Hi all
I'm an apology for this one as I'll be interstate.
The topics I'm really keen on progressing when appropriate are 'lessons learned' - especially in major infrastructure projects - and alliance knowledge transfer. June 2008 Journal of Management Studies has a special edition on inter-firm knowledge transfer; there are strong messages in this for 'practice'.
Hope to see you in July
Kind Regards
Kate

Hi Cory,

I’m looking forward to being there too.  I may have to leave a little early though.

Kate’s topic of Lessons Learnt is very important to us.  We are looking at a couple of ways of identifying them, contextualising them and transferring them.

Likewise, your work on innovation will be very interesting.  About 18months ago we got really into innovation and tools to assist innovative environments and thinking.  I’ll bring what I can.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Cory

I’m really pleased that after a long, long absence I am able to attend.

One of the things I’m working on at the moment is Lessons Learned processes for major engineering projects in Qld, WA and now Vic.   So would be interested in throwing some ideas around on this.

Cheers

Apology.  We seem to pick days when I have a management meeting on.

For the Cyclone Larry response analysis from QFRS I worked with Brian Donaldson to apply some of David Snowden's techniques.  The sessions over two days went well with the approach distilling the key issues for lessons learnt and improvements that subsequently used to prepare the report and recommendations.  Happy to discuss with you sometime if it helps.

Hi again Chris
I agree strongly re the connections.
I always seem to end up with lots of dotted line relationships between IT, OD, L&D, library, Records etc, I guess reflecting the transdisciplinary calling of KM. Another factor is the sheer range of initiatives that contribute to the 'knowledge stuff'.
I'm keen to catch up for a chat over coffee re how some of the places I work slice the pie across functions.  Give me a yell on mobile is this would be of interest. 0418724902

Thanks Kate,

I guess I am seeing more and more strong overlaps. Of course I'm
working from my own example – and I'm seeing KM work around culture is
seen as OD, building and sustaining capability through KM initiatives
generally perceived as L&D, facilitation of groups for K sharing
(anecdotes etc) again seen as OD along with innovation and
collaboration.

Maybe we're communicating too simple a view of KM. Mind you, we are
going through a restructure and HR is being heavily hit – perhaps they
are scrambling to validate their own roles any way they can – as is KM.

Cheers
Chris

I must say I have seen and heard of a few combinations where km related activities and services (whether formally recognised as KM or not) are offered by HR (L&D, OD, Capability), Library, IT, Operations, Strategy, Business Excellence/Improvement and Innovation.

In my current organisation KM sits with Capability (outside of HR) with Libraries under Operations and L&D under HR.

I have been talking more about knowledge being used in Problem Solving, Decision Making, Improvement and Innovation.

Frankly I an not concerned that the KM function does not dirrectly control areas that undertake KM related/supportive activities, the main concern is around ensuring we collaboratre and are all moving in the same direction.

Example: Our mentoring program is owned and run by the L&D area in HR but the Knowledge Manager sits on the advisory board for the program.

Looking forward to catching up with people on Thursday morning.

Cory

Hi again Chris
I agree strongly re the connections.
I always seem to end up with lots of dotted line relationships between IT, OD, L&D, library, Records etc, I guess reflecting the transdisciplinary calling of KM. Another factor is the sheer range of initiatives that contribute to the 'knowledge stuff'.
I'm keen to catch up for a chat over coffee re how some of the places I work slice the pie across functions.  Give me a yell on mobile is this would be of interest. 0418724902

Hi Chris
My short hand response goes to the core purpose of KM (to maximise impact of kn on org performance). OD and L&D would claim distinctively different roles. Of course as you note there is overlap and complementarity
Kind regards

Hi,

Over the past 6 months or so I have been finding it increasingly
difficult to draw the line between Knowledge Management, Learning and
Developemtn and Organisation Development roles.

I'm not concerned that they may do similar things and work closely
together. However, in large companies where KM is often occuring in a
pocket or two rather than holistically, and the HR dept has L&D and OD,
it seems to be tricky to validate and explain the differences as well
as the necessity for all functions.

Has anyone else noticed this and how do you define the necessary
differences?

Cheers,
Chris

Greetings all,

On Thursday, the group discussed the
html to pdf converter found in the 24 March posting of Jane's E-Learning Pick of the Day. The daily posting provides links and concise commentaries on interesting e-learning tools.

The parent website is actually "The Centre for Learning & Performance" and it "provides a number of resources, consultancy services and workshops to help you understand more about how Web  2.0  technologies and tools are creating a new approach to learning (in both in education and the workplace learning) known as Learning 2.0 or Social Learning"

Enjoy,

Bernie.
