Has anyone got a photo of a 4.4 V8 in a Leyland
terrier truck ?

im writing an article on alternate uses of the 4.4
block, and would like to use a photo of the engine in
an actual terrier truck.

Hi Jason,

I understand that you're in NSW. Is that right?

Probably the best way for me to get the balancer is to freight it to the guys doing my motor work.

How can I best pay you? Cash? Card?

Best regards, Phillip

In rebuilding the motor of my Exec V8, we've found that the harmonic
balancer is stuffed. It has heavy damage to keyway and bearing on the
crank shaft which is repairable, but the quote to get it fixed is
giving me heartburn.

Does anyone have a hamonic balancer with metal in good to excellent
condition that they'd be prepared to part with?

I'm not concerned if it needs to be rebonded, as I'd probably do this
anyway.

Any help or leads would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Phillip

I recently took a 4 barrel manifold off a 4.4 litre
engine.

It is a conversion of the 2 barrel dual plane intake
manifold as sent to us from Zetland. The 4 barrel
conversion looked pretty rough welding wise, but all
the angles etc seemed to be neat. I have no doubt a 4
bbl manifold would mount to it.

Initially i thought the manifold conversion was a home
made job, but an old mechanic told me today that they
were made by Lynx in a job lot. He doesnt know when,
but said Lynx did prepare some hot engines and parts
for Leyland.

I do recall that latter part, from reading Hal
Moloneys book and also some references in Evan Greens
'Bootful' book. I dont recall them marketing parts to
the public though (of course i was in a pram in the
70's).

I have seen several 4 barrel conversions pop up on
ebay over he last few years.

Can anyone cast light on the origins of the 4 barrel
manifold conversion ?

Anyone have a cheap 4.4 v8 available for sale or know where one is abailable - to be rebuilt.

I'd like to build up another motor while still running my current one - preferably with a manual box but other wise without trans.

And also preferably in South Australia.

Your right Mick nothing beats the orginals they worked well as long as
they are stored compressed and upright to keep the seals and rubbers
lubed, otherwise Leslie and Sons can repair them.

mean.  The closest shocks from pedders I could find to suit was a rear
VY Holden Ute Shocker designed for a Ute with FE2 suspension option,
this is a high capacity shock and does seem to compress enough.  I
found with this shock I virtually eliminated the rear end stepping out
on corrugations.

Eric Brown sold the Plum Loco Executive to Nicholas Middendorp and
Nicholas then used it at a couple of club events, I have several
photo's of the car when Eric owned it and later with the Middendorp
livery. Nicholas's dad licked the P76 after being introduced to them
by my dad as the P76 was the only company car he could fit 4 foot 40
watt floro's in and still close the boot, he liked the colour because
it reminded him of the Pink Flourecent Lights my dad designed in
conjuction with Toshiba for growing plants and making meat in butchers
shops look good which Middy's then got the sole distribution rights to
sell back in the early 70's. I will try to up load the photos. Eric
was good friends with another Ocean Grove ex-member and between them
owned some unique P76's with Eric's Plum Loco Executive also
supporting a genuine white interior (as per some Force 7's) Eric's
contacts within Leyland meant he also had a unique collection of
memorabilia which included Publication TP875 the complete Product
Training Notes which I now have along with all the original service
bulletins, board games, table cloths from the launch and Car of the
Year Winner banners ashtrays and a huge original Targa Florio poster a
version of which still hangs on the wall at the ex-Leyland dealer
Dwyers Ford and Toyota in Bairnsdale. He got rid of all of this and
was last seen offering MG rides down the great ocean road.

There are certain 'tricks' you should know with gaskets, especially cork
ones when used with very thin oils. You should NEVER coat both sides of
a cork gasket with silicone sealant. The cork is used as it will absorb
some of the oil pressing against it and help make a seal. By putting
silicon on it you are stopping it from doing it's job. Also, when using
a silicone gasket maker only, with no gasket (IMO the best), you need to
put a bead on one edge, the pan is easiest, then put the pan on but
don't tighten the bolts, just put them in enough so it will hold there.
Then after the silicone has almost cured you can tighten them a bit.
Remember they don't need to be very tight, the silicone is stopping it
from leaking, not the tightness of the bolts. On the truck we service,
we use the original cork gasket because we have to (policy) but we coat
each side of the cork in grease (normal thick brown HTB grease) before
putting the pan back on. This seems to do the job as the grease soaks
into the cork, providing a good seal. It also seems to stop the gasket
from drying out. The pan bolts are only just nipped up as well, don't
over tighten cork gaskets as it will destroy them.

Ian
    Two points
     (1) Does the pan have a flat face ( not twisted or distorted )
     (2) Are you over tightning the pan bolts & splitting or distorting the gasket....
Sealers without gaskets do work well ( if once again applied correctly) but the cork composite gasket should only sweat trans fluid after quite a period of time.
I personally would be using the cork gasket checking the things i have mentioned above, as you go on with the job
As for a sealer i would coat the pan gasket both sides with a thin amount of Hylomar. Which in my opinion is the best allround sealant on the market. Yes even better than silicon and not as dangerous if applied over generously like silicon can be.... Hope this helps you out.
Cheers Anton...

Andrew,
Thanks for the advice, the oil is definitely leaking from the pan to body
flange around the 15 holes that hold the pan to the housing, there are no
leaks above this point showing. I am about to go to plan C and fit another
new gasket using Black Hi Temp Silastic gasket maker each side of the cork
gasket, if it was an easier job to remove and drain the converter I would do
that and fill it with Dexron trans fluid, as the synthetic oil is not
compatible with Dexron they must be done together.
Ian Wickens.

Hi Ian, On another car club forum that I frequent,(a toyota one) a
very experienced(and trusted by all) mechanic on there only recomends
the use of 3(tripple)Bond sealer to be used on the pan. No gasket, as
it will allways leak.
This method is very successful in stopping leaks. But of cause, if
you have leaks elsewhere in the tranny, this wont help there. Hope
this helps, Graham.

Adam,

its mine. It was bought in the late seventies by my father (as 2nd owner). About 15 years ago he stopped needing it, so I asked for it to be stored for a year or two. Now, 15 years later, I'm getting it rebuilt.

Starting in January, everything mechanical was removed and is being renewed. I'm upgrading some bolt-on stuff in the vein of a "P76 GTHO", but keeping all the original components in storage in case someone ever wants to return the car to totally original.

I would have hoped to get the car back on the road sooner, but there are a multitude of tiny problems that have to be resolved once you start to play around with original spec. And, I've struck them all.

My current target is to get to some Spring events with it.

Hi

If the auto is a B/W 35,  and if it has been sitting a while, it is quite possibly the selector shaft seals, the leak only tends to show up after the car has been sitting. There should be two seals as the shaft goes from in one side of the boxand out the other, with the selector on one side only. The auto is multi purpose and was used on a variety of cars at that time, with various modifications for each particular car. If your spare parts guy can't find it, tell him it is an early falcon or something similar, still a B/W 35, and he will thenhave a listing for it

All the best

Ray Linden

hi try at least 2 to 3 orings on the dipstick tube or how ever many will fit
on there with a small  amount of silicone
or it could even be the selector shaft seal leaking

Oil leaks from between the transmission housing and transmission pan
surfaces, I have replaced the gasket (cork type) twice firstly dry and
then with sealing both surfaces with ye old style gasket cement but it
continues to weep even when not being used, both sufaces are spotless
and straight, I am using Transmax Synthetic oil.

Do any members know of a better gasket available?

According to the manual there should be 3 1/4 Litres, 5 pints of fluid
used in a refill, this amount does not show on the dipstick and
requires an extra litre to just show on the bottom of the dipstick
checked as per the manual.

I have used another dipstick, measured dipsticks and dip tubes, and
checked the seating of the tube into the housing all checkout as OK.

I do not want to drive it until the oil stops leaking as it may well
not move at all from that point and could be an expensive exercise.

Any suggestions or advice welcome.
Thanks,
Ian Wickens.
