Hello everybody,

I have just joint this mailing list of QKM discussion forum. As an international student, I am pursuing the DBA program at SCU, Australia. My topic is in the area of KM and Competitive Advantage and I am thinking of the possiblity to do an online survey for my data collection. My key informants should be senior executives at organisations with a sample of about 300 usable responses.

If anyone of you has suggestions of how to do such an online survey, please share with me. Thank you so much for your attention.

Best regards,
Cindy

Hi Cory,

I think the informal setting could be a good opportunity to bounce ideas of each other.

Subject: [qkm] Moving Forward

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would just like to bring you up to date with what we are looking to do with the QKM group moving forward.
As you would be aware Belinda Thompson has recently resigned as the Chairperson for the QKM Forum. I would again like to thank Belinda for all the work she has put in in keeping this group together and moving forward. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to seeing her contribute as a 'normal' member.
As you may also be aware I have taken ton the role of Chairperson. This all happened at a gathering of the steering committee on Friday. Where we have made the following decisions. I would like to sahre these with you and get any feedback or suggestions.

  1. The Steering Committe will be disolved apart from the role of Chairperson (me). We would now like to invite any interested peopel to assist with coordinating Forum activities. Previous members are encouraged to apply. We are looking to have a steering committee of 5 (looking for 4 volunteers). We are not going to overly formalise this with an election. If we have more than 4 people hold their hand up, I will have a chat about their ideas and motivation and work out the best mix of roles and responsibilities. This could be used as a development/learning opportunity or an avenue to give something back to the group. Please contact me on cory.banks at gmail.com if you are interested.
  2. For the last few years we have tended to have a low period between April and June. We are suggesting that we run with a shcedule of bimonthly gatherings (next in June) with smaller activities organised if and when they come up (Eg: KM Guru in town).
I have had an idea that I would also like to share with you and get a feel for your views.
After Fridays meeting a few of committee members were able to catch up over coffee and talk about what they are doing in thier roles. This was a fantastic sharing experience and somethign which I realised I am sorely missing out on. Talking with people who understand what you do and what you are trying to achive. I would like to give other people the opportunity to experience this. So here is what I am suggesting.
  • People volunteer to participate in a coffee catch up.
  • These are held with 3 or 4 members in the alternate month to forums or more frequently if it starts being popular.
  • There may be more than one group meeting at a time.
  • The group is randomly selected from volunteering participants and membership changes each time the catchups occur.
  • About a 1 hour duration.
  • A coordinator is randomly selected from the group and they are responsible for organising a time and place. We sill attempt to rotate this responsibility.
  • During the conversation people should discuss what they are doing and the challenges they are facing.
  • If the group comes across something very interesting that they beleive should be brought to the attention of the wider group, it can be raised online or at the next forum.
So what do you think and are you interested. If you want to volunteer for these mini KM Cafes then please contact me.
We will shortly be circulating the agenda for the remainder of the year. Look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks
Cory Banks

Hi Cory,

Early morning or late afternoon/after 5pm meetings would suit me
better. Meetings being held in a more informal setting is a good idea
as long as the environment is not too noisy.

Hi Cory,
I'm also keen to participate. Meetings in the early morning and late
afternoon works well for me also. I'm particularly interested in
discussing knowledge sharing in the context of professional services
environments. Is there anyone else who may be interested in that
topic?

Denise

Well so far only a couple of people have volunteered to participate in
the suggested Cafe Catchups.

Cafe Catchup: Group of 3-4 people agree to meet at a cafe to talk about
what they are doing at the moment related to KM. If the conversation
uncovers some learnings that should be shared then these can be posted
on the Forum list or discussed at the face-to-face Forum.

So I am again looking for anyone who wants to talk with KM peers about
the work we are doing and the challenges we face.

Please let me know if you are interested. If you are not interested
could you provide some feedback as to why this type of activity may not
suit your needs.

Thanks

Hi Cory,

I am very keen to start this type of interaction. I htink the KM Cafe
Catchup is a superb opportunity to share in a smaller, often less
daunting,environment.

Sometimes it can be hard to get some airtime in a big group and when
there is a planned presentation I think we all relish the opportunity
for the networking which occurs over coffee in the breaks.

I work at South Bank and am more than willing to travel throughout
Brisbane to meet others at a Cafe Catchup. South Bank has some great
spots too!

Cheers
Chris

Are there others on the Sunshine Coast who would like to run a cafe up this way?  If so, there are a number of things we are trying which may be of interest.

Good afternoon all,

Just a quick note to advise that I have resigned from the post of QKM Forum Chairperson due to personal and work commitments.  I would like to thank all of you for your support over the past couple of years - I've learnt a lot and have met some fantastic people during my journey.  I'm confident that in 2007/8 (and beyond) our new Chairperson (along with the Steering Committee) will take the QKM Forum to a whole new level of operation.

And now for the announcement...our new Chairperson is Cory Banks.

I'm sure this will come as no surprise to most of you as Cory has been actively involved in the Forum since its inception.  Cory currently works for Suncorp-Metway as their Specialist Knowledge Management in the Corporate Projects Division and brings with him a wealth of experience.  Please make Cory feel welcome as he launches into the second half of 2007.

I wish you all the best and will see you at one of the fantastic QKM Forum events scheduled for 2007.

Thoroughly recommend this activity to those who can make it.

Last year I presented to the group ans was quite impressed by their questions and recommendations.

It was enlightening for me to have a number of groups looking at my issues from different perspectives and opening my eyes to assumptions I had made.

Truth be tols I have yet to get through all of the documentation and recommended reading the students provided but it is on my to-do list.

If you have the opportunty, give it a go.

Hi everyone

I know this is short notice but in the past members of QKM have expressed interest in meeting / interacting with my KM students.  Next Tuesday (5-8pm in Z205) I am running a Living Case Study.  My guest will be Grant Leslie from Water Services Authority Association.  He is flying up from Sydney to present this.   He only agreed to this yesterday – that’s why the timing is a bit tight.

As the semester end nears I run a couple of living case studies where org representatives stand up in front of my class and present a KM problem they are experiencing.  I keep it fairly structured – it goes like this:

1)       Guest presents problem (20 mins)

2)       Teams review their KM tools / techniques / frameworks and formulate 2 questions each for the presenter (15 minutes)

3)       Q&A (2 questions max per team)  20-30 minutes

4)       Teams prepare initial advice (20 mins)

5)       Teams present 2-3 minutes their initial advice and suggestions for further reading

6)       Over the next week teams write up 3-4 pages on their advice (assessable item) – wouldn’t expect the industry visitors to do this

So my invitation is to any industry KM practitioners who would like to come and participate as a team – you can take on my post-grad and under-grad students (several of whom are pretty sharp!)  You never know, you might pick up a trick or two.

These are very popular sessions with my industry participants who in the past have included Cory (last year) from Suncorp; Hewlett-Packard; BDO Kendalls; Qld Dept of Transport; QUT International; McCormick Rankin Cagney; RTB Consulting and a couple of others.

I can probably accommodate one team of about 6-8 industry KM practitioners.  If you are interested please drop me an email.

Greg

Sorry for any cross-postings.

The brochure for KM Australia has been finalised and we have included
many new initiatives this year – one the most exciting ones is that we
will have Dave Snowden and Etienne Wenger discuss and debate across a
range of subjects in a full day interactive workshop.

If you haven't done so yet please participate in our survey:
http://www.ark-group.com/Surveys/TakeSurvey.asp?SurveyID=522nl4007nm2I
for the chance to receive a complimentary pass to the event(workshops
not included). Fortunately, we have enlisted the help of the above
workshop leaders in helping us make the choice. The survey ends 8
June 2007 and the people who will receive the complimentary will be
chosen on 15 June 2007.

Information Management Not Just for the Public Sector
It comes as no surprise in a knowledge economy that information
management
is critical for all organisations. Making the processes of
capturing and
managing information in the easiest way possible will reduces staff
resistance and increases the likelihood of a resource rich corporate
memory.

Join us on May 29, 2007 for an informal lunch with Anne Cornish of
Records
Solutions. Anne will share with us her views on how to manage your
information the easy way through the use of tools and processes and
will
consider the issues and possible solutions currently being
experienced by
all organisations when trying to manage information

Title:   March QKM Community Forum - Knowledge Sharing and the Ageing Workforce

Date:   Thursday 29 March 2007
Time:   14:30 - 16:30
Location:   Community Room - BCC Library, Brisbane Square
Street:   266 George St
City State Postcode:   Brisbane QLD 4000
Phone:   Host: Chris Young 07 3002 9524
Notes:   Many organisations are facing the challenge of a loyal but retiring work force contrasted with a new generation who are happy to swap roles and companies frequently. In either scenario the company loses valuable knowledge. Often organisational strategies focus around recruiting and retention but neglect to examine actual work processes and critical decision making. They neglect to create processes for knowledge transfer and harvest learnings to be re-integrated in a useful manner.

Come along to gain an insight into how knowledge management practices can help alleviate concerns by finding ways of targeting and addressing such issues.

Presentation

Guest presenter, Tess Brook, will cover a range of topics including:

> Keeping it real – understanding the organisations operating maturity
> Capability of change
> Strategic decision making
> Organisational decision making
> Operational decision making
> Capacity to remember

Practical Application

Tess will also provide a practical framework for identifying key decision points in processes which are consequently critical points of knowledge transfer.

Your assistance is required.

I am currently modifying some coaching materials for After Action Review & Peer Assist facilitators and I am looking for a term to describe why findings from these activities should be recorded and made available for people who were unable to participate directly or may join the organisation next week.

I am describing this with anecdotes but would also like to give it a 'name' and think something might already exist. My brain seems to be asleep. Things that came to mind were 'future proofing' or 'time independence' but I feel these don't adequately describe what I am trying to communicate, nor do they exactly roll off the tongue.

I realise I may get some verbose verbage from this community but I am willing to start with some multisyllabic terms and try and bring it back to plain english from there. If someone has already done this then that saves me some time. (Not cheating,  just working smarter)

Thanks

Cory,
What a fantastic idea! I've now added another few from my shelves. I
have to say, these ones never collect dust.

I also could not speak highly enough of one of your suggestions -
Learning to fly! It would have to be the best, practical, easy to
understand and logical books I've read on KM. The new edition also
comes with a cd in the back which provides templates etc. Just
fantastic.

Have a look at the list under Database (in the pink column on the left
of the yahoo screen).

Has anyone got any other goodies or comments on those already listed?

Cheers
Chris

Just in case you might be interested…

QUT staff (including sessional / part-time staff) and QUT students have full access to this and many other databases through the library.

This is one of the many benefits of being a QUT student or part-time tutor.

Subject: [qkm] Journal Trial Offer

I received an email newsletter from Emerald Insight (online journals) the other day and it included a trial offer to their new Management First product offering.

Basically they have created a number of toolboxes related to specific topics and made them avaialble through a searchable interface. The resources in the toolbox vary from Journal Articles, Executive Summaries, Guru Interviews, Management Reviews and Management Briefings.

The Topics include Management and Leadership, Marketing, Change Management, Strategy, Human Resources, Knowledge Management, Healthcare Management, e-business/IT/Finance, Quality Management and Public Sector.

The subscription would normally cost a bit over $4000 AUD per annum but they are currently offering a free 14 day trial.

Have a look and see if there is anything you might like. http://first.emeraldinsight.com/index.htm

Have a good weekend.

Time to scan the bookshelf and share a list of your recommended resources on Knowledge Management.

Share your experiences with the models and methods of different authors by replying to this post.

Here are some on my shelf to get us started:

  • Learning to Fly - Chris Collison & Geoff Parcel : Best practical KM resource there is.
  • Working Knowledge - Thomas Davenport & Larry Prusak : My first KM read that started me on this journey.
  • The Hidden Power of Social Networks - Rob Cross & Andrew Parker : Great information on the mapping and analysing Social Networks.

Also load your recommended titles into the Recommended Reading database on the site here:

http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/qkm/database?method=reportRows&tbl=3

I would like to provide this list to a few of the bookstores in town and see if they can at least get one copy onto their shelves.

Happy reading.

Cory
