I have found it difficult to adjust the hinges so as to get a nice neat
closure line at the back of the bonnet. I figure it should be easier without
any spring tension at all on the hinges themselves.

I have seen many XK-XL Falcons use the later XM-XP springs to do away with
the rod that holds them up. I have never seen it reversed. Any particular
   reason ?

Thanks John
kind of what I was thinking. Only looking at the XE weber as Ive got one
in the shed.
As far as bigger valves I was only looking at doing the exhaust, ive
done a fair bit of reading and that seems to be the go.
thanks

   Gday all

Im about to start the engine build soon but I want some input to my
ideas. I basically want a smooth running engine with good economy and a
   bit of torque down low.

The head I have here is off a 188/221, from what I can see these were
pretty much the same as the XR 200's???
Is it worthwhile putting bigger valves in it?
Im aiming for about 9:1 Compression ratio. The block has been decked but
I dont know how much until I assemble the bottom end, so the head will
more than likely need a tickle up as well

Im going to put a small cam in it, as its an auto with a 3.2 rear end,
anyone have any experience with the various camshafts out there?

I will be fitting headers, and Im toying with the idea of a Weber off an
XE, as Ive used these before on a 250-2V and had good results.
Pretty sure I 'may' have to jet it down a bit. Will this fit under the
bonnet of an XM. What are people using for a cable accelerator pedal?

Whats the best distributor setup? standard dissy with a pertronics or
try and hunt down a Duraspark like they use in the states?

Thats all I can think of for now, more than likely I will think of
   something else later

   Thanks

Dave, the repro ones aren't Mustang, the latest ones out have holes drilled with
reinforcements behind them to stop them pulling in too much. They only come in
black but can be painted to suit. I have some in stock plain or with 6" speaker
molds in them so you don't have to cut away at the metal.

if you cant get the specific colour, you can always use vinyl dye on a light
coloured kick panel to get it right.

Provided the engine you have is still either a 144 or 170 just stamp the engine
tower number and avoid the hassle.

As I understand Ford use to provide clean unstamped engine blocks as
replacements for the GTHO's

Judging by the passed comments it would seem most States are very hot on
correct numbers but here as long as the engine has some kind of number they are
normally happy.

However if the number looks as if it has been tampered with that's another
matter.

Chances are you original engine is now a collection of razorblades or living
in China somewhere awaiting the heat treatment. The original engine number is
the one stamped into the suspension tower, may be just hire a letter/number
punch set and stamp the original number back into the new block?

Some will recall one of this forum's members races an XM Falcon in Historic

across what I suspect is his Falcon. Have a look at historicracing.com.au

I just picked up a 200 block, but I cant find the engine number. Where

the engine no. is on my 170 is nothing on the 200. The block has been

chemically cleaned. Would this have somehow erased the number? What

should I do as I want to put this engine in my car?

ben, there is a plate similar to a washer under the head of the bolt, it is
meant to hold the head of the bolt to stop it turning in the gaurd, if the nuts
are tight on the thread the force used to loosen them usually overides these
plates, they are approx 50 x 25mm they have a square hole in them, the bolt has
a square section just below the head, there fore if you can hold the plate still
you can undo the nut, the best method i have found is to first apply plenty of
wd40, penetrene or whatever ,to the nuts maybe even leave it a while to soak in,
then using something like a tyre leaver or large flat tip screwdriver slide it
in between the gaurd and the A pillar beside the bolt (lower one up from under,
upper one in from door opening) then using your socket on the nut from inside
turn the nut until you feel the plate at head of bolt hit your lever, allow the
plate to slip under the lever then apply pressure to it to hold it against the
gaurd, if your wd40 has done its job you should be able to hold the head still
using the plate and lever to undo the nut. for anyone else about to do this job,
same applies use wd40 first on both bolts and hold outward pressure on the gaurd
from the very start it stops the plates from disengaging from the gaurd in the
first place, hope this is clear its easier to do it than to describe it!, honest
john

I attempted to remove the guards of my XM today. All was fine until I

came to the nuts inside the car near the kickpanels.

On both sides the nut is just spinning the bolt. On the right hand side

it is the bottom one, on the left is the top.

Anyone got any ideas as to how i get them undone???

   thanks Ben

John, got the ones near the windscreen, its the ones you access from
inside the car. Ill do what you suggested and see what happens. Thanks

at the top at the corner of the winscreen, you can access the threaded insert
via the under dash airvent hole , spray with what ever your favourite brew is,
wait then use vice grips to hold it still, it is meant to be attached to the car
but 45 years tends to seize them up, undoing the bolt often breaks them free
from the body, good luck, i'll get back to you tomorrow night about the other
stuff, honest john
