You need a long socket to get in there, they are available from most
Spare Parts sellers or Repco/Supercheap stores, that length of rod
is the shaft of the motor, good luck with it.

the book says theres a grub screw, but there isnt one
all i need now is a spanner to get in to it as there is a length
of rod that comes off the nut stopping the use of a socket.

Hi Darren,
You are correct the nut on the end of the shaft does screw off, then
just tap the shaft off the collar of the fan (use plenty of WD40 or
similar - down the shaft)that the nut screws onto. The collar is a
expanding type unit so make sure when putting it back together that
the expanding part is widened therwise the nut will just turn.
Unlike the later XM and XP motors that had the grubscrew holding the
fan on this was a real bit of "Ford" ingenuity. Also watch the two
screws that go through the motor and don't attempt to pull the motor
apart, they do not go back together very easily.

darren, i think there is a grubscrew(allen key) into the fan boss, clamping to
the shaft, i might be wrong its been a long time, mark or measure where it sits
on the shaft so you can get it back in the same spot, honest john

which model bumper did you decide on using ?, I know I have an XM/XP
one, not sure on the XK/XL. When I got my XM one rechromed, they
straightened & rechromed for under $300, that was only 6 months ago.

Thanks again John, just a few questions.
   1. As it seems there is a problem with the advance vacuum isn't it
safer to set the initial timing without the vacuum as the manual
   suggests?

   2. I haven't got a tacho so I can't be sure, but the engine does
seem to be idling reasonably low. Certainly looks like I'm getting
WAY too much advance at low revs. Is a problem with the primary
spring the only possible cause here? Is a faulty spark valve in the
   carb also a candidate?

return to initial setting once manifold vacuum stabilizes, if it

Got the latest edition today. Nice photo Dr Falconstein. The whole
clan are very excited about the Bargo run and even more so about the
slot car night at Ingleburn! Hope we get a good roll up for that.
Sounds like a blast.

The email reminders would be real good. You can also put dates in the

Darren, its not about speed ,its dial up racing, your racing yourself, a 2 speed
would be ideal, once you've got your baseline time, there is nothing you can do
to make it any quicker! its just consistency from there, the final of the 6 cyl
/sidevalve class at the first Sydney races last year had the fastest car and the
slowest car in it,the slow one only narrowly missed out, a couple of hundredths.

   Mark,

Google for the "kevinstang" website. It has good pictures of eights,
nines and commentary on the differences over years of production. Most
of the nine-inches that came with Oz-delivery cars were better models
(LSDs and such) because the diff in itself was an upgrade.

Frustratingly, my mate has just located another narrow 4-stud 8" at
USD$60 but it's near him (Maryland) and getting it here isn't viable on
   its own...

   Cheers, Adam.

A totally O/T note for the greybeards: The '56 Ampol trial is being
presently re-run, organised by the Peugeot Car Club. There are plenty
of non '56 vehicles, sadly no Fords but if it passes near you, still
worth checking out, especially if there's a display or motorsport
section on. Brand aside, you've got to respect a bunch of people
giving their (often pristine) cars a hiding for a month.
