Subject: [qkm] Social Network Analysis of QKM

I have recently been able to get use of a new Social Network Analysis (SNA) online package from Optimice for a couple of months (free). (http://www.onasurveys.com)

I thought it would be a nice practical exercise for those who want to learn how to do an SNA (me included), that we could do it on ourselves as a network of KM practitioners.

Those who would be interested in participating in this learning activity please let me know?

Anyone expereinced SNA gurus that would like to show us the way?

Thanks

Hi Group,

The ACS KM-Forum turned out very well. For those of you who missed it, you
missed out on a wonderful, entertaining, and thought-provoking presentation.

With some two-&-a-half dozen people showing up, we will definitely be going
ahead with the KM Special Interest Group (although we still yet do not have
a confirmed sponsor). Our next get-together is scheduled for late November
- I'll post here the exact date when finalised, and the ACS website will
have the details as well.

Hope to se you all then.

With the rapid spread of collaboration tools such as SharePoint, the
opportunity for new approaches to intranets and information management

Are they a replacement for intranets and document management systems,
or do they sit alongside? Where should initial projects be focused?

This industry briefing provides simple but effective models for
answering these questions, as well as helping to target collaboration
efforts for greatest impact.

Run by Step Two Designs, and presented by James Robertson, this
session will give you the latest thinking on how to make collaboration
work in your organisation.

The next session is to be run in Brisbane, as follows:

Good morning,

I hope everyone has had a good break over the weekend and is ready and raring on this rainy Brisbane Monday morning.

Just a bit of house keeping for the group. We are all able to sign up to this group with Yahoo! accounts but we do not necessarily have a list of who belongs to the group and what they do.

We have created a contact list in the database area of the site (http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/qkm/database) and would like for people to add their details.

There is a restriction on the use of this contact list. Anyone found to have used this list for promotional or soliciting purposes will find their access to the group removed. If you cannot participate with such a restriction then I suggest you move along.

If you are contacted by people for promotional purposes, who obtained your details from this list, please let me know (cory.banks@...).

So feel free to share your details so we know who's who in the zoo.

Hello everyone,

Due to the unability to send an attached file to the grouplist, the participant information sheet content will be presented as below for your reference:

Your are invited to participate in a study to investigate the relationship between a firm’s knowledge management capability and competitive advantage with particular relevance for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Australia. This research forms part of a Doctor of Business Administration thesis being conducted by Que T. N. Nguyen (Cindy) and supervised by Dr. Philip Neck at the Graduate College of Management of the Southern Cross University in Australia.

As you may be aware, in today’s dynamic turbulent market place with rapid and unpredictable changes, firms are required to adapt by developing new knowledge to generate new skills and capabilities. Knowledge management has emerged as one of the more important issues organisations face when attempting to remain competitive. Thus, this study aims to provide a better understanding of how organisations manage knowledge to achieve and sustain their competitive advantage in the current complex and challenging landscape.

Risks and Benefits

There are no risks or costs associated with participation in this survey apart from some of your valuable time. The benefits of the survey will assist us to better understand how organisations manage knowledge as an organisational capability. The research will also provide business executives with useful insights on how the firms need to be effectively managed for their overall knowledge management capability to leverage, exploit, and sustain competitive advantage. The key findings of this study can be provided to you, if requested, in a summary report format.

Responsibilities of the Researcher

It is our duty to make sure that any information given by you is protected in a secure place and kept strictly confidential. Your name and other identifying information will not be collected or attached to any data collected. The responses collected will be analysed and presented as overall data. Only my research supervisor and I will have access to individual survey responses. The research findings may be submitted for publication but no individual responses will be identified.

Procedures to be followed

You are asked to logon to the online survey by clicking on the web link at the bottom of next page. When you click on this link, you will be taken to the Online Survey and you are asked to complete all the questions presented. The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete, including two main sections. When you finish the survey and click on the ‘SUBMIT” button, your data will be automatically stored as anonymous data in an electronic file.
Freedom of Consent

Your participation in the study is purely voluntary. Clicking on the web link at the bottom of next page is considered implied consent of participation. However, if you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw your consent or to discontinue participation at any time during the process without consequence. You may also elect not to answer any question asked.

Hello everyone,

I am a doctoral candidate at the Graduate College of Management of the Southern Cross University (SCU) in Australia. As part of the course, all candidates are required to undertake a research project that examines a significant issue relating to business.

The issue I am investigating is the relationship between a firm’s knowledge management capability and competitive advantage particularly in respect of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Australia. In today’s dynamic turbulent market place, knowledge management has emerged as a powerful weapon for organisations to remain competitive. While SMEs critically contribute to the economic growth of a country, this study will attempt to provide business executives with useful insights on how the firms need to be effectively managed for their overall knowledge management capability to achieve, leverage, exploit, and sustain a competitive advantage.

The questionnaire of this online survey should be filled out by the senior executives of SMEs who are knowledgeable of their organisation’s knowledge infrastructure and process capabilities as well as its competitive advantage. Completion of the survey is voluntary and you may withdraw at any time without consequence by closing the internet browser. Data collected is anonymous, strictly confidential and will be kept in a secure place.

If you are willing to participate, please read the attached file (Participant Information Sheet) for further details and complete the questionnaire before 27th August by clicking on the following web link to take you to the survey:

Please answer all questions. Your assistance in completing the survey is greatly appreciated. If you would like to receive a summary of the research results when it is available, please send me a requesting email to the address given below.

The ethical aspects of this study have been approved by the SCU Human Research Ethics Committee. The approval number is ECN-07-108. If you have any complaints or reservations about any ethical aspect of your participation in this research, you may contact the Committee through the Ethics Complaints Officer, Ms. Sue Kelly (phone: 02.6620.9139, fax: 02.6626.9145, email: skelly@...). Any complaint you make will be treated in confidence and you will be informed of the outcome.

Thank you very much for your time and I do look forward to your participation.

Denise,

How ever long people want to/can spend.

I woulds say up to an hour but if people are intersted in talking to fellow practitioners about the issues and opportunities they are facing then take as much time as you need.

Thanks

Hi everyone,

KM Australia 2007, Knowledge, Discovery and Collaboration has come and gone and we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated and became involved with its success.

As you may know, this year we conducted a survey and talked with past attendees to find out what they would want out this year's KM event.  We created more room within the exhibition area itself, we provided a table format to allow for more interaction, rather than the standard theatre style, plus we tried something new with the KM Arena (a networking forum) and this proved to be a great success.

As with everything, when we tried to provide for something, another concern came up.  The sound at the event wasn't the best a certain times and we tried to mend that on Day Two, but the venue doesn't really allow for it.

There have been some good conversations taking place in the blogosphere and some are sharing some slides from KM Australia 2007:

Dave Snowden's blog: http://www.cognitive-edge.com/2007/07/anticipation.php#comments

Chris Fletcher's blog: http://adventurekm.typepad.com/adventures_in_knowledge/2007/07/km-australia.html

Brad Hinton's blog: http://bradhinton.wordpress.com/

Keith De La Rue's blog: http://delarue.net/blog/2007/07/

Stay posted, as we will be publishing some interesting statistics on the event, plus we will be asking all of you where we can improve upon next year; change of venue / change of direction of event(more technology or less) / location(would Melbourne be a good change – but would it affect whether or not you attend)

Thank you again for all of your support and please visit www.arkgroupaustralia.com.au for all of our other upcoming events, plus go to www.kmasia.com which is being held in Singapore, 29 -31 October 2007.  If you are an attendee to this KM Australia 2007 and want to attend KM Asia 2007 – please let us know, and we can work out a special price for you.
