Description

The Growden family (other spellings include Growdon Grouden) seems to have originated in south-western England, mainly Cornwall and Devon.

We know of four branches of the family, and there may be others. One of the aims of this forum is to try to see if there are any links between them

* The Quaker Growdens, emigrated from Cornwall to Pennsylvania about 17th century.

* William Growden (born c. 1764) married Elizabeth Sandercock at Cardinham, Cornwall, in 1792. Descendants in UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Canada.

* William B. Growden (b. c. 1758) married Ann Cocker in Warleggan, Cornwall, in 1784. Emigrated to Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 19th century. Descendants in various parts of the USA.

* Joseph Growden (b. c. 1775) married Elizabeth Cocker in Warleggan Cornwall in 1800. Descendants known to be in Sheffield, England.

Most branches used both the Growden and Growdon spellings.
