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for the detailed response Dale. Just a question.
Where did you mount the top mount on the front belts? or did you
stick with laps in the front?

dash lights have a couple of issues,1, a fuse holder in the wiring loom, above
brake pedal, clear plastic inline fuse holder like the one on you stereo, these
are usually very brittle and not making contact, replace fuse holder. 2. dash
light dimmer in headlight switch, rheostat(variable resistor) remove headlight
switch from dash remove from fuse box, the dimmer is the white round piece at
the front, clean GENTLY (small piece of very fine/1200 wet and dry, very light
spray of wd 40 or similar , don't drown it!) the wiping contact, that wipes on
the coiled wires, between the white piece and the brown switch body the power
travels through to washer like pieces that rotate against each other when the
dimmer is turned, slip the wet and dry GENTLY between the two washer like
pieces, small spray of your chosen brew and then rotate the dimmer again,
reinstall the whole lot in the car again. 3 . EARTH THE GAUGE PANEL, it MUST be
solidly connected metal to metal with the entire dash board, (2 small screws on
underside, scratch paint off to get contact) if not it will flicker on and off,
half light some other bulbs or whatever, also make sure the bulb holders are
solidly clicked in to the gauge panel, twist them slightly once in to make sure
they are contacting metal too. get a test light and follow it out if it doesn't
work after this, check the bulbs too, they usually go forever but could be
blown, honest john

I've got 4 good original hubs, but I don't want to risk them so I'm
looking for a substitute for daily use that is cheap, but still looks
good.

Also I'm after key blanks as I only have a single set and want to get

As per our phone discussion yesterday, and for other readers who may be
interested, the top mount is made by enlarging(by drilling) the hole
with the chrome Phillips head screw on the steel plate below the rear
quarter window. Behind this panel are two sheets of metal with a hole
through it. The bolt goes through this then a heavy washer goes next
then a nut. All in all it is a very strong mounting point and,
according to Early Bird, meets engineering requirements.

However fitment is not something I would attempt myself.

Hope this helps.

PS the only down side of the lap sash arrangement is you need to undo
the belt to let the handbrake off !!! Darn Ford handbrakes.

Dale, extractors are just the Aussie / Kiwi name for headers!

For a 170, look at Pacemaker or Perrys or Castle (first two my pref).
Coating is worth checking out as it looks good and will add some
durability. Note that extractors made for a 250 will hang down lower
when installed on a 170 or early 200. This is due to the 250 block
being taller. Also be sure you get some that will clear the shock
tower and starter decently (another win for Pacemaker).

Regards, Adam.

Deon

Would appreciate an explanation of the difference between headers and
extractors?

Of the 2 which would you recommend for a 170?

Hi Magpie Magic

I just put seat belts in my XM Coupe.

I ordered them from Stamps Seatbelts in Kangaroo Flat, Vic. They posted
them to me no problems.

They are navy blue (to match the interior), but many other colours are
available. You can get inertia reel but that does not work well on
coupes because of mounting difficulties. I simply got lap sash and they
are fine.

I suggest you call them and discuss your requirements with Neil Stamp,
owner of the business. He is very helpful.

I had Early Bird Falcon fit them.

Cost was around $185 for the belts plus $150 to fit.

As to steel buckles Stamps are not in favour because there is quite a
bit of mucking around (you need to source ones in excellent condition)
and they have to be stress tested. Seemingly everyone in the car game
are very fussy and finicky about belts because of the obvious issues
that may arise if they
fail in an accident. In the end I went with the standard black plastic
buckle and it looks fine (better than I expected) Yes, it's not the same
era as the car, but I was surprised how a "brand new" thing improved the
look of the interior. And the tongue clicks into the buckle perfectly.

Other things worth noting - 1. be very careful with the belt length
measurements. If you allow too much belt they need to be cut and
restitched, and it's hard to find a trimmer who'll modify belts. 2.
Choose a colour that blends in rather than stands out - you don't want
to make a feature of seat belts.

If you wish to discuss further please call me during business hours on
0424-294-573.

Rgds

Hi all, new to the group as a proud new xp coupe owner. I had a 4 door
and xl ute back in the day, but they went when I acquired a wife 11
years ago. Been a long wait to get the dream car.

Anyhow I'd like some advice on seat belts. I want to get a good modern
set up for the sake of my and my families safety, but want to have it
working well without damaging the good original interior of the car.
Does anyone have any experience with this. Ideally I'd like to get
retractable lap/sash belts front and rear in a colour to match the
palomino interior and if I can get them with old style steel buckles
so much the better.

Anyone know a good place to get these, preferably in SW Sydney, but
anywhere in Sydney if necessary. I don't intend to skimp on safety so
I'm prepared to pay what it takes to get the job done right.

Hi All,

I have put together a plan to get smaller orginisation and EXTREAMLY
keen people to help with the prizes for the Early Falcon Nationals.

I am seeking people who would like to brand a prize, say the Joe's
Machanics best XP Falon, or the Peter's Resto's Longest to restore XP
Falcon (that one is mine), or the Big Block Enterprises most extream
build.... And so on.

It is a contribution of $50-$100 or more in the format of a gift
certificate that will be counter-signed, noted and fraud proof
garenteed by myself. Can only be redeamed at your shop, site or on you
r services. So this includes things like $100 towards a rebuild, or
$250 towards a re-spray, or $50 in parts. We even have $100 for a Hogs
Breath Dinner! Come on and help out.

Here is a link to the exact details of the sponsorship for prizes.

Thanks again and call me, 0419 812 302. Dave-at-xpfalcon.com

(ziped MS word format - I can give you PDF if you need.)

Have a look at the Western Australian Early Falcon website, They have
a
comprehensive explanation on how to do the conversion yourself.

We have done this one before. If you use parts from a bosch alt from a newer
model falc then it is easy in an XP. They are both 12V, both use negative
ground, so the only challenge is to get it to fit.
