Just an update on my operation from Mt Bindo for the MRC. I should have UHF CB
available, I have acquired a commercial 10 channel radio which will work on UHF
CB but will be limited to the 8 Rpt channels and two simplex. Also UHF CB aerial
will only be a mobile at this stage.

Hi Kev,
I reckon it'll work great on 27MHz. I'll be on Ginini with my 0.64λ
vertical on that band and am looking forward to making contact. I've not
had an MRC contact to the North yet. I've been end-of-the-line the last
few years. This is exciting news.

VK1DA will be on Ginini too, so I guess you'll be talking to him as
well, http://vk1da.info/
Regards,
Mat.
Hi Guys,
Just thought I would say hello as a first time operator in the MRC. I have seen
the activity's of the MRC over the years on the internet on various media and
thought I would give it a go this year. One of the main motivations was that
there appeared to be a lack of stations in Sydney leaving a gap from Canberra to
northern NSW. I chose to operate from Mt Bindo as I have worked Amateur Radio
field days from there before and have worked in to Mt Ginini on various bands
from that location, also have worked lots of location to the North as well.
Not sure how it will go on 27Mhz but keen to give it a go. Equipment will be
modest a stock standard SSB CB and an inverted V on a mast. Don't have any gear
for UHF CB at this stage but will see what I can scrounge.
I will also be operating the WIA Spring VHF-UHF field day as well on the same
day, so should be a lot of fun.
Regards
Kev (VK2KEV)
Hello All,
Just thought Id mention have had a chat with possible stations at Peak Hill &
Gulgong in NSW, which would create a likely link accross to our Barrington Top
Flats & Mt Allywn Stations.
We also have a new Yahoo group member whos considering operating from Blue
Mountains, which may be our link from Peak Hill to ACT.
Im in the process of discussing this further with these people, and hope to get
some more info to you soon.
It would be great to finally link up to Pete & Kerry in NE NSW, who have been in
the MRC for many years, but we've never had a successful link to them.
Tony
Hello All,
Just thought Id let you know Ive updated the website.
I have added a station at Torquay, Vic, and also East Coast Tasmania.
Google Earth links have been updated, but no Google Maps yet.
Tony
Hello Colin and welcome to the group.
Pete & Kerry usually operate from Barrington Top Flats for the MRC, and i
believe most of the DX expiditions.
Pete is usually active on this forum, and Im sure he will reply to this message
or yours, when he finds out he might have a neighbour about 25kms away.
Im in discussions with the Orana Region Amateur Radio Club based in Dubbo, and
hope they can host a team this year, probably as part of the Amateur VHF/UHF
Field day.
Your objective would be to be able to make contact in that direction, as part of
the message relay.
Currently our most northern confirmed station, as part of the chain, is MT
Ginini in ACT. The next confirmed station after that is Pete & Kerry at
Barrington Top Flats, however this distance is not achievable with UHF or 27MHz
ground wave.
Mt Canobolas, near Orange, would be an ideal location, but we are still looking
for a group to fill that location. Do you know of any radio groups in that
area.
Thanks for the message and welcome to the group. I will discuss the event with
you further in the near future. Let me know if you have any updates, and a
little about your likely setup / equipment.
Tony
Hello All,
It has come to my attention recently that this years Amateur Spring UHF/VHF
Field Day has been moved to the last weekend of November, the same weekend as
the Mountain Radio Challenge.
I dont think there will be any issues with these events on the same day, and
will in fact be promoting the MRC to these Amateurs. Im hoping there will be
some amateur groups up mountains around Australia who will come over to our band
for a quick hello, and maybe a message relay or two.
For more information regarding this check the website at
http://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/vhfuhf/
I will update this group with any further information that develops with my
communications with organiser of this event.
Tony 355
Hello All,
I have updated the station location list at www.mrc.cat.net.au
You may wish to have a look, less than 3 months to go.
We are still looking for people north of ACT to extend our link further north,
we have a long distance to fill to our next station in NE NSW, and some stations
in SE Qld.
Thanks
Tony 355

(MRC 2010 - 20th year anniversary)
The 4 frequencies I will be using are 27.355 lsb (call), 27.385 lsb (qso) , 27.555 usb (call), 27.485 (qso) usb and maybe even down on the Kiwi Call and around it, 26.720 lsb. Looking forward to the 4 days, I just hope the 11m band opens for some good propagation.

In the planning stages is a trip up to the Log Dump for this years Mountain Radio

Hi Tony, yes, the trip for the beginning of November is confirmed, 6th-9th Nov. Kerry has 2 weeks off work, I only work a 3 day week at the local hospital. I recently bought a 12m triangle tower, in 3 pieces. I'm setting it up for here at home and for portable work. The main reason for the 4 day trip is to try out the new tower & blow the cobwebs outa the 3 ele portable quad & 4 ele portable yagi, plus it's been awhile since I've been up there.
The trip up for the Mountain Radio Challenge is just an overnight stay, leave early Sat morning & come home Sun afternoon, as the Log Dump is only an hours drive from here at the home QTH.

That would be great, Ive always found it
hard to get members up north from here, even though most of the participants
these days are found via the internet.
Let me know if you have anyone you want me

Hi Tony, I've posted the news about the MRC 2009 on
the SEDX website & also a post in the SEDX Forum. I'll be having a few
talks with the Newcastle Crew to see if they can do some hilltop activations
for the MRC. I'll keep you updated with any news. Will also try to get some
stations to the north of me to do a hilltop activation.
Hi Tony, will be activating the Log Dump at the
Barrington Tops for the MRC 2009. My skype id is pete43se144 . I'm going for my
Foundation Exams in a fortnights time, so if there are going to be other bands
used, I'll be able to work them. I'll email you more details later.
by the way, I clicked on the MRC url & keep getting redirected to some
other site, called OXIDE SEARCH.

It has been suggested we could benefit from a regular (ie monthly / fortnightly

Thanks for the update; hopefully conditions will be more favorable for us this

There will be some other amateur operators
involved; we should arrange some alternative freq’s for you in case 27MHz

We had success one year, when the skip
came good about 10pm, surprising, but it was good that we actually got to chat

Hello All,
I have updated the website (www.mrc.cat.net.au) to show locations of some groups
who have contacted me regarding the MRC this year.
It seems that every second year is a low key event, compared to the previous
year. This year may be that low key event, and an opportunity to try a new
location, or introduce something new.
Please note that MRC 2010 will be our 20th anniversary, so Im hoping to make it
our biggest year ever, hopefully extending our challenge into NSW.
Please let me know if you're keen to participate again this year, and from what
location. I will post again in about a month, and hope to do some updates to
the website during this time.
Welcome to Greg, who recently joined, and is active on the aurfscan forum.

It looks like the weather will be a
challenge for us this weekend, although I hear that the low pressure should be
in East Vic by Saturday evening.
Earlier predictions forecast lightning in Sth Gippsland, but that seems to have
changed, so Im not sorry worried now.
Either way can I suggest we’re all
prepared for a cool weekend, and maybe a few extra ropes and pegs to hold the
antennae steady.
Those lucky enough to be in caravans have
nothing to worry about, and I know my tent is good and sturdy to keep my team
and radios dry, should we be forced to seek shelter.
Hope the weather is forgiving for
all. It’s a contrast to last year when we were concerned about
fires and hot weather.

Yes I’ve spoken with Deno who runs an eQSO node in Gippsland, Vic, he
will be moving his node to the Spec Events room for the MRC, would you be
interested in doing similar with your node?
At least that way we’ll be able to
chat if the skips not running.
To be honest we usually hope the skip isn’t
to strong, as it can sometimes over-run comms between local stations.
Typically my longest ground wave contacts
are at night, when the noise drops to 0 you can have a good chat with someone
with a strength of a 1, if the noise during the day is 3, you’ve got no
chance.
Let me know if you’d be keen to add your
node to this room as well, and what times you’d be prepared to do this.

I've been trying to arrange someone up here in Maryborough, Queensland to go mountain-topping

So far I've had no success but there will be a couple of stations

You'll usually find me, MB 261, in the UHF CB room, or via AU4MBO-L

Hello Ray,
Thanks for the reply.
We have a few people who will be on air from Queensland, mainly Brisbane and
south. Obviously contact to these will only be possible if the skip is running,
not however that the preferred message relay method is via groundwave contact.
Its always been a long term objective to relay the message to Queensland,
perhaps we can aim to this for next year. I think I'll need to allocate someone
to co-ordinate Queensland, would you be interested?
Dean from Gippsland is involed in MRC this year, and has an eQSO node in that
area. There are a few eQSO nodes I think I'll be able to access, hence we have
changed from our usual Ch26 to Ch27 for this year. I'll talk to you about
eQSO, on eQSO sometime soon.
More details at www.mrc.cat.net.au Pls note details will change so make sure you
check the website a couple of days before the event.
