Darren,

In addition to my other reply. It is interesting to note the American 62-64
Falcons were available with four speed 'Dagenham' gearboxes on the both the 144
and 170 sixes. I once queried with the Historic Racing and was informed it was
unlikely to be accepted in Australia despite being, other than left hand drive,
the same vehicle.

   Hi guys does anyone know what the book or publication is called that
   is the History of the Falcon
   it has all the dealer adds from XK to XF Its like a thick magazine
   about 210 pages .
   our club went to Oran Park on Sunday to see the Historic car racing
   and there was a father and son
   that had a yellow XM sedan in group N. its running a 170 with triple
   SU's close ration reverse gate
   3 on the Tree, limited slip diff 4.1 ration 4 wheel drums.
   they need proof that the XM came with with a 200 so they can deal with
   the EH Holden.

Darren,

The Australian Ford Falcon 'The Authentic Collection.(1960-1985) The 1st 25
years.'
Publisher A.C.Bushby.
Copywright 1986.
Acknowleges the 'blessing' of Ford Motor Company.

Comprises much information from original Ford sales and specification brochures.

The 'XM' section suitably describes the introduction of the 'Super Pursuit'
200ci engine to supplement the 144 and 170ci engines.

It does appear though the 200 could only be optioned with the 3 speed
Fordomatic.

Great reference book I have had for years

Graham

I can scan pages out of reference catalogues to show 200's were
available on the XM if you like, just send me an e-mail Darren. The
200 only came out as an auto if that makes a difference. I also have
the book you are talking about and alot of dealer stuff to prove they
had the 200

Be interested to hear how well the DIY demister works when you get
round to hooking it up Craig. Keep us posted please.

brett, sure thats not 34365. that is fairmont sedan 200 motor ,3 speed auto,all
fairmonts were 3 speed. or 34345 fairmont sedan 170 3 speed.
34385 does not appear in the factory model reference chart.

trim 5379 decodes as DO3 champagne.

   my FORD issued XP manual and the 'XPfalcon' (friend in your shed)
   website dont list any model numbers specifically for the fairmont :

   ie model number : 34385

   3 = aust passenger
   4 = ? ( 3 = futura,2 = deluxe etc ) DOES 4 = FAIRMONT?
   3= 4 door buckets
   8 = 2 speed 170 auto

   it has JG34 stamped on it which is a fairmont - just trying to
   decode the model number

   and on the trim code :

   5379
   5 = falcon
   3 = ? (1 = hardtop,2=sedan,4 = futura ) DOES 3 = FAIRMONT?
   7 = ivy gold

yes 3 options, on all models xk-xp
  the base model was a small box mounted down near the left vent box,it has a
lever that swings through 90 degrees air on or air off, blows across to drivers
side under the dash, has duct attachments on the front of coil to go up to
demist nozzles under dash grille. no fan no hot water valve, ram air only,worked
reasonably well at highway speed, need to hold your breath at traffic lights
though!, front seat passenger, gets nothing.

next option was another ram air model, larger box, cable activated water valve
on top,option of demist or whole of car, or 50/50 by cable activation 2 cables
on dash adjacent to ashtray, again effective at highway speed, but low speed it
doesn't do much.

3rd option was the 2 speed fan heater,quite effective in both the early xk-l-m
tin box and plastic box xp form,the drawback of the early one is its sheer
bulk/weight,needs a special short glovebox(good for a packet of smokes and thats
about all!) and is hot water on all the time(no valve) bloody hot around the
feet in summer, the positive is, they rarely block up due to the constant flow.
the xp heater is smaller lighter, has a water valve,drawback is the valve
corrodes too easily and blocks up or jams in the summer, when it finally lets go
it squirts boiling, quite often rusty water all over the drivers feet,instant
zero visibility,and scalds the foot you are using trying to stop before you hit

code numbers , Dont know why.

I have Artic white model has a 5389 number for its trim , but there
is no 8 on the number codes . I beleive its a Charcoal grey colour
which Ive been told is fairly uncommon.
Cheers.

Trying to work out the numbers on an XP fairmont :
  my FORD issued XP manual and the 'XPfalcon' (friend in your shed)
website dont list any model numbers specifically for the fairmont :

ie model number : 34385

3 = aust passenger
  4 = ? ( 3 = futura,2 = deluxe etc ) DOES 4 = FAIRMONT?
3= 4 door buckets
8 = 2 speed 170 auto

  it has JG34 stamped on it which is a fairmont - just trying to
decode the model number

  and on the trim code :

5379
5 = falcon
3 = ? (1 = hardtop,2=sedan,4 = futura ) DOES  3 = FAIRMONT?
7 = ivy gold
9 = single tone + carpets

  enquirying minds wish to know !

  thanks

Most of the rear window demisters of the time were add-ons and
nearly all were electric. A strip electric element with a rubber sucker at each
end held the contraption to the glass; this was the forerunner to the wire in
(or stuck to)
the glass. The old type come up on eBay quite often mainly from UK sellers
there is another fit-all type that came out a bit later where the unit fits
into the back window parcel shelf and sucks air in from the boot and then heats
it, again electrically, and blows it on to the back window.

             Hi guys,

My friend and I were having a conversation about how our old cars rear windows
fog up and

how much of a pain it is. He said that you can retrofit a rear demister into
them. I don't think

you can. Does anyone have any thoughts on this and if you can do it ,how do you
do it?

I think there was a dealer fit option from brand new! I've seen them
listed in an old brochure, but I'd be a bit sus on how well it
worked. It looked like a fan that fitted flush with the parcel shelf
to blow on the rear window. I've never seen a car fitted with one so
getting one would be next to impossible.

Might have to ask around your local automotive shops, but there is a
demister kit available. Consists of 6 or so thin strips that are self
adhesive that you stick on the inside of the screen. It is 10 times easier
to do this with the screen out of the car. When I was car racing a while
back we used them on the windscreen and they are brilliant. All you need to
do then is hook them up to 12volts

As far as I know it was an extra, the website "xp falcon.com" has a brochure on
it with all the
extra's.

If you have a electronic vdo speedo all you need is a sender unit out
of a Xf and later gearbox it will fit where the original speedo cable
came out of the gearbox slip down to a wreckers and grab one I paid
20 bucks for mine. When you have it fitted hook up the wires and
follow the instructions you got with your speedo usually mark out 50
meters press the button at the start and at the end and your done it
should be accurate.
Cheers Tim
P.S it isnt electronic if you can plug a speedo cable in the back of
it.

my xp coupe.

im running a single rail box and centura diff.
with a vdo electronic speedo.

the local ford dealership cant help me they only want to know what it
had in it previously which is no good to me.

and the converters i can find on the net are all for miles not kays.

has anyone done this before or can lead me in the right direction??

info is: single rail box.
          centura diff (not sure on ratio either 3.23:1 or 2.92:1)
          17 inch wheels.
          drive gear is 6 teeth.
