There should be plenty of historical terms for the appropriate
strings. I'll check out the ropes with a neighbour who is a writer of
historical novels on maritime matters.
Can't see any problems with the concept except getting the sails cut
to adjust to the differing stiffnesses of the different sections.
Certainly worth it to be able to reduce mast height in a blow.
