hows it going all. rick here i have a 4.4 v8 with a interesting
problem when you first startup it sounds perfect until she warms up a
bit then it starts tapping like a tappet sound (i,ve replaces the
lifters) when your doing 2500rpm the tapping seems to fade but as soon
as you release the throttle it comes back hardcore. even while tapping
i don,t lose any power or oil pressure. i,ve been told it could be
piston sleave seperation. anyone out there have any ideas thanks in
advance ................rick

Rick try up loading your photos to a web based photo server program
like photo bucket then you just cut'n'paste the URL to the egroup
post. That way we'll be able to see the link and click to the photo.

Hi all

I'm a member of the Canberra and disricts Leyland P76 club. I am hoping to get
some
advice on a few queries I have with obtaining parts and information.

I am currently in the process of restoring my father's Super V8 that has been
unregistered
for the last 15+ years. I'm at the stage of sorting out the engine and the
engine bay. The
original sound proofing material along the firewall and underneath the bonnet is
very
weathered and needs replacing. I've recieved some advice that a substitute for
the original
material is to get some pink bats with carboard on one side and paint them
black. Has
anyone come across other solutions?

I am also hoping you can help me with advice in obtaining a steering coupling
(the
material or canvass-like bit), or whether the Leyland P76 steering coupling is
similar to
that of another car.

I've also been trying to find rubber (as opposed to nolathane) castor rod bushes
but I
suspect that there aren't any rubber ones in existence anymore - or whether
they're
compatible with another car of that era. I've not been successful at all in
obtaining this
part.

At some stage (when I have the money) I plan to have the car repainted. Do you
know the
brand/colour of the dark (greyish or black) background paint that surrounds the
headlights? My father years ago painted this part of the car Bitter Apricot to
match the rest
of the car and I'd like to get it back to looking closer to standard.

I've managed to misplace the plastic clip that attaches to the firewall in the
engine bay and
holds one end of the metal rod (accelerator linkage?) that connects to the
caburettor. Not
sure if there's a difference but I need a plastic clip for a Leyland V8 - as
opposed to a 6.
Hopefully I've adequately described the clip and its function for you to know
what I'm
after.

I'd be grateful for any advice you can give me or if you can point me in another
direction
so as to get the advice from someone else.

Regards
Angus Black

I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH MR ELLERY,
I HAVE RECONDITIONED LOTS OF P MOTORS WITH NO PROBLEMS
I WOULD ADVISE NOT TO MACHINE THE BORES MORE THAN 20THOU!
I KNOW OF PEAPLE MACHINING MORE THAN 20 THOU AND THE LINNERS COMMING
LOOSE DUE TO THE HEAT EXPANSION, WHILE NOT COMMON, IT HAS HAPPENED!
DON'T MACHINE THE DECK OF THE BLOCK, UNLESS TOTALY NESASARY!
DEPENDING ON PISTONS USED AND WORK DONE ON THE HEAD,CLEARANCES AND
COMPRESSION RATIOS CAN BECOME AN ISSUE!
DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE THE CAM BEARINGS! I'VE SEEN CAM BEARINGS
DAMAGED BY CHEMICAL CLEANINIG AND THE WHITE METAL PEAL OFF AFTER
YEARS OF WEAR AND TEAR!
AS FOR MICHAELS COMMENT ON REUSING PISTONS, I FEEL THIS IS FAULSE
ECONOMY? BY THE TIME YOU HAVE THEM CRACK TESTED (LETS FACE IT THEY
DO CRACK!) HAVE THE RING GROOVES CHECKED AND MACHINED TO SUIT A
REPLACEMENT WIDER SET OF RINGS (THEY WILL HAVE 30 PLUS YEARS OF WEAR
AND TEAR, AND NOT BE IN TOP CONDITION)YOU COULD HAVE REPLACED THEM
WITH NEW ONES, CHEAPER!(REMEMBER THAT SOME ROVER PISTONS FIT AND ARE
EASY TO COME BY).
AS FOR COST, I HAVE JUST FINISHED GATHERING ALL MY PARTS FOR MY
ENGINE REBUILD, WITH A COST OF $800 TRADE, RETAIL WOULD HAVE BEEN
AROUND $1200, I DO MY OWN MACHINING AND ASSEMBLY, BUT I FEEL THAT
$1200 FOR CHEMECALY DIPPING,MACHINING AND ASSEMBLY WOULD BE FAIR I
ALLOW MYSELF A WEEK TO DO IT.

I have (only) just completed a series of Engine Dyno tests on a reco P76 V8 destined for a 1989 Range Rover

The P76 engine was supplied by me and was built and tested by Fred James at “Dyno Kinetics”  in Dandenong ( Melb 9791 2454 )

This motor has standard bore and pistons but has a (very) mild cam and uses the Rover heads , distributer , extractors and fuel injection system

As we couldn’t be bothered to remove / rewire the Rover computer to the Dyno , we used a after market “Autronic SM4” to control the fuel injection

In a Range Rover , you need to use the Rover heads as the accessories do not bolt to the P76 heads .

The slightly larger chambers on the Rover heads give an actual compression ratio of 8.4 to 1 and we used 24 degress total advance on the engine

Fred was not attempting to build a “performance” motor as the final customer wanted a basically standard engine

Much could be done to increase the output of this engine but it was interesting to run some tests on a basically stock engine with Rover injection.

Comparisons

150 hp = Rover 3.5 : carbs

160 hp = Rover 3.5 : hi comp with carbs

180 hp = Rover 3.9 : Injected

190 hp = Rover 4.0 : injected

225 hp = Rover 4.6 : injected

224 hp = Leyland 4.4 V8 with Rover injection etc

Not bad for a 30+ year old block design

Most impressive was the reasonably flat power curve and average hp of 173.9 and torque of 280 ftp

We ran the engine in on the dyno and then really let loose on it , with one “run” having the exhausts glowing red hot

I captured the dyno runs on video and I am compiling it into a 10 min clip (80% done) . We turned the lights off on the run with the red hot exhausts and it looks great on the video

I have sent a separate post with some photos and I will let you know when the video clip is available

Enjoy

Rick

To follow on from Michaels advice

Buying a engine that has been reconditioned and has to be reassembled is a no no.  You do not know for sure what was done or how the rebuilder planned to do it.

Re using old parts is a no no,  if it rotates or reciprocates replace, if you don't, don't was your time in the first instance

Decide what you want it to do before you start to ask questions.  It is your engine and your money, do not use your money to build someone else's experiment or dream engine.

What are you going to use it for, every day driving, concourse or donuts outside the cop shop, there are a lot of good sites on the net which can give you info.  Know what gear ratios you have, how many revs to do 100kmh for instance might be a good idea to start at, if you are only city driving daily maybe 80 kmh is the key drive point, try and plan for that.

Petrol is not going to get cheaper, it never has and it aint about to start.  Carburetion information is available.

The standard set up was good.

Some key points

Timing gears and chains, as good as you can afford, is the best rule,

best bearings you can afford.

Best Valve springs you can afford

and only use roller rockers if you have to much money, not enough common sense or want to race the guts out of it in which case let me know and I will send you my address and you cab send the cheque to me

most common brand name pistons are fine unless you want to rev the guts out of it.

With the block, I would want it trued up and line bored for crank and can journals, valve lifters, new liners may be required, the more you take out of the liners the hotter it will run.  Cleaning up oil galleys is a must and making sure water galleries are free from obstruction is not a bad idea.  Block are getting old now and a good crack test would be a good idea as well.

Heads, replace valve guides, valves if you can afford it, valve springs even if you can't afford to,   Unless you are flogging the guts out of it polishing and porting are best left for the trophies you hope to win, ooh a good clean and crack test might be good.

I know it sounds a lot but I have a 352 FE ford Big block to rebuild and the numbers get to a point where you need to do it properly to protect your investment.  The FE will cost approx 8k and that is just a rebuild and replacement or R and R parts, gaskets etc.

The last P motor I did was a cheapie and cost 2.5k and was pumping oil and cracked piston skirts after 10k .

When you know what you want it to do shop around and remember keep the specification you want the same for each quote you get, apples to apples comparison is easier than trying to decode a lot of gobbldy kook.

The local engine re-conditioner Orger engines in Bayswater have no problem with doing an alloy V8, never give it a second thought, and they are well known for their quality, any engine reconditioner  worth its salt in melbourne  would have no problem with an alloy engine, plenty of gen 3 holen alloy V8's have had to have work done on them from what I hear....

Hey did you see the steeering wheel for sale on ebay only $400 !! And the radio $140..not to mention the low brake fluid warning sensor only $300......must go and break the kids piggy bank lest these bargains get away.....

I had a steering wheel repaired a couple of years ago, job was so well done very hard to tell where the join was. Needless to say it cracked again in a coupe of weeks thats just the nature of the wheel....but why doesnt the force 7 wheel crack?

If you fail in the Sydney area, I think I know somebody who will accommodate you in Gippsland, Vic. They did the machining for my engine a few years ago, and have also done increases in engine size etc., when required.

Can anyone reccomend a workshop that does reoconditioning for the
Leyland V8 in the Sydney area. Have so far tried but many places will
not touch it claiming that they dont have the set up for alloy blocks.

Has anyone fitted a 4.6 or 3.9 range rover engine into
a P76 ?

I know the 4.4 P76 engine onto a rangie is a popular
swap but has anyone updated their P76 with a later
engine of the same related family ?

Hip Hip hooray, Thanks michael

For you P nuts I have a couple of spare copies of a boot full in pristine nick, if interested drop me an email.

I am adverse to selling them to a book dealer via ebay and would rather a P nut, I also have a pre release copy which I may be persuaded to part with as I have a copy signed by the Citron crew and Bryson and Green, I saw the Citroen last year whilst visiting Crowther in Rylstone, Jim and the Car are going great, shame the same can not be said for the 36.

On Sunday the vic club attended  the Shannons Australian Classic Car day
at sandown racecourse in the south east of melbourne. This was a big day for
the club as the Leyland P76 (the quintessential aussie car) had not been
represented and we were determined to show the other aussie car clubs the
P76 was not dead and in fact was alive and kicking!

We had 7 members cars turn up a great effort (and 3 members minus there
cars). Thanks to all those who came. The cars included Rays home on the
orange force seven, Erics omega navy targa, Kens bold as brass super my
spanish olive super Marcus white deluxe, Trevor Browns executive, Ricks
super/deluxe/exec.... So the punters got the full deck to have a look at and
with the force in attendance they certainly flocked like bees to honey...

And so they should 99% of the assembled holden ford and valiant
enthisiasts would have never seen a force seven and half of 'em wouldnt have
heard of one....no force seven has ever attended a car show like this in
melbourne or victoria...ever.

Ray recieved reward for attending, winning "best aussie car not in the
big three" by unanimous vote of the organisers.
Well done Ray. All the P's in attendance were daily drivers while it was
obvious most of the other vehicles (with exceptions) were not, nevertheless
we stacked up well, attracted plenty of interest and look forward to next
years show.

Theres no doubt this is the right place to show our cars rather than the
"british and european car day"......where each year I have attended I get
some old dowager on the gate telling me "thats not a british car thats
australian!"......and I wholeheartedly agree.....

Lottie Wallace sends a heartfelt "thank you" to the Victorian club and all the P76 family across Australia for its thoughts about Jim and herself.

Jims funeral was attended by many P76 people including John and Linda Beattie , Mark Whittaker and Mark and Sue Moore . Jim and Lottie have been long standing members of the Victorian P76 club - involved from the very early days. Jim was a P76 identity across Australia and was known by nearly all long time P76 members in all clubs .

Jim and Lottie are being considered for “Life members” of the Victorian Car club for this years AGM  (by member vote) and if successful this would make Jim and Lottie the first life members in the history of the club . Lottie has not been a active member of the Victorian club for some time as she has struggled to attend events and hasn’t been able to drive the P76 for many years - but she is interested in still receiving contact from her P76 friends where her health allows .

President Vic P76 Club

The subject of this book came up again in the last few days and today on the Vic
Rally egroup. Many of the rally fraternity feel that every one of the younger
generation of rally enthusiasts should have the opportunity to read it. As such
is anyone aware of how the moves to have this book re-printed are going? If so
we may be able to co-ordinate it with the Rally people. The Vic Rally egroup
has about 800 subscribers and there are a similar groups in each state and
teritory, one of the subscribers is the editor / owner of Rally Sport News and
may be able to assist.

HI John and others who knew the great man Jim Wallace.
He was always there to have a chat , a coffee and a fantastic collection of
p76 parts and a cup of coffee or even tea when i visited there on many
occasions when I was in melbourne for work. He was so fair with the parts
prices it made me wish that he lived in tassie and as a result there would
of been far more cars on the road than there is now....what a great guy and
a perfect tribute to what a "good and fair" P76 man is like.
Cheers Nick Kounelis...may his cars live on!

What can I say I'm in shock, a great mate who was always ready for a
chat on those rare occasions I just dropped in when I got to Melbourne
and at their place at Sandy Point. P76 technical days with club at
his place alway meant bringing the kids and the togs, they always
seemed to be able to organise great weather and have the pool ready
for the hoards or the BBQ going when we got to Sandy Point. His
access to memoriablia was alway intresting as he manged to gather
things to his collection well before others, such as "the Car Makers"
and the full set of P76 model cars NOT the Trax ones.

We could write a book about Jim and his cars but for those who he
touched with his raspy chuckle and voice all I can say is see ya Mate!

He appeared in local television, papers and magazines over the years

Hello to all,
I am seeking names and addresses of parts suppliers and wreckers of
Leyland P76 models (mine is a 11/73 super v8) that I am starting a
restoration on, it has rust in the usual places and I am particularly
interested in finding if patch panels are available as well as the
plastic parts that have deteriorated over time. I am located in
country Victoria although any information on interstate suppliers
would be appreciated as would any parts available from members. Please
contact me either through the group or my email address if you can
help.
Thank You,
Ian Wickens.

Seems buying that red six, (reportedly 1001) has made you into a sweety simon, and Im not suprised for at $500 it was damned good value. Are you going to restore the car or put it in the paddock with the rest?

I think the six is a smooth motor and once you get used to the moderate pickup compared to the v8 its a nice car to drive and of course handles as well as the v8. You can also join the vic club and its illustrious and ever growing group of six owners.

See you at the concourse...or sooner!

Hi Nick
Thats very intresting thanks for that.
So i take it there are only 2 1001's left out of a possable
13, That is a shame. Maybe James in wa would be able
to shed some more light if there might be anymore around.

Hi Kev.
In my time with the P76 I have seen 2 others number 1s.
They are a Home on the range deluxe v8 4 speed owned by Leyland untill late
1974 then bought by one of its workers for $2300 and John Ernsts one which
is a yellow super v8 4 speed. Warrewyk Williams saw many years ago the super
v8 col auto also yellow 1001 dumped on the side of a  road which would of
been the car shown in modern  motor in the scoop photos with a  cream
interior.
Tony Delucas white exec is a press car but from memory is number 3 or close
to the start. Hal moloney had another press car super v8 4 speed/black
interior which was number 1010.
