I haven't been here in a while and wish it wasn't on such a sad
occasion. The following email was received today from Dirk Boelman in
Wisconsin.
Friends,
This message is being sent to inform you about the unexpected death
of Patrick Spielman. This is a sad day for everyone in the scroll
saw community. Pat is responsible for the resurgence in interest in
scroll sawing that began in the early 80's, and has long been a
mentor and good friend to a great many of us in the industry. His
books have taught many people how to use the scroll saw, and have
provided us with countless scroll saw patterns and projects to test
our skills. He will be sadly missed.
His obituary, copied from The Green Bay Press Gazette, reads as
follows:
Spielman, Patrick E. "Mr. Pat"
Patrick E. "Mr. Pat" Spielman died suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 27, at
his home in Fish Creek as the result of an apparent heart attack. He
was born March 17, 1936, in Spring Lake Township, Minn. to Andrew M.
and Della Jean (Ince) Spielman. Patrick graduated from University of
Wisconsin-Stout in 1958 with a Bachelors degree in Industrial Arts.
He was married to Patricia "Mrs. Pat'' Rogers June 7, 1958. He spent
27 years as a high school woodworking instructor, 23 of them at
Gibraltar High School. Through use of hands-on techniques he inspired
his students to create innovation and practical projects. Motivating
his students to apply themselves and develop their talents was his
passion, and he leaves behind hundreds of dedicated students as part
of his legacy. Patrick was a world-renowned author of over 65
woodworking books with special editions published in several
languages. He began working on his first book at the age of 24, and
continued authoring books, including two current projects, over the
span of his 46 year career. In addition to his success as an
entrepreneur, he was a sought after process and design consultant to
industry leading (woodworking equipment) manufacturers, and a
respected spokesperson for innovative and quality industry products.
His entrepreneurial ventures were a result of his innovative spirit
and creative mind. Patrick, along with wife Patricia, began a
business out of his workshop in 1974 with his own hand-crafted
products, turnings, signs and cedar lawn furniture. The business grew
to include consignment and manufactured products and moved to its
current location in downtown Fish Creek in 1982. In March of 2003,
Patrick was honored with the James Huff Stout Award. The honor is
given to a distinguished alumnus for their work in enhancing the
prestige of UW-Stout and enriching the lives of those touched by
their work.
Pat is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; son, Robert (Bonnie),
Baileys Harbor; daughter, Sherri (Luke) Valitchka, De Pere; daughter,
Sandra (Bernie) Friedenfels, Jacksonport; two grandchildren, Zoe
Samantha-Ann Valitchka; Sophia Marie Friedenfels, and a third
grandchild expected in November; and sister, Winnifred (Andrew)
Schoenbauer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Donald and
Robert; and step-father Nick Wolf.
Friends may call Monday, Nov. 1 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Casperson Funeral
Home in Sister Bay. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 2 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Fish Creek with Pastor
Michael Brecke officiating. Burial services will follow at
Blossomburg Cemetery in Peninsula State Park, Fish Creek. Please join
the family for a celebration luncheon at the Parkway Supper Club in
Fish Creek at approximately 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of
Patrick Spielman. Donations may be mailed to: Patrick Spielman
Memorial Fund, c/o Baylake Bank, Attn: Judy Smith, P.O. Box 46, Fish
Creek, WI 54212.
If you would like to send a note or card to his family, I am sure
they would appreciate it. Please send them to: The Patrick Spielman
Family, 3771 Gibraltar Road, Fish Creek, WI 53818
Please share this news with your scroll sawing friends.

Tom,
I cut your anchor clock from the December 2003 Australian Woodworker
on some Queensland Maple. It was a nice pattern to do and finished
nicely. A picture of it can be found in the 'Brett Miller' Photo
album.
Brett
Yes an earlier thing I started a few
months prior to my new scroll saw. I enjoy creativity, I use to etch glass,
sandblasting after acid etching.

I am a fairly new member and have posted some pictures of what I have
been up too. Learning really and would appreciate any comments about
my work. People have been stoping by and asking me how much for this
or that and I frankly haven't a clue! I began three months ago mostly
for the enjoyment so at this point any input is welcome.
Yes thank you and a "HAPPY NEW YEAR" to you all too. Hope it's better than the
last two have been.
Regards to all,
Lesley

I don't know whether you are interested or not but for hard to get to places for
sanding I always go to the supermarket and get a packet of those Emery Boards.
You can get them from Coles for about $2 for a pack of eight.
I use them for my celtic crosses.

Ok whats the best way to sand Fretwork besides a sanding blade on the
scroll saw? How would one do it for production and get it done in a
resonable time?
How about staining the wood? Trying to get a brush in all those thin
cuts is a pain. Got to be a better run free way. What are you guys doing?
How do you take care of the edges of plywood fretwork?
Thanks,
Donny

Donny,
I use my B&D mouse sander working through the various grades of papers to
bring it to a smooth finish, for me this gets rid of a majority of the
'fuzzies' left after cutting and I use an emery board or my small files to
get any that are left over. If you have some delicate work that you are
sanding, put the piece you cut out back in there and it will keep it stable
enough so it doesnt snap off.
I have not stained any of my wood, I coat most of my work with a few layers
of boiled linseed oil, will either brush that on or if there is a lot of
small inside cuts I will dip it in a container of BLO, wipe off the excess
and let it dry

Hi there,
I'll try and find the pattern for these celtic crosses as I have sold all the
crosses I made so can't take any more photos of them.
Thanks,
Lesley

Lesley,
Photo makes it hard to see the detail of some of the crosses, but from what
I can see they look great. Hope you havent gone cross eyed from making them.
You might want to put the pictures into an album.

indivdial emails of your membership. This site is good for all its

works out a way that all messages do get checked first I will help
check them before they are posted. Please don't give up on this site
