A big thankyou to Stewart for going to all the trouble of organising
an aussie group buy. I recieved my parts in the mail yesterday.

Now all I need is a couple of Megasquirt stickers to top the cases
off !

fwiw, if someone has a relative/friend in the states who could buy on your
behalf, you
could get them to order a WELLS knock-off copy of an EDIS unit from autozone.com
- they also sell replacement coil packs (for 4/6/8 cyl units). Looked reasonably
cheap
for new parts (which are then shipped across the globe).

Also - summit racing (url?) sell higher-power coil packs to replace the factory
(and
oem) version(s). Same problem as autozone - won't ship outside usa.

i've got a 2nd-hand unit coming from the states from 'oddcomp' on the mejajolt
list -
but when that dies/fails ... pain returns .. ;(

ta, thechuckster.

I've never seen/used an EDIS, so I can only comment on
the Bosch. I know Motec specify the Bosch boxes for
their stuff and they are all fixed dwell. I've been
running a single coil Bosch module for 3 years with NO
problems. At the moment it's driven by the Hall pickup
in the distributor. It's a small black plastic thing
with a 7 pin connector.(one pin is tach out and goes
to Megasquirt, nice clean 12V square wave). I plan on
putting Megaspark inbetween the Hall pickup and the
Bosch module(basicaly one wire), and adding a crank
trigger. That way if Megaspark blows up, I just put it
back the way it was.

i am only suggesting the EDIS units as i may be able to get some cheap,
but how cheap i don't know.
in your opinion, would the bosch or the EDIS be a better system? (assuming

I'm planning to use one of the Bosch units with
Megaspark, as i'm running a single coil/distributor
setup. This is the one Motec use for distributor
systems. The Motec website has a lot of info on the
wasted spark Bosch units they use with their more
expensive systems. I think theses are used on quite a
few imports to OZ. Might be an easier source than
EDIS.

Hi again,

i have begun a list of ppl interested in the next group buy. i think
once we have about 8 or 10 kits requested, then it will be worth
doing another Group Buy. how soon that is will depend on how long it
takes to get enough interest!!

i think we will be able to offer:

Megasquirt kit: comprising of the Partial Kit from Bruce and Al, the
Heeger case, and a component kit. this is enough to build you a fully
functional Megasquirt. (these will also be offered individually as
well, in case you either have some already, or wish to get your own
case/components etc)

Megastim kit: NOT the US PCB version, but one that you make with a
breadboard (Jaycar HP9556), and a set of components. it is mounted in
a ZIP case with pot knobs and a cable to the DB37 plug to go into the
Megasquirt. all cable and hook-up wire provided. the schematic is
available in the files section. this is to verify the operation of
your Megasquirt and so you can play around with the tuning software,
off the car.

Megaprogrammer kit: this is not confirmed until we have a good
schematic available. currently it will be the Willete programmer
schematic, again breadboarded (Jaycar HP9556), but as other
programmer circuits become available, we will look at offering kits
for them. this is to be able to re/program the motorola chips.

if there are any other suggestions for things we could group buy, let
me know. (for example automotive quality connectors if someone has a
source?)

Now, the Holden (GM) Commodore VN/VP V6 motor, which are as common
as barkers eggs, has waste spark Direct Fire Ignition. The ignition
is controlled by a DFI module, with dwell?/timing controlled by the
ECU which is a DELCO 1227808.

The DFI module has a dual crank trigger sensor, which uses an 18
tooth wheel and a 3 slot window to determine crankshaft position.

The DFI module will operate in stand alone mode with a set dwell and
timing at 10 DEG BTDC.

The DFI gives a crankshaft reference signal back to the ECU every
120 DEG and the ECU controls timing and dwell via an EST signal to
the DFI module.

Details can be found at the following website :-

http://lightning.prohosting.com/~v8mate/dfi.html

The website provides most of the information EXCEPT for how the EST
signal is derived.

This seems very similar to the Ford EDIS module :-

http://www.dainst.com/info/edis/edis.html

MAYBE the DFI module could be adapted to work with Megajolt Light ?
Of course a fair bit more info would be required .

Food for thought for us poor EDIS deprived Aussies?

Hi Ppl,
is anyone considering using the Megajolt light system that uses the Ford
EDIS module? i've been looking around for a supplier of new ones for
reasonable prices, and would liek to get an idea of which modules would be
needed and if there is interest at all.. i will be grabbing a couple of
EDIS-4 modules if they are at the right price.

Bruce and Al as well as all the components, which Gareth is now
sorting :), we are now just waiting on cases from Heeger before we
ship out to everyone!

The DELCO wasted spark module is fitted to the V6 Commodores. The coil module is quite cheap. It is driven by the Holden ECU and a cam and crank sensor. It is not a stand alone unit.

i definitely agree with that thought.. if they are cheapish and a reliable

investigating what sort of price w can get them for...

i have not heard of this... do you have any good links for more info?

> Did the ford Mondeo or Probe released in Aus. have EDIS ignition ?

as far as i can tell the EDIS module became part of the ECU module after
1997..
anyone have a ford dealership contact?

i really like the idea of having a programmable controller that operates a
commercial unit liek the EDIS, partly because it has ben designed for
rugged use, and is well tested, and partly because of the failsafe 10deg
limp home mode.
while i like the idea of the fullblown Megajolt, i only need rudimentary
features, so i think the MJL is ideal for me :)

one thing i'd like to change on my motor is how the vac advance disappears
when rpm drops below 1300rpm, it doesn't like idling on just 20 deg
advance.... i'd like a feature where i can set the advance just below idle
speed to be higher, like 30-35 so if it trys to drop below, it can't :)

I would be more interested if a DELCO waste spark module could be

Hi,

I'm having big trouble with my V1.01 MS I've installed in a mates car. (V1 MS
with flyback mod, V2 code, 2TG motor, with 4 1.7Ohm injectors). The short story
is - first install went fine - ran around for an hour with no probs, but didn't
test the heat of the flyback transistor. Then ownder put backshell of connector
on and made a few wiring changes. MS blew up, I replaced the FETs, flyback
transistor, and FET driver. Car idles fine, but when PW increases, flyback
transistor gets really hot, eventually causing the car to die. After it cools
down, the car will run again.

I've changed the flyback zener to a 30V 5W one now, and replaced the
TIP42A,1N4001s and the 270Ohm flyback resistor, but haven't tested it. If this
doesn't work, what should I try? I could add a 390Ohm 0.5W resistor to the
flyback circuit with the 30V zener?

Or I could add ballast resistors. What car that I'll find in an Australian
wrecking yard should I pull the resistor pack from? I'm after a quick solution -
the car is meant to compete in a rally the weekend after next.

Hi, Steve

What a pity I live in North Queensland. I was just thinking (oh, I
shouldn't do that - makes my bloody head hurt)- would it be possible
to utilise the conferencing facilities of Yahoo Messenger, and maybe
get together online sometime and having a yak, er, discussion bout
Megasquirt.

If each of us had YM, and added each other to their list of friends,
it should work - just need to set a time, and then invite those
people to join a conference - what do you think??

Barry

Hi All
Can anyone help out with some info on my injectors,
0280 150 726, Bosch, Blue top. There the factory XF falcon ones, but
were used from late '86 onwards (unleaded). I have the flow rates for
the earlier yellow ones, but am stuffed if i can find flow rates for
these suckers.

np, as long as we can all learn from them :)

i think O2 sensors need to be above 350C for them to work properly.. and
cars can have a problem when idling as they go too low in temp.

i heated sensor would probably be the better way to go...
i don't know... they are pretty solid things.. they pull around 1 or 2
amps and its just a resistance heater.. it is all enclosed so i imagine it
would last a while. goo dquestion tho...

> Are EGO sensors sensitive to moisture?

in the exhaust gas? from my uni work i think that moisture in the exhaust
gas would increase the avaialble oxygen.... but it should not affect the
zirconia sensor... unless the sensor got wet and then heated too quickly.
it's often recomended to have them pointing downwards so moisture will not
collect at the sensor when engines are shut off. as for the outside of
them? i think it could be water proofed, but they look liek they'd be ok.
as long as your connections are water tight.

> Are water temp senders sensitive to raw water.

in terms of salt water? since they are brass they will be fairly corrosion
resistant.. again as long as the outside wires are watertight they should
be ok.

make the connections water tight and all should be ok :)silicone a rubber
boot over them maybe?

Hi all. I'm new to the MegaSquirt and Fuel Injection in general. I have some
questions some are not entirely MS specific sorry for being off topic

I imagine that a 4 wire EGO sensor would be mandatory in a water cooled
exhaust manifold due to low exhaust temperatures. Is this a correct
assumption? Do EGO heaters burn out when operating 100% of the time?

Are EGO sensors sensitive to moisture?

Are water temp senders sensitive to raw water.

Does anyone have any comment on any/all sensors in marine environment?
Tricks and traps?
